- Inside the Largest U.S. Icebreaker
The Arctic is incredibly important to national security. As noted in the National Strategy for the Arctic Region, the United States seeks an Arctic region that is peaceful, stable, and prosperous. The U.S. Coast Guard contributes to that goal through enduring presence in the high latitudes. As an Arctic nation, our work in the northern high latitudes ensures our national sovereignty, secures American waterways, and protects American economic prosperity.
Last summer, the USCGC HEALY transited the Arctic north of Russia, and later engaged with key Arctic partners such as Norway, Canada, Denmark, and Iceland. USCGC HEALY is one of two active polar icebreakers and is the Coast Guard’s only icebreaker designed specifically to support research in the Arctic. Watch here to learn more about their missions.

Starting my journey as a Boatswains Mate in the Coast Guard this year 😎 so excited.
Go to sea kiddo, and never look back. Fair winds, following seas.
@@paineoftheworld very excited to play my part in saving lives, defending our borders, and serving my country.
When do you ship out
@@kevingottoohardmiles I go to MEPS on the 29th. Recruiter says I should be shipped after summer or sooner.
Go to a station and get your coaxsin letter to make 2nd then go to a cutter
It's amazing how old and how few ice breakers the USA has and especially compared with other nations.
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Plankowner here. Glad to see her hard at work. Thanks.
Respect to CAPT Michael Healy and his brothers and sisters.
When i was in Coast Guard Bootcamp...I resided in Healy Hall...I learned alot about that man...
Extremely well done! Thank you so much for creating this much needed glimpse inside of our tiny fleet of Polar Icebreakers.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That is Sooo Cool
I pulled security for that boat years ago. Vigor Seattle. True story.
Love you Ladies & Gentlemen!!! Thank you for your dedication and service!!!
This needs more views!!
Very cool 😎
Leading intro question, "What are they dulling up there?"
They are up there because the Department of Treasury and Department of Navy signed in 1965 a Memorandum of Understanding for HIGH latitude icebreaking. In the agreement, the Navy would give the Coard Guard the Russian returned WWII lend-lease ice breakers in exchange for the Coast Guard would take on the mission of HIGH latitude ice breaking.
It could be argued the Dept of Transportation and Homeland Security should return the heavy ice breakers to Navy and return them the mission as well.
You got that right, return these duties to the NAVY !
The U.S. Navy would just get stuck, and then who would help them out?
@@U.S.CoastGuard Congress, like through Title 10 funding like any other authorized and appropriated program.
Great video!
Great views!
My father served on the USCGC Eastwind in 66,67
Semper Paratus!
What CG Ice Breaker came to Thule AB in 1979? I was stationed there and was given a tour.
Most likely one of the Wind-Class Ice Breakers.
Does the Healy have a law enforcement contingent on board ever?
Currently serving on the Polar Star ❤️. She's an old girl but she's tough. Going Aviation soon...
*You should make a video on the Star*
Start shooting videos and request a PA! They can help create a video with the work of the crew.
Go USCG Aviation. 😊
when will the CGX have those gloves lol
We're not "cool" enough to get special gloves.
Why do they need a store?
Polar Star is better
Nope . Puddle pirates dont count.....
Avast ye scallawag! The denial of truth does not make it less so.
@@U.S.CoastGuardGive that ship to the navy. We'll take better care of her 😊......
lol so if u want a easy job in the army join the coast guard to be apart of the ice breaker ?
This thing sucks compared to real russian icebreakers
We prefer not to deal with the radiation of Russian Icebreakers.
@@U.S.CoastGuard but aircraft carriers and submarines are ok(even though it's navy)?
