It is the worst year in decades. Very few people were alive for WWII or the great depression. So for most of us, we have nothing to compare it to. Over a million deaths worldwide and that is 100% on the low end as many nations are underreporting. Add on to that the economic impact and this will go down as the worst year for billions of people.
It's all relative- For many people, particularly in the West, the emergence of Covid-19 and the ensuing economic uncertainty, societal fractures, political weirdness etc. all within the first few months of the year (not to mention the threat of nuclear war with Iran/USA/North Korea in January alone!) has been utterly incomprehensible. Add in the fear of Covid and the way we get our global news so instantly now, in some ways, it really is the worst for our psyches. We're being bombarded with distressing info everywhere we turn and to say "The worst year ever!" is hyperbole for sure, to us en masse around the world, it really can FEEL like this is about as bad as it could get.
As a biologist, I think that this "worst lead to something better" principle also applies to some aspects of evolution. For example, we contain ancient "viruses" in our DNA (called transposons) which have inserted themselves millions of years ago. Although these transposons have and still can mess up our DNA by breaking chromosomes and destroying genes they also gave us additional DNA sequences which were used to drive evolution (I just made a video about that). Without these ancient "viruses" for example we would have not able to make placentas meaning that dogs, cats or us could not exist today. Interesting principle I think!
Thank you for making this. We all need to know we will get through this pandemic - it's just hard to imagine an end, when we're trapped in the middle of it.

One thing we can be certain is this. We never thought we live in the golden age but we will always live in the worst age. At least, in our own thoughts. And can you do the video about Timurid Renaissance, please?
The underlying point of this video is: history shows that every time there was a downturn or a catastrophe, things eventually turned better. I know this is what people want to hear now but that is the real issue: using history for propaganda. There is no evidence that things will be so much better as soon as the pandemic is over, and a real overcoming of the pandemic may require a complete revolution in our ways of living (not necessarily a bad thing).
The role of this pandemic is to dilute humanity, thus, hypothetically, allowing the survivors to rebuild with enough resources for all. We definitely need to review our existence and reinvent to rebuild.
We're not done with the aftermath of covid, we have heaps more to deal with. These famous moments were rude awakenings, usually made possible by long running ignorance. Reverting back to problematic times is also possible when corrupt people and decisions take advantage of peacetime.

A request for content here. As a lawyer, now retired, I've long been interested in the implementation and consequences of the adoption by Great Britain and its colonies of the Gregorian calendar during the eighteenth century. I've read that ten days or so of that year were just leapfrogged over, just skipped for official purposes. How weird was that? How were contracts and land leases handled? Prison sentences? Timing of the sabbath day? Please consider this topic for your videos.
Thanks!
Bottom line of this fascinating video is that we need pandemics to help us move forward to flourish as a human society. How comforting(: I don't want to sound too selfish but I'd rather have my pre-Covid life back😊
Covid 19 "pushed" us to make the mrna vaccines. Mrna has been studied for years. It took the pandemic to put the knowledge in use
This video here earned your channel my subscription.
This 13 minutes helped me more than my hourly zoom therapy.
I agree. It helps to remember people have lived through worse and came out better.
you mentioned healthcare developing in the west for Europe but forgot to include North America -- Canada also developed health care too.
Wonder why the us didn’t go for universal healthcare as well?
And we are here today because our ancestors survived ALL of these 🙂
boy, universal medicine sure sounds like a good idea, especially after a pandemic.
Just like strict gun laws make sense, especially after a mass shooting.
Too bad I live in the US, where we do nothing about everything
Virgin Herbert Hoover vs the Chad FDR
Hello to all who is watching this in late 2022.
After this time in history, I think it will be a golden after math. One major change will be the way folks work. Many of those who are working from home now will choose to continue to do so.
Suggestion: What was it really like to be a hippie in the sixties through the seventies? Was it all just peasant shirts and flower power?
For the most part, yes.✌
You think hippies will remember what it was like
I love this channel
Interesting...
The historical facts I'm looking forward to is, Timeline 1990's. 😁
But honestly, every video you have is great!
Good God, the United States is 100 years behind Europe in health care. Maybe this horrible disaster will bring change.
