    So beautiful!
    I hope a new build project for one comes! The preserved collection of Berkshires feels incomplete without one of the most beautiful engines ever built.

    My grandpa worked for the L&N in the 1960's and 1970's and became a yardmaster in Chattanooga, TN. While the L&N had dieselized long before then, they were running W&A #3 "The General" in excursion service. They would keep the locomotive in the yard where my grandpa would work and everyday he could look out over the rows of cars in the parking lot and see the big balloon smokestack of the general. He says that when he was a kid in the 1930's and 1940's he would see the massive Pacifics and Mikados from the Southern Railroad and the Big Emma's from the L&N. Ah, the good old days. I wish I could have been there.

    My grandfather was an engineer for the L&N from the 40s to the 70s. He engineered from Etowah, TN to Corbin, KY and back. I have a picture of him in the bottom right corner of all my videos. I can remember him grabbing his "grip" to go off on another run at all hours of the day and night. It was a tough job, but secure, with a good retirement plan.

    The Big Emma on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad were many called their 2-8-4s in both freight and passenger trains.

    My father worked for L & N in WWII. Entry level employee was given a coal scoop and got "with it!" I have his 992 Hamilton railroad watch he bought from a retiring NC St. L employee at Capshaw, Alabama.

    Andrew: Nice video. It’s very nostalgic. I hope you have the best of luck rebuilding one of these berks!

    Thanks for posting. My great uncle was an engineer for the Chicago and Northwestern in Southern Illinois, hauling coal from the mines to Chicago. They used the Berkshire type steam locomotives.

      No problem. :) I'm just glad I found this clip last year in July. And besides, I didn't know that. ;)

    What if Louisville and Nashville Big Emma No. 1954 was saved?

      @Oldiesfan017  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking of having Big Emma's #1966 and #1984 with both tenders and engines preserved. Otherwise, fair enough for you.

    C&O called their Berkshires "Kanawhas" because Berkshire was a Yankee name, lol.

    Sadly all m1 l&n locomotives were scrapped. Although interestingly most of the auqilery tenders during the steam excursions in the late 20th century were tenders from m1 locomotives

    1984's tender is parked on a siding on the lebenon branch between new hope and new haven

    It's a true shame that none of the L&N rr m1 class 2-8-4 locomotives were preserved for display viewing, these M1 engines were possibly the most popular & the last great representatives of L&N steam power.

    Cool video! I wish they'd restore an old berk from somewhere and paint it up as L&N. Sure the L&N originals are all gone, but take one from another line that's only on static display somewhere. Why should Nickel Plate Road 765 and Pere Marquette 1225 have all the glory? LOL

      +Rebel9668 Or, I can rebuild one of the L&N Berks and match up with its tender if I take control of Kloke Locomotive Works in the near future. That would be an interesting sight to see. Have you ever heard of the T1 Trust? It has plans to rebuild a Pennsylvania Railroad T1 4-4-4-4 steam engine. Check it out! :D prrt1steamlocomotivetrust.org

      Rebel9668 The Kentucky Steam Heritage Group has just cosmetically restored C&O 2716 to look like an L&N Big Emma last month. It's only temporary so get the photos while you still can. The locomotive was just renumbered to 1992 but it's still on display at the Kentucky Railway Museum.

    Corbin is in southern Kentucky near the Tennessee line, not northern Kentucky.

      +lee penlack I know. But, I'm hoping I can build a new L&N Berk (or maybe 2) to match with its tender at the Southeastern Railway Museum down in Duluth, Georgia.

      +Andrew Steiner there is also a tender at kentucky rail museum!

    • @Oldiesfan017
      @Oldiesfan017  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that too! :) There a few separate steam tenders scattered throughout the US that need to have their matching locos to be rebuilt and hooked up with. That's a sight I'd like to see.

      @@Oldiesfan017 yeah. And they need to be replicas of them built instead of building only one new PRR T1 5550 from scratch. And britan has many steam locomotives projects going on. Why not America have more extinct steam locomotive project rebuilds? Because America needs to have the most built extinct steam locomotives.

    Why is it called big Emma ?

    • @Oldiesfan017
      @Oldiesfan017  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it's a nickname that train crews called the L&N Berkshires, since they were classified with the letter M. As a matter of fact, most railroad steam engines were classified by alphabetical letters more often than numbers.
