They’re doing what most private equity held companies do - squeeze every last drop of profit by slashing costs and selling existing product until demand dries up. Then they move on to next company to do the same thing
Couldn't agree more. Both Panasonic, and OM Systems need to have a Still focused compact mirrorless camera body on the shelf today. Used prices for the Pen F and GX-9 are commanding top dollar in good condition. That right there should tell you there is a market for a camera like that.
Soooo.... I was waiting for a Pen-F like version of an OM-10. But I have just returned to Japan, and I couldn't help it: when in a famous Japanese department store, I bought a brand new OM-5 body only for the equivalent of ~£754 tax-free, where in the UK on A......n it is at ~£940, and on the manufacturer site at ~£1100. I have an EM-1 Mk II but started to show sign of fatigue, and wasn't convinced by the GX8 I found on the second hand market a couple months ago. So these two are getting sold. I am so happy to have found this OM-5, as it has all the bells and whistles of my EM-1 Mk II, up to EM-1 Mk III and has almost the compactness of the EM-10 Mk II I have always with me too. Seriously not understanding why OM Systems doesn't tap more into the small compact tier, maintaining the OM-5 line...
Given the parallels between bird photography and street photography where one needs gear that is light, quick, and weather sealed, OM-System is very well positioned to take on the market. Over here, even a Canon G7X Mark II in decent condition now sells above $US1000 so the demand is there. That being said, it’s the OM-5 that I grab 8 times out of 10 these days when heading out for a day of street photography. If only it had a screen like an X-Tx from Fujifilm
Yes a screen like the XT5 would be ideal to flip up for low level vertical shots. That said, the fully articulating screen is ideal to protect the LCD when on adventure. It also helps save battery life and stop you from chimping.
I can't understand why they are not riding this wave. Camera market is becoming a niche market because of phones, so every niche, including street photography, should be squeezed to the last drop like a lemon.
they can't afford to, or perhaps laid off all the talent who could work on it. i do not think we will soon see new OM bodies aside from some minor reengineering like USBC port.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Though it still doesn’t have an EVF some argue the EP7 is an updated, (2021) version of the Pen F (2015) having better continuous autofocus, at 1/2 the price. I like the tilt up/flip down screen of the EP7 over the Pen F’s side flip, and it’s builtin flash so the EP7 would be my choice especially at the lower cost. If you want an EVF get the OM-IV, which in all other respects is largely the same camera as the EP7 but even cheaper.
Good question Grant! I'm sitting here comparing the size and weight of my GX9 with my OM5. Honestly, there is very little difference! So what are the advantages of using the OM5 for street photography over the GX9? For me, in the cold and wet UK, the OM5 is weather sealed to IP53 standard for starters, and it will operate down to -10 degrees celsius. It has a better view finder, and I can easily set zone focusing for shooting on the fly. It has far better IBIS, together with a better viewfinder. It also has a handheld 50mp HD setting, and digital ND, and a better grip, not forgetting far superior focusing! So what are it's downsides? Although it has an articulating screen, IMHO it's not as good as the flip-up screen on the GX9 for discrete street photography. It's menu structure is appalling, and like the GX9, there's insufficient customisable buttons. If OM Systems updated this camera to correct these issues and added a stacked or 25 meg sensor, and marketed it for street as well as travel, I reckon they would be onto a winner.
@robertavery8002 I agree OM-5 is great. A new 25 MP sensor should come with all OM System cameras (unnecessary, but necessary for advertising purposes). Some vlogging features also need to be included.
Big difference is EVF. On GX9 you can rotate the EVF so you can look down from top, allowing low angle shots in daylight. This is also fabulous for macro photography and working with small stages.
My go to camera for almost all things "street" is the OM-5. I don't really understand all the hate in the MFT community over the OM-5. And I really don't understand the angst over a 20M sensor. Heck, Nikon just released the Z50 mkii and it has a 20M sensor and less features than the OM-5.
Not sure how well a Pen F II will sell as some may be put off the smaller sensor size. When researching the Pen F, I couldn't find much in the way of numbers, but from what I have read the Pen F digital may not have been a big seller which could be a reason why Olympus and now OM Systems have not produced a Mark II model. If anything though it has achieved a cult following which is nice. Considering the tech in the Pen F it would be a banger of a camera today. I would love to see companies like OM Systems produce a true competitor to the latest X100 series cameras.
In my mind a PEN-F mkII would be such a quick win for OM-System. I think it would only require a fairly modest investment on their part (nice for a smaller manufacturer such as OM-SYstem) . Basically take the guts of the OM-5 (aka Oly E-M1 III) put that in a (preferably) weather sealed PEN style body, adress some of shortcomings of the OM-5 (USB-C, bring menu's up to OM-1 standards) include photocentric film simulations, and they'd have a winner on their hand. Nothing new in terms of the tech at the heart of the camera, while still being a significant step up over the old PEN-F and tapping into a demand that is obviously there. A major overhaul of the software layer is a bit of a project for sure, but in my mind nothing they haven't done before, or don't know how to do. Either way, in my mind they (still) have options to make a return in style to other genre's of photography without having to reinvent the wheel or make huge investments in new sensors/processors
I don’t even think they need to update the camera. Just produce the last camera they made in sufficient quantities, you get a warranty and it’s new. I’m sure it’s “good enough” for most people. Right now there are literally no new small body cameras readily available - everything is on back order.
I don't understand their nature obsession. Just make cameras, we will do what we want with them ! And yes, the advantage of MFT is the size, so perfect for travel and street. I own a gx9 released in 2018. Pen F is even older. I would take a OM-5 now I guess. Still small and great
Same as Panasonic: the brand marketers and cost-focused finance folks rule the executive roost, and their main order of business is to not lose money and stay "on brand and in one lane" avoiding direct competition as much as possible. It's continued years-long backlash against the "a product-for-every-niche"/compete with everyone undisciplined approach of the digital camera boom years that led to far too many SKUs and massive profit losses that got us here. A little growth orientation and calculated risk taking to put things back in the balance would be great for Olympus/OMDS.
Hi Grant...Liverpool Kev here...great video...as I've said before...I just have the GX9 GM1 and seven M/43 lenses...You hit the nail on the head when you advised to keep clear of vlogging emphasis on new small(ish) cameras....Recently bought the Sony A6600 ...( I think you expressed an interest too...smaller than GX9 with a grip!)....enjoying the change with APS-C Four lenses but with the exception of the 20mm pancake the lenses are pretty big...Take care as ever.....Liverpool Kev
om-5 is fine for street photography. Olympus doesnt need a new model but they need to upgrade om-5 with a better sensor (probably 25mpx bsi sensor) and need a new weather sealed 17mm f1.8 lens. The above would be ideal. I believe sooner or later we will get a new om-5 with the above sensor but Im afraid we want see an upgraded 17mm f1.8 weather sealed lens.
The OM-5 needs a 10 bit update. It needs a new set of f1.8 primes that are weather sealed and modern. Hope they release a 7mm f2 for stabilised videos. iBIS + EIS !!
Interesting and valid points. I'd say Panasonic (micro four thirds) have gone the same way, nothing since the G-X9 - I love that camera with the 15 mm 1.7.
I totally agree. They still have the opportunity to shine but they need to get a retro pen f model out in the market. The features of the pen f are amazing. A bit of updates and tweaks and you got a winner. M43 is perfect for street. Olympus has tons of retro cameras from their film days. They need to have a retro camera with computational features luts ibis and retro controls like Fuji xt series.
You should borrow an OM System OM-5 And then make a video about it. I think it's tiny. Here are the data Fuji 100VI 128 x 75 x 55 mm 520gr and OM System OM-5 125 x 85 x 50 mm weight only 420gr Problem is the design that doesn't go in the direction of the Rangfinder/ Leica camera.

So the OM5 is no different than any other small DSLR-body camera from any other company… it doesn’t stand out sufficiently as a street camera so it has not attracted new users of that genre. Definitely a lost opportunity.
They should retire the EM10 line and just replace it with a PenF II. And i say that as someone with an EM10ii, anyone who wants an EM10 would be well served by either a new PenF or OM5.
OM Systems should release a new model of the OM-5, the OM-5 Mark II. I think that would be more constructive and realistic. Another one would be a digital version of the TRIP35. It would be a camera with a prime lens like the Ricoh GR IIIx or the Fujifilm X100 VI.
I just got rid of mine but would be open to the idea of a Pen F mark II ...maybe even strip it of any video and just make a true photo based camera with a flip up screen. If you need video then just get a DJI Action 5 and attach it into the hotshoe of the camera. Simples!!
For street photography you don't need the latest technical feats. After a lot of comparing and trying out, for me, and that is of course personal, the ideal combination is the Olympus Pen F in combination with the Pana-Leica 15mm, my favorite equipment. If the "old" MFT Pen F were now for sale unchanged, I would buy it. Mine will not function anymore one day and I would like to own a new copy.
The OM5 is built for street photography and they just waste the opportunity with wildlife, wildlife, wildlife, wildlife, wildlife, wildlife! I’m sick of it! My beloved company, is unrecognizable.
Wildlife photographers buy expensive lenses. Like me! I use my cheap GF1 for street photography. You can pick these up pretty cheap. The video is dead wrong.
OM Systems seem to be operating on the worst imaginable business model possible if it wants to continue to survive as a maker of excellent photographic tools for creatives. One can only hope that common sense prevails and they have been listening to this kind of user traffic with a new model (that people actually want, not what OM Systems think they want) waiting to launch in the wings. Hope is a wonderful beast🤞
I'm waiting to see if OM Systems is going to do anything in that space. I'm starting to lose hope with them. Specifically what we're asking for is a compact, rangefinder with dials and a viewfinder. Ideally it'll be weather sealed. This is what the PEN-F was, less the weather sealing. It's utterly surprising that neither OM nor Panasonic is filling this spot. Even if it didn't attract any new MFT customers (which I think it would), the existing MFT community would buy enough to make it worthwhile. Where's the risk?
G man love the idea. Give it that xpro3 flip down LCD,make all dials function change to anything. I'm on ya cloud bud. But the pen f was a showcase camera never to be remade. If but for a bit of OM Santa's magic ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Street photography might bring TH-cam views, but does it sell cameras? The Pen F did not sell well. Fujifilm are manufacturing exclusivity to some extent with the XV100 by restricting production numbers to build brand value.
Olympus is missing a small pancakish weather resistant prime for street and travel. There’s none. Nada. That is the biggest missed opportunity. Olympus already has a small body, OM-5, for streets, but no small WR pro-lever prime to match it.
What about the E-P7? From what I read t has some similarities, especially in the area of adjusting jpegs. No EVF, but also a lot cheaper, and still available new
The OM5 could be a great street camera as well. They aren’t marketing for it, and everyone wants weather sealing. It’s like a camera isn’t worth buying if it’s not weather sealed…. Update their small primes with weather sealing, something Olympus/OM System does very well, and of course a pen f mkii with a normal lcd screen (not a vlogging screen) and they could really have something. So many complaints about the x100 being fixed lens.
The EP7 should fit the bill. But OMDS do not seem to want to sell it - no publicity, no marketing. Second, the menu has been cut to the bone. For example I use my EP7 with the m.Zuiko 17mm f2.8, but I cannot disable the manual focus clutch or easily enable focus peaking. Although it has two dials there is only one customisable button unless I disable record. Instead I often use my EM5-III and 17mm (but it has no tilting screen) or my Sony A6500 with 16mm or 25mm (which does have a tilting screen).
DUDE YES. I'm dying for people to start caring about the vlogging market. its like the zv 1, zv e10, osmo pocket 3, etc etc but they are overpriced and just not the best image quality. I just want a 4k 10bit compact mirrorless m4/3 camera😭
not 10bit but G85? otherwise GH5 but definitely not compact I don't know if it's even possible for an MFT camera to have such video capability in something as compact as the PEN-F unfortunately... the GH series except for a couple Z-CAM cameras are pretty much the smallest it gets, the reason those other cameras you mentioned can get so small is because they have a significantly smaller sensor which also means faster readouts and by nature it's easier to achieve usable 4K 10bit capabilities on such a device, but MFT sensors are mutliple times bigger than the cameras you mentioned, and that unfortunately means the most compact MFT video cameras we have now probably can't get much smaller without compromising on those features
@@nindoninshu yeah the gh5 is just the best 500$ mft camera, im fine with the g85 tho, good ibis, 4k, great image quality, and with a good lens, great for vlogging and videography. m4/3 RULES!
@@KavinScottStudios yes sirr 🤙 if someone uses that one global shutter M43 sensor, all hell would break loose, M43 would become absolutely revolutionary for video and then the cameras could get smaller... but for some reason even though it supposedly has existed for years, no company is using the sensor...but actually I just found a reddit post and it seems z-cam is working on that one camera that was gonna use that sensor, so maybe there's hope 🙏 let's see a breakthrough in the M43 community!!
Who knows... they can make a smaller Pen that would destroy the Ricoh GR and X100V. Em10 IV and E-P7 are good but not good enough imo - too outdated, too big and limited features in comparison. Or a new xz-2 with 1 inch like someone said would destroy the Canon g7x ii/iii (g7x's are selling USED for a ridiculous $800+). Or something like an LX100. Come on OM!
The Pen F with it's sideways to flip out display and the on-off switch on the left side is far from being good for street photography. There the E-P 7 is better, though it lacks an EVF.
I am nearly sure I know the reason what is going on with OM Systems. Most probable they already layoff majority of their Research and Technology division personnel to improve company profit and now they are simply not able to make anything new. It sound very sad, but as each company who took such path, their destiny predefined.
i agree. the easiest way to show this is the counter factual. what if they had the engineers to do it? would those people be sitting around idle? no, and so they probably no longer are there.
OMDS is losing the Maitani legacy (even when the M on their name is actually from Maitani San name). Maitani san name the camera line PEN, because we can bring it everyday to records parts of our life. By abandoning the PEN line, theyre ruining Maitani san legacy.
You are identifying a group in which there may be an ROI In the purchase. You can’t keep retreading older models and slap a new name on the camera. You are looking for a photo camera that is street photography centered on a correct call. The private investment firm that purchased Olympus Optics is sitting on their hands. Too bad they are much too small for a company such as Blackstone to purchase However, that being said I still circle back to my Olympus OM D 5, EM 1 mark OM D 10. Small compact killer lenses and still working great !!
I don't think OM System had any desire to make Olympus better. Everything they have rolled out is what Olympus already had in the works before the sell/acquire, or just rebadge a body or lens with the OM brand. No real tech forward or much of anything. The other brands have brought out something, with some decent improvements, but OM is stuck. A Pen-F with a 20mp sensor from the latest old tech cameras, with weather sealing, and a weather sealed 17mm f/1.8 lens, maybe AF/tracking from the latest OM-5 series, and you're in business and getting some sales. Not a huge leap to take, but they aren't in it to do. They are basically dead. Sure, I could be wrong, but they have to prove me and others wrong. They can't survive in the bird shooting world.
OM system have some of the best street photography lenses and OM 5 and prior. Just look at other blogs, even from Panasonic users. Your just a pen F moaner, yea nice camera, but the 5 is a brill travel versatile camera. Panasonic cover vlogging, while OM cover the rest.

I just want a 4k 10bit compact mirrorless m4/3 camera😭
not 10bit but G85? otherwise GH5 but definitely not compact
I don't know if it's even possible for an MFT camera to have such video capability in something as compact as the PEN-F unfortunately... the GH series except for a couple Z-CAM cameras are pretty much the smallest it gets, the reason those other cameras you mentioned can get so small is because they have a significantly smaller sensor which also means faster readouts and by nature it's easier to achieve usable 4K 10bit capabilities on such a device, but MFT sensors are mutliple times bigger than the cameras you mentioned, and that unfortunately means the most compact MFT video cameras we have now probably can't get much smaller without compromising on those features
@@nindoninshu yeah the gh5 is just the best 500$ mft camera, im fine with the g85 tho, good ibis, 4k, great image quality, and with a good lens, great for vlogging and videography. m4/3 RULES!
@@KavinScottStudios yes sirr 🤙
if someone uses that one global shutter M43 sensor, all hell would break loose, M43 would become absolutely revolutionary for video and then the cameras could get smaller... but for some reason even though it supposedly has existed for years, no company is using the sensor...but actually I just found a reddit post and it seems z-cam is working on that one camera that was gonna use that sensor, so maybe there's hope 🙏 let's see a breakthrough in the M43 community!!
It sound very sad, but as each company who took such path, their destiny predefined.
i agree. the easiest way to show this is the counter factual. what if they had the engineers to do it? would those people be sitting around idle? no, and so they probably no longer are there.
i want a small weatherized 25mm f1.8, not a big pro grade f1.2, if i want big i will go APSC or FF
OMDS is losing the Maitani legacy (even when the M on their name is actually from Maitani San name). Maitani san name the camera line PEN, because we can bring it everyday to records parts of our life. By abandoning the PEN line, theyre ruining Maitani san legacy.
GX9II please
You are identifying a group in which there may be an ROI In the purchase. You can’t keep retreading older models and slap a new name on the camera.
You are looking for a photo camera that is street photography centered on a correct call.
The private investment firm that purchased Olympus Optics is sitting on their hands.
Too bad they are much too small for a company such as Blackstone to purchase
However, that being said I still circle back to my Olympus OM D 5, EM 1 mark OM D 10.
They can't survive in the bird shooting world.
great feedback :)
OM system have some of the best street photography lenses and OM 5 and prior. Just look at other blogs, even from Panasonic users. Your just a pen F moaner, yea nice camera, but the 5 is a brill travel versatile camera. Panasonic cover vlogging, while OM cover the rest.
A full Frame camera and use L mount lenses is where I see an opportunity.
