You stayed calm and politely asked him to stop and explained why. He shouldn’t have tried to pet him without permission and then still try after you asked him not to. You and Jake handled this amazingly.
met a little child who was more mature than this man. We don't have service dogs but she still approached carefully and asked us from a distance if she can pet our dogs. We said no (one of our dogs have anxiety). She smiled and said she understood since she has dogs as well and thanked us for letting her watch them from afar.
Love how this old guy is just arguing, like she's wrong or being ridiculous. And when he isn't arguing, he's ignoring her and talking over her to coax the dog to not listen to her.
i was taught as a kid “if you see a service animal, respectfully keep your distance. they’re working very hard to help their human, so you don’t want to distract them!” and i’ve lived by that my whole life. i’ll stand at a distance and smile at them, admire them. but never try to pet them or distract them in any form. mad respect to our service animals 💙

You shouldn’t pet any dog without asking let alone a service dog.

When a pet/dog owner tells you to NOT do something, you don’t discuss, you listen.

This man is the perfect example of why people need to be taught at a young age not to touch what’s not yours and not have this behavior brushed off
