My mom is so lucky that she's stingy with money. She was always poor and now in her 60s even when she did fall for a scam, the moment they ask for money or her credit card details she just hangs up. I hate those scammers.
Recently there was a case where an elderly woman had been in a coma or something for several years in a care home and suddenly gave birth, naturally the police are demanding all the male staff take a DNA test, it's horrendous the things the elderly have to put up with at a time in their lives when they deserve being looked after, scammers are the worst, most disgusting people but this case made me sick to the pit of my stomach... 😔
It happened to me five years ago when I was 65 and I vowed never to let it happen again. It didn't cost me much but I know I should have have told the plumber to just F.Off. He overcharcharged me a rediculous amount for just unblocking a sick. It took him five seconds and he took $195.00 for the job.

7:08 wait, how is this a crime? Is it criminal fraud? Or is there a special law for elders that protects them in these situations? Edit: This is a really good PSA. I am favoriting this.
It's a crime upon false pretences and applied pressure, I don't think these cases are particularly clear. It's frequently awkward to talk about money to begin with, so things can get out of focus/control fast. My grandfather was pretty competent for a long time with his dementia but eventually went walking down to the store and buy whatever he couldn't find... leaving me with a dozen vegetable peelers, sane people wouldn't have gotten and a fond memory. Other people make different experiences.
As ones ability to think critically declines, the emotional side of ones brain takes over. When the people you are emotionally bonded too are unethical you lose the ability to protect your interests. I wonder if there might be some way to train people so that their emotions don’t override their critical thinking.
Before people get old, setup a banking process that limits spending to everyday transactions to that one account. Other accounts which store the bulk of your assets should be inaccessible unless you specifically need it, verified by a bank manager (remember those?).

I thought this video was going to be about the ridiculous proliferation of online get rich quick schemes since the pandemic. Almost every single ad I see on a TH-cam video is for one or another. It's crazy.
Let's be honest. People who fall for financial scams, are doing so due to their greed. Also,if i m dying and I have 600.000 dollars to spare, the last thing i would care abt is getting money back from someone who clearly needed it, and was willing to risk . What good is it if she goes to prison (because there's no way to recover the funds). A loss for everyone ,instead of at least having 1 better off(and alive).
Love, respect and care for our senior citizens. They are a valuable resource.
Unfortunately, scammers tend to agree!
about them being a valuable resource.
Very helpful, thank you 🙏🏻❤️🩹✨
Working/middle class people working all their lives to get vulnerable and robbed of family wealth deserves life imprisonment
Great subject matter that finally got the light of day.
Great Talk Ted.
Thank you for bringing awareness to this. Some seriously disgusting and predatory people out there

I'm kidding, of course. I have an affinity for homographs! I only wish I will be as sharp as your mother in the coming years!
You raised a very valid topic.. Respect from India

an elderly woman giving birth...?
I don't think so
May God bless you Jane. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

The same thing happened to me only it was a car repair that took me $250 for doing nothing. Damn, I just wrote it off and am wiser because of it.

Great words full of gold nuggets...
This happened to my mom , it was terrible . TY for the message .
The police said my mom was too frail to stand up in court .
And what of these scammers? What have we learned to reduce and someday eliminate this ill from our society?
listen again
Thank you so much for this video !!!!
Thank you so much for this comment!
This is really shocking. A mountainous problem.
The real scammers are never discussed or punished.
Super,
Thats because its the US military running these telemarketing scams just to harrass.

Well Done
People do desperate things in desperate times. Make a world that's easier to survive in and less evil will be resorted to
Absolutely, in the meantime we can also look out for elderly people while supporting people getting there.

Seriously the extent of people being awful to each other exceeds my comprehension, this far beyond actual scarcety
