  • In hindsight, I made this recording under bitter-sweet circumstances. It turned out that shortly after I recorded Jonathan Hope at Gloucester Cathedral in 2021, the organ would catastrophically break meaning it would never be heard again in its then form.
    Nicholson & Co are going to undertake a renovation and restoration of the organ, and I look forward to hearing a pipe organ in this wonderful acoustic once again.
    Louis Vierne - Organ Symphony No.2, Op.20
    00:00 | Allegro
    08:08 | Choral
    16:39 | Scherzo
    21:35 | Cantabile
    31:12 | Final
    Performed by Jonathan Hope Assistant Director of Music at ‪@gloucestercathedral3992‬.

    The bittersweet circumstances of what happened after the recording make this seem like an obvious divine appointment. Thanks to all concerned who made this work of beauty available to the world. Glad to hear that restoration is planned but meanwhile this is outstanding.

    This symphony has always been my favourite, the trill in the Allegro must be the greatest trill in music. The performance was very sensitive especially in the Cantabile. Thank you for recording this.

    What a fabulous performance. I have loved the warm but edgy sound of this instrument ever since I heard Mendelssohn's 3rd Sonata played on it by Andrew Millington, which I seem to recall I recorded from Radio 3 many years ago. It sounds every bit as exciting as it did then! Definitely one of the most unique cathedral organ sounds in the country.

    What a fabulous performance by Jonathan Hope of the Organ Symphony No. 2 by Louis Vierne. A magnificent sound in a wonderfully reverberant building with a warm acoustic matching the mellow stonework. I understand this instrument was subject to a great deal of controversy in its day, being either loved or hated! When you hear Vierne's music being played on it like this . . . I can only say that I think it sounds vibrant and exciting and full of presence - so I love it! As you remark, Richard, it will be interesting to see what happens when Nicholson & Co complete the renovation/restoration. Let's hope Gloucester Cathedral will once again be blessed with an organ worthy of the title: The King of Instruments!

      This is honestly a career highlight for me - recording that organ! I childhood dream of mine was to just play the organ, let alone recording it! ❤️

      @@beautyinsound Lord Richard, Thanx for recording Jonathan Hope interpreting Vierne No. 2
      Off Topic: Just heard the Durufle Requiem at St. Eustache with Trinity College Choir under Stephen Layton's guidance.
      That is the ultimate interpretation for the 21st Century - I firmly believe that it will never be beaten in this century. Just absolutely gob-stoppingly stunning!

    This is something very special indeed. What a performance! As much as I love the first and final movements, I have to say that the latter part of the second movement (where it really takes off) is my favourite part. That and the Cantabile (which is hauntingly beautiful).
    I should also comment on the great sound quality, Richard. You're really becoming a master of your multimedia art!

      @Richard McVeigh - forgive me for being uninformed, but I’m not familiar with the Nicholson firm. Any time I hear of restorative work on any UK Cathedral organ it always seems to be Harrison and Harrison. They’ve even done cathedral organs in Australia. Any clues why Gloucester went a different route? What can you share about Nicholson since I’m out of the loop across the pond.

    For those interested, the organ builders Nicholsons have removed all the pipework from this instrument and the pipes have been melted down. The exception are the case pipes which date from the 17th century. So the Gloucester Cathedral organ shown here no longer exists. As such this demonstration is a useful historical record of the instrument before its destruction. The brand new organ is due to be completed in 2026.

    Sweet music from this sweet instrument! A better fate awaits this magnificent organ than that of Cavaille-Col/Mutin op 899 down in Lujan, Argentina, wasting away as a source of souvenirs, I'm told.

    A terrific recording! The acoustics does half of the job (well, the organ and organist do sound great too of course). Very curious what caused 'breaking' the organ? That's a sad business.

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was something to do with the electrics which were un-reversible, apparently. The entire organ has since been taken out, and the console which you see in this video no longer exists. Fingers crossed for a fine replacement! Infact, the organ of Llandaff Cathedral is by the same company doing the Gloucester work, and I expect it’ll be quite similar.

    • @owensmith7530
      @owensmith7530 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beautyinsound Hmm, I'm unconvinced that anything broken to do with electrics is unreversible. Parts can be rebuilt, wiring re-made etc. Unless the entire thing caught fire and there is no documentation for it.
