Excellent video. It's as I've always said: advertise something to the buying public and they'll buy it. Social media exposes you to every market on the planet. Your target market will be impossible to miss, because they will find you. In days past, you had to get out there and take every little gig - the mythical "exposure" - to build a following i.e. people who were willing to pay a cover charge and abide a 2-drink minimum policy to see you perform and watch you grow as an artist so they can look back in 20 years and say "yeah, man, I was there when those guys were just starting out! They sucked then, and they still suck, but now they're gettin' paid to suck!"
People still want that personal connection, so they'll take the "this is us, sucking" videos because it's an immersive experience, just without having to actually drive 2 hours to your rehearsal space on a Tuesday night to hear it in person and watch you fumble through a new cover or a new original. Film it, post it, tag it, invite the unwashed masses into your personal lives without actually catching whatever diseases they're carrying. It's a win-win. It's a bit Orwellian, to be sure, but we always knew this was coming because people took 1984 as a lesson plan, not Science Fiction.
Oh well, the dam has burst, and you can either die on your hill or learn how to float.
I've already got my TH-cam channel for my music, but I've been sidetracked by all that "adulting" stuff, and haven't been able to get my content together. However, I'm presently getting in a position where I can focus on it more, and will be following your advice on it. I know it takes just as much work as "doing it the hard way", but the payoff potential leans drastically more to the positive side than "the old way" did. Thin about it: you can put in the same amount of time chasing down $50 gigs in a dive, and maybe you won't die before, during, or as a result of the experience, or you can sing into your phone and a couple of GoPros, post it on the internet, and let the lambs come to the slaughter.
Go rent a building and some lights for a day, set up a fake show, invite friends and family to whoop and holler enthusiastically, and post it online. Send those videos out to decent venues and other gig opportunities, and see who bites.
Sell yourself like you mean it. There is nothing on a McDonald's menu that won't kill you, but they've served "billions and billions", and do so every year. Why? Advertising. Word of mouth. Do they care about childhood obesity? Nope. Too busy making money. You wanna make money? Advertise. What you do is the best thing since sliced bread. You do it better than your peers. You're a Star! You've got a #1 hit in the bag! You've got The Hook, The Look, and you're so far ahead of the competition you're coming up behind them again! You are the Next Big Thing. You're going to be a household name (no such thing as bad publicity). You're guaranteed a Spot On The Show. You're going to do the Super Bowl halftime show.
First one you have to sell it to is yourself. If you can buy it, you can sell it.
