    Hello Red.
    The Eris, or at least a couple of its designs, are very well done. I especially like the ERS-2N, and a very slight modification upon it. My modified variant of the 2N, removes the X Pulse Small Lasers in favor of Standard Medium Lasers. Both generate 3 heat per firing and require one ton per laser, and take up one 'slot'. Where it counts though is the X Pulse Small's range of 2/4/5 vs the Medium's 3/6/9. I prefer the added range, since heat, weight, and space are the same.
    The ERS-3R, however... Reminds me of my old Car Wars days, when I built a vehicle having only a Ram Plate, and around 70 or so Micro Missiles, all linked to a single trigger. In that duel, I pulled a 'bootlegger' turn (sliding 180-degree turn) and fired off all the missiles... the result took well over an hour to work through, since the missiles hit and 'ate' my opponent's vehicle... left side's armor, engine, cockpit, weapons, right side armor, and finally... the remaining missiles struck the arena wall of Armadillo Auto Duel Arena, penetrated, and killed a good portion of the crowds watching the match!
    I am, normally, all for putting as much advanced tech into a Mech as I can fit, that makes sense for the design. But in the Eris' case, the Small X Pulse Lasers just do not make sense to me, when Standard Medium Lasers have the better range, and the exact same weight, mass, and heat profile. Also, Medium Lasers would be Far, far easier to replace 'in the field' than something has 'high-tech' as small x pulse lasers. And thinking about it, the medium lasers would be less costly as well.
    I do wish that the Mech had enough spare slots for one additional feature. Half Tons of ammo. The Mech design is fast enough to close with its enemy that a full ton of long range missiles is 'wasted', whereas a ton and a half of SRMs and a half ton of LRMs would be better suited to the 'close and savage' one's opponent tactic. Having that full ton of LRM ammo, though, indicates that one should properly stay out to a longer range, peppering the Enemy with missiles, and then close upon the target. This thought process does not aid the Mech, and, in fact, keeps it out at longer ranges, where large and heavy weapons can reach it.
    The disparity of the Eris' long range damage potential vs most other Mechs ends up counting in its disfavor. 120 missiles requires 12 'rounds' of combat to empty the ammo bin. If I were an Eris pilot, I would routinely specify only a half filled bin of LRM ammo, allowing me only 6 rounds of fire with that weapon, and leaving an empty bin for any critical hit upon it, and NOT leaving 60 missiles to cause an ammo explosion. Yes, the Mech has CASE II for both torso locations, but why NEED it if you don't need to?
    Now that I have 'nitpicked' the Eris... Let me say this: Good video. The Mech is 'almost' perfect, as designed, barring the changes I've mentioned above. Keep making videos Red... I enjoy your commentary as you give us the data on such useful and interesting designs.

  • @Chris_Sizemore
    @Chris_Sizemore ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Eris follows the classic formula for making a great mech. The first step is to determine what the range of engagement a mech will have and design a weapons package around that. The Eris chose close combat. The next is to give the mech an engine to support their chosen engagement distance. Mechs that have better range need less speed. Mechs designed to brawl need high movement to survive to their engagement distance, and jump jets are especially effective for brawlers for both defense and offence. The third step is making the basic engine heatsinks work as hard as possible. The Eris does a wonderful job of working those 10 double heatsinks.
    The Eris chose 3 weight saving technologies that have the biggest impact for the crit spaces used. Endo steel is almost a no-brainer, since there are very few times that you'll need the crit space it takes up and it offers a significant weight savings for no real complications. Double Heatsinks are just too bloody efficient not to mount. Most especially when you aren't adding any additional heat sinks other than the 10 that come included in the engine. The XL engine is a bit of a risk since it makes the loss of a torso deadly to the mech, but this is heavily mitigated by the partial wing system allowing the Eris to become an evasive close range fighter with an extreme movement modifier.
    The one consideration for the era that the Eris was designed in that wasn't included is pulse lasers. As a mech that is expected to constantly use its jump jets, the pilot will have to deal with the +2 modifier against their own accuracy. The bonus to hit for pulse lasers would be a natural counter to that penalty. Considering the Eris' intended engagement distance, mounting large and medium pulse lasers would be an easy fit. While clan versions would be preferred, even inner sphere pulse lasers would be fine.

    • @BigRed40TECH
      @BigRed40TECH  ปีที่แล้ว

      It does have Pulse Lasers.

    • @Chris_Sizemore
      @Chris_Sizemore ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BigRed40TECH While the Eris does have the jump capability to take full advantage of the 3 small x-pulse lasers, I feel that small lasers offer too little advantage. The forced range is dangerous for an avoidance based defense. Devoting enough weight to put in a large pulse instead of the ppc would be worthwhile. Medium pulse is a lot more useable than the smalls, though considering the greater ranges in this era it might not be any different than the small lasers.

    • @BigRed40TECH
      @BigRed40TECH  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chris_Sizemore They are X-Small Pulse Lasers, so they are what? 1 Hex shy of Medium Pulse Lasers, unless you do X pulse? It's not that far off. And it doesn't have the heat to do the latter imo.

      @Chris_Sizemore ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BigRed40TECH Yeah, the Eris would need clan tech to make medium pulse lasers an upgrade. I was thinking the x-pulse was 1/2/3 range, but 2/4/5 makes it hard to come up with a better alternative. Sounds fun. The 2nd variant seems best for my play style. That is to say, max armor and speed paired with accurate high range weapons at the cost of damage output. This makes for longer battles as the enemy gradually gets picked apart while virtually no meaningful hits come my way. Though one or two 1st variety mechs paired with the 2nd or equivalent can prove devastating if used for spotting then to go in for the kill.

    I like the Eris N variant as a flawed skirmisher. It has moderate to slow speed for the Era, but its JJ's are great. It almost cannot use the MML's with SRM ammo unless you want to expose it to the firepower needed to pop a torso and end it. The TMM it generates is great, but it has to use its Jump to get there also penalizing itself in the process. The Heat it generates while jumping is also an impediment to it being more than an annoyance in combat unless it goes full on SRM spam ignoring the SNPPC or uses LRM ammo for harassing enemies at range until it jumps in for a PPC snipe.
    Solid mech but lacking the flash of other new medium and even Heavy Jumpers of the Era.

    The rocket version is about as close to a modern Kamikaze as you can find. Although unlike the historical Kamikaze this one allows for the pilot to return to reload and try it again (should they survive the enemy's retaliation). This is an absolutely fearful instant death machine if it gets behind any mech, no matter the mass or armor of the targeted machine. It is simply an instant delete of even the heaviest assault or super heavy, by a lone medium. Talk about a way to destroy enemy morale.

    The ERS-3R is a brilliant design imo. It seems designed with simple math and economics in mind. A relatively cheap for its era 50 ton mech designed to target and destroy far heavier, far more expensive mechs and then run away.
    Even if it gets destroyed in the process it trades favorably, but with that level of mobility combined with an angel ECM it actually has a pretty good chance of successfully evading pursuit and getting back into friendly cover.
    It lacks all sustainability so it's completely incapable of winning a fight on its own, but the constant threat of having one of these madmechs dart into your lines in any given skirmish or battle and deleting your heaviest mech on the field is pretty devastating.
    Especially since that heaviest mech on the field is quite likely to be the center piece of your strategy, not to mention quite possibly your command mech.
    This is an assassin mech, plain and simple. It targets your leadership, your economics and your morale.

    I'm confused why there isn't a variant that switches out the snub nose with a light ppc and a capacitor. Lighter, longer range, similar damage, and frees up two tons for whatever you want.

    Step 1. Acquire Eris ERS-3R mech.
    Step 2. Go to Solaris-7.
    Step 3. Rake in so much money that you stop making money because nobody's stupid enough to bet against you anymore, they've seen you delete too many opponents in a hail of rocket launcher fire.
    .... That or Solaris bans the ERS-3R specifically because of its loadout.

    Actually rocket version isn't that bad. What you need is a field-resupply mech to carry reloads to it and resupply it, and a mech or two to cover and protect it during reloads given how long that takes in combat.
    This is the kind of thing I do a lot with security mechs while trying to fight battlemechs. The need to keep them supplied is the key to winning a battle of attrition because battlemechs do not last long in terms of ammo, and if you can wear them down, there's a lot of money to be made.

    For the 2N, I'm not sure why you would double up on SRM ammo for the MMLs instead of splitting the difference between LRMs and SRMs. The snub PPC's comically long short range, combined with the mech's high mobility, should let the mech open holes for missiles at the 7-9 hex range, where LRMs excel at crit-seeking. Sure, it has the mobility to always be within 3 hexes and rip it with SRMs and the lasers plus the PPC, but SRM and small laser range is a two-way street, and as you point out the 2N's armor isn't particularly special for its era. Counting on being able to always outgun your targets or hit them from behind feels a little optimistic. Mech sounds really fun though.
