      There is an honest God out there, and he's pissed off with all phony religiosity. Imagine being an ancient Jew and hearing God's prophet Isaiah saying this:

      and who tremble at my word.
      But whoever sacrifices a bull
      is like one who kills a person,

      is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
      whoever makes a grain offering
      is like one who presents pig’s blood,
      and whoever burns memorial incense
      is like one who worships an idol.
      They have chosen their own ways,
      and they delight in their abominations;
      so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
      and will bring on them what they dread.
      For when I called, no one answered,
      when I spoke, no one listened.

    I grew up in a semi devout Irish Catholic family in a predominantly Irish and Italian neighborhood . My grandma on my moms side I was extremely close with and she went to church almost every day. They helped her find a new apartment near the church that was a million times better in neighborhood (she was taking a 45 min ride on public transport to get to church every day) , a fraction of the cost (it was specifically for older people on fixed incomes), and in center city (she never got a license in her life). Her best friend was a nun, SisterAgnes. Going to Catholic school growing up it was so cool at the time (like 10) to see this nun who cursed, was funny, and not held above but rather just a hilarious friend of my grandma.
    On the other hand, at my grade school (Pre K to 8th) there was a priest in charge, Monsignor Heron. He was a very aloof person and not friendly in the slightest. He had a Benz and a BMW. When being ordained a nun must give up any and all money, properly, etc “vow of poverty “, priests do not.
    Turns out when I was like 12 he passed away from cancer. They held an emergency meeting in the church a few weeks later and asked every parishioner to come. Turned out (surprise!😏) the Monsignor used the church and school money as his own and bought numerous luxury vehicles, luxury beachfront condo in Hawaii, condo in Vail for skiing, and it goes on. The meeting wasn’t to apologize. The meeting was basically a “we may have to close the school and who knows what will happen to the children...” type guilt trip and wanted everyone to pay back to cover all of his debts while continuing to pay the mandatory amount to send kids to school .

    It's very very important to remember that the midieval times were a time of historical illiteracy. The vast VAST majority of our literature and first hand accounts of the time were written by the rich and the wealthy who were under a tighter scrutiny by the church than the average person. Not that the average joe wasn't entirely free from the church's power but he was much less watched and observed by it and much more free to be skeptical of the church's claimed authority over the hereafter. Martin Luther's problems with the practices of the church were hardly brand new in thought, the difference is he came from within it.

    "Does guilt play a part in your everyday obedience?" Well, I was raised as a Roman Catholic if that answers your question. 😂😔
    My mother's family is heavily involved with the church (priests, nuns, church employees, etc); my mother herself is agnostic and I am an atheist though. My father's family is extremely religious. His mother was actually in a convent and was forced to leave right before taking her vows do to a death in the family. During this time she met my grandpa and thus didn't return to the convent. Despite this, as far as being raised in a "strict catholic household" wasn't entirely my reality, though my father's upbringing within the church definitely effected his parenting choices. For example, I was forced to get confirmed in the Catholic church before I was allowed to stop going to church (his siblings raised there children the same). Myself and a cousin of mine would absolutely say that even that simple piece of our childhood was a traumatic event. Myself and another cousin of mine felt like attending mass was an absolute torcher, both of us having hyperactivity issues and complex trauma disorders from other events. My father was so concerned about modesty that he told me AS A PRE-TEEN that I looked "trashy" in low rise jeans (jeans that my mother got me for a gift). He tried to kick me out at 18 for getting a cartilage stud to mark the occasion; my mother told him if I had to leave over that, she would leave too...he suddenly told me it looked nice the next day.
    This crap is from an extremely non-strict catholic home comparatively. The leval of strict adherence to the faith varries from parish to parish and household to household, despite the pope still being a very important part of Catholicism as a leader. To my knowledge, the current Pope is actually pretty awesome and foward thinking. Pope John Paul II tried to make some pretty cool changes to the church as well. For example, the reason the pope-mobile has bulletproof glass is because someone tried to assassinate him when he was trying to deem birth control as a perfectly respectable thing within the church because of the overpopulation of the world (the assassination attempt put a stop to that). Technically speaking, Roman Catholics don't believe in purgatory anymore btw. The Pope removed that decades ago(at least). It was where unbaptized babies went; now they go to hell instead. Catholicism is a very strange religion and, in my opinion, inherently harmful for kids overall. Humans are disgusting creatures as far as the faith is concerned, and that is drilled into the youths of the church (original sin) and just snowballs from their. I have many loved ones who are Catholic, most of them are incredibly wonderful people, but there is a reason the phrase "catholic guilt" exists so prevalently in the world today. Nothing against Catholics who don't shove their own faith based fears onto others, and I understand why other Catholics may do it (its not really their fault that they feel what they do - the core of Catholicism hasn't really changed much since the middle ages) but on a personal level, I really am not fond of the faith itself.
    Side note: the Catholic church still has a "get out of hell free" card of sorts. If a person has sinned, they merely confess those sins to a priest and perform the penance given to them (usually to say the Hail Mary prayer 10 times) and you're good to go.

La Divina Commedia is an international masterpiece comparable to The Odissey. It is written in a wonderful way, and it describes the society and the important people of that time. It was not used to scare people at all, cause people during the middle ages already knew about the punishments of hell and purgatory. The poem is rated as a masterpiece not just by Italians, but by all the critics around Europe and other countries. Also Dante never wrote about The mouth of hell, that's in your fantasies.
