I was long overdue a trip on the Caledonian Sleeper. By far one of my favourite train trips to do. This day I killed 2 bird with one stone and after planespotting all morning in Edinburgh I headed north up the glorious highland mainline to Inverness in order to catch this back south to London. The new sleeper mk5 coaches aren't yet in service on the Highland Sleeper services, only the lowland services to Glasgow & Edinburgh. However I was quite hoping for a go on the older mk3 stock before they disappear because they're all part of the experience. However I am looking forward to trying out the new mk5 coaches soon and I shall do a comparison video onboard. So this service was the 20:44 from Inverness to Euston on July 23rd 2019. Due to engineering works closing the West Coast Mainline at Weaver Jnc between Crewe & Warrington all services were diverted via Manchester. So the diversion was a planned divert.
This was also filmed on one of the hottest nights of the year. Day temperature in London reached 37 and even topped 30 degrees in the Scottish highlands. So air con was a welcomed relief onboard this train (thankfully it was working).
The heat however results in some adverse weather, often during the night... I.e Thunder, Lightening and heavy rainfall. I slept through the majority of it but a lightening strike on the overhead wires between Penrith & Oxenholme resulted in our delay of almost 2 hours. Arriving into Euston at 9:30, instead of the planned 7:47.
Anyway this video includes a good look around the train and the sleeper berths on the classic mk3 sleeper coaches as well as an insight of the journey all the way down the country including the interesting diversion through Manchester and passing Piccadilly station as well.
Thanks for watching this new video from the Caledonian Sleeper. Hope you enjoyed it.

That was excellent !!! It's going to be a bummer when the MK'5 come out on this train and you can't open the windows on them:(:(:(

I did the same trip in the early 1980s, pulled by a class 47. I was amazed to count some 15 coaches in that train, seems much more than any platform could take!

the usual load was 16 coaches and class 47, i did a couple runs up to inverness, both times the 47 crawled up slochd, 47 was on full power, 8 coaches and class 67 now.

I had the privilege to ride the Caledonian Sleeper train and had the most amezing experience. Wonderful sleep room implacable clean and the best coffee in the morning. Staff was very attentive and professional. My favorite .

Very rare for anything to run through Manchester Piccadilly without stopping - also both trains this one and the Transport for Wales were running in same direction on the pair of tracks, one is the up and one is the down usually, though I believe both do have bi directional signalling, if not often used in this way.

Great footage! For some reason I thought the Mk2/3s were no longer in service! Also surprised to see they are still hiring in FL 90s for power. I was expecting it would all be Mk5s and 92s by now!....nice to see the old BR stock is still going strong.

    • @TrainPlaneHub

I didn't know that this train doesn't stop on Manchester Piccadilly!!
¿Isn't it a bit strange that the train were pulled by a freight locomotive?
    Wonderful video.

It was diverted via Manchester due to engineering work at Acton Grange Junction, south of Warrington and would not normally see Manchester at all!

the freight locomotive is hired from freightliner, it is classed as a dual locomotive for passenger and freight, there is not much else about to pull this train, any of the current diesel locomotive in the UK will likely blow up pulling this train at their maximum speed and there is very few electric locomotives available to replace the class 90s.

    • @10trenes
      @10trenes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, that's the problem when at least the 90% (or more) of the british trains are self-propelled... No need to have many electric locomotives.
For me, the trains pulled by a locomotive always are the most beautiful to see.
That's why I love the Caledonian videos!

Being a resident of the US,I'm not familiar with British passenger rail--is the the consist normally that long, approximately 15 cars or is that because of summer travel? Until the very end at Euston,it seemed you were the only one on board! I love how you're able to board using a door of your choice without an attendant's help. Interesting that your breakfast wasn't included in the fare, choices didn't look terribly appetizing, not sure what it would cost in USD.How late were you in arrival?

    • @OlanKenny

Usually about 15/16 and frequently fully or almost fully booked. It will have been around 6/8 from Inverness, then a few from Aberdeen and a few from Fort William in the far corner of Scotland. All joined up to form one long train from Edinburgh. Then in the opposite direction they split 3 ways.
There's also one that's just to Glasgow and Edinburgh, dividing up in south Scotland

  • @nigelkthomas9501

So how did this trip go? Unless I’ve gone deaf there was no narration! Looks like you might’ve been rather late judging by the fact it was daylight before you even got to Manchester!
I did the Fort William sleeper four years ago and it was absolutely hellish! Three hours late and hardly any sleep! You couldn’t pay me to do that again!
