Despite still coming under the umbrella of 'super tourers' the rules in the STW were not the same as in the BTCC, hence the modifications the teams could make to the cars in the STW meant some of them were successful there whilst poor performers in the BTCC. The 406 is one example, the Vectra is another. In the BTCC cars were forced to share the same basic suspension configuration as the road car. Not so in the STW. There was also much more freedom in terms of under-body aero.

also the teams that ran the car were a big factor as well. Regarding the 406 Peugeot put more money to the STW team, over the BTCC team.
