- We haven't seen much of the narrative for Assassin's Creed Shadows in the promotional material thus far aside from most of the basic premise. With the return of the classic forms of the Assassin's Creed and Templar Order, many have wondered who will be the Templars in Shadows and what role they will play. While this isn't confirmed yet, in this video I break down who I believe to be the Templars based on what we've seen of the game so far and how their beliefs, and goals of peace through order and control would fit into the narrative for Assassin's Creed Shadows.

The templar cross on the ships is actually an order the Portuguese created after the templar order was abolished called the ordem the Christo. The cross you see in the trailer is seen in a lot of Portuguese ships that explored the world and is still seen and used today such as in the military.

The Templars coming to Japan as part of the Portuguese Jesuits seems like the obvious way to go about it. Yasuke was brought to Japan by an Italian Jesuit named Alessandro Valignano, and I think Valignano in the Assassins Creed universe is the Templar Grandmaster at the time of AC Shadows.
The Iga and Koga clans already trained assassins before the Portuguese arrived, but after the Assassins Brotherhood arrives in Japan the Iga and Koga clans will ally themselves with the Assassin Brotherhood. Sadly, I think this means that in the AC universe, Oda Nobunaga, the guy who made Yasuke a samurai, will be portrayed as a villain who eventually allies himself with the Templars, as in the real world history he basically destroyed the Iga and Koga clans, which we also see happening in the first AC Shadows trailer (Naoe is from Iga). Oda Nobunaga was honestly a great ruler in real life, he really cared about freedom and made life a lot better for the Japanese peasants, but I'm afraid AC Shadows will ignore all of that and make him a villain.
This probably also means they'll portray Tokugawa Ieyasu as a man sympathetic to the Assassins Brotherhood, as he allied himself with Hattori Hanzo and through him got the loyalty of the Iga and Koga clans. Though again, in real life, Hattori Hanzo really wasn't a good person, nor was Tokugawa Ieyasu, but I'm afraid that's the narrative AC Shadows will go with regardless.
I don't have high hopes for AC Shadows, I think the game is going to take a massive crap on Japanese history, just like Valhalla took a massive dump on Viking history.
Previously, the cinematic trailers focused on Assassins hunting down Templars. Since Origins, these trailers have shifted away from that theme. Even the conflict between the Hidden Ones and the Order of Ancients serves more as a backdrop in the modern games. It's quite apparent that this game might take a similar approach.
It was the worst in valhalla for me where most of the story was just revolved around conquering england. I need an actual narrative to keep me interested in progressing.

@@llama6394 Ubisoft Brazil just confirmed that Naoe will feature some of the most impressive parkour the series has ever seen, while Yasuke will have very little, indicating that the story might not fully revolve around assassins. With one of the protagonists, Yasuke, not being an assassin or a hidden one, my concerns grow. First, they announced that Yasuke wouldn't have a hidden blade, and now this. I'm truly worried they might mess up the story.
@@cylon_aspect6474 well I don't think the parkour will be that impressive unless we are just talking about animation and flair. Just because Yasuke isn't an assassin and has no assassin training doesn't mean he can't be part of the brotherhood. He'll still fight for their cause like the recruits in ac3.
We'll have to wait for the game to release to see how good the story is. It doesn't need to revolve entirely around the organisations to tell a good story. Aside from AC1 and Rogue, all the games are focused around the protagonist's personal goals (mostly revenge and liberation).
This is great, at this point I thought most of Memmories was lost to most AC fans, but I genuinely wish they dont retcon it. Additionaly, about the Jesuit missionaries being the ones to spread the Templars to Japan, Memmories says that Alessandro Valinagro (a Templar) inducted Japnese people into the order as he converted them to Christianity, he also was alive during Shadow's time frame so, idk?
This is a theory about who could be the main Templar antagonist and that Yasuke's might've served him at the start of the game:
While most of Yasuke's life remains a mystery, there are a few key things we do know.
He was originally in service to Jesuit Missionaries, as in catcholics, as in TEMPLARS!
Eventually he was given to Oda Nobunaga a feudal lord during the sengoku period who was on good terms with the jesuits, hinting that he might be the main templar antagonist of this game, with Yasuke initially serving him only to betray him by becoming an assassin. Why do i think this well, Nobunaga was eventually betrayed during the Honno-Ji incident, and while most reports said Nobunaga committed seppuku, unaliving yourself with your own sword, there are some reports that say that he was actually Assassinated by a samurai general, which sounds familiar. (it's probably Yasuke)
And as Master Templar speaking for all the templars in the templar order. Ofcourse we work from the shadows to control the world.

I don't think Yasuke himself is or ever was a Templar, but his former master could be. He was brought to Japan by an Italian Jesuit named Alessandro Valignano, who probably bought Yasuke as a slave and employed him as a bodyguard. It is highly likely that in the AC universe, Alessandro Valignano is a Templar, though they could also make him a double-agent who secretly works for Ezio's Italian Brotherhood. I think it's pretty obvious that the Jesuits are going to be the Templars in this setting, though, even if they do make Alessandro Valignano an Assassin.
Edit: Actually, upon further reading on Alessandro Valignano, the guy is very clearly and obviously a Templar; well, not in real life he wasn't, but his attitude and mindset very much align with the Templar ethos in Assassins Creed.
I think he will be a Templar and at the end you choose who kills who

I think it makes sense for the missionaries being templars since Valhalla showed how the religion was partially founded to replace the more pagan influenced Order of the Ancients.
Love the comparisons to Shogun as it was around the same time. Catching the Portuguese ship with a Templar Cross was clutch. As an AC fan, appreciate the details man. Keep it up bro, your videos are great!

I'm gonna guess it's the Portuguese Missionaries who were visiting pretty often in Japan in that time period. I hope it's not Nobunaga cause he's pretty cool. The first great Unifier of Japan, followed by Hideyoshi then Tokugawa
Nobunaga & the Oda clan killed many unarmed civilians, and had a very brutal regime in real history, so it would be perfect to have him in league with the templars.

I'm playing rogue again to get the last trophies I needed and I'm looking at the customizations and the Katana and Wakizashi made me think that they were teasing this game
Its either gonna be the Portuguese 1543 or the Spaniards 1549 that came into contact with Japan in the 16th century, Yasuke served Nobunaga in 1581-1582 till his assasination.

To be honest, Quebec is yet to write a well written and deeply engaging story. And judging from the small dialogue we saw in Shadows, the writing seems chessy and kinda cringe. Hopefully this isnt the case for the overall story.
I thought odyssey was pretty good probably cause I didn’t the bad ending which I find more better then the good ending

Surely Oda Nobunaga is just your George Washington of AC Shadows. Akechi Mitsuhide could be your Templar Grandmaster this guy is a mastermind. Also he could be the one suggested to Nobunaha to attack Naoe's village
The story implying Templars existence is right there before our eyes when we see Naowe trained to be a shinobi (assassin) by her father and her village is burnt down by Oda Nobunaga. Just like every other assassin creed game, the big baddie is most likely the royalty or royalty adjacent in charge of the current time. I think when we see Yasuke team up with Naowe it’s showing Yasuke as a Templar, switch sides to the assassins. I feel like the heavy implication that Oda burnt down the village because it’s a village of assassins is very blatant here.
A story focused around Naoe and Yasuke being pissed because a Templar took something from them and they spend the whole first act plotting to kill him and ending with killing them. Driving Naoe to be a little more ruthless and have an ego full of vengeance but also full of herself whilst yasuke is the opposite going down a similar path until his mentor and samurai brothers help him off it making him the honourable and hopeful person for the people. A new Templar arrives and Naoe is filled with lust and hatred for them after 3 months of solo work picking off the corruption in Japan. She does anything possible to find and kll them including going after and threatening to kill his loved ones and almost does until yasuke stops her. They fight and you choose who you want to win changing the story possibly making two endings. Naoe wins then becomes a cold blooded vigilante who the people fear more than the templars and look to yasuke who is now the main guy trying to stop Naoes cold blooded betrayal path. You get to choose once more who wins and if yasuke wins then you can choose to kill her or not but if Naoe wins then she kills him no matter what.
THIS COULD BE SO GOOD but I swear if it starts off with Naoes dad dying and her just learning to be an assassin LIKE EVERY OTHER AC GAME. Then your just hindering your self from making a story worth ppls money

What I think might be cool for a game that sorta connects every game together is a game where the main character is tasked with uniting every version of the hidden ones under one creed. Maybe it can be the start of when they call themselves the assassins. Since with shadows we have another group that follow the creed and at this point we don't know if they consider themselves as hidden ones yet. Perhaps they could make it more level based, where they have a few different locations around the world they're open world but not as large as the maps have been.
A cool idea would be what if the guy that’s allied with the assassins double crosses them a third or a quarter thru the game and before that point you’re playing as Naoe and Yasuke but obviously working for two different sides and for a mission you could either choose to kill an assassin as yasuke or a Templar as Naoe before they team up
The symbol in the Portuguese fleet is not a Templar symbol, but the Portuguese symbol of that time, that was in all of their ships and man’o’wars (Portuguese invencion)
Nobunaga being an antagonist would be stupid to me because the literal tale end of yasuke’s life in record is him trying to save oda, so how could he be the antagonist?,
also oda elevated yasuke to a certain samurai ish (it’s 50/50) status , so if they just say wow oda bad because killed naoe father is a bit dumb,
I feel akechi mitsuhide or a more prominent Jesuit might be the main villain, i also hate the trend I’ve seen in Ac recently , they are too good , they are too vigilante like and the Templars are more and more cartoonishly bad
we didn’t get a quote on quote good templar since monsieur de la serre in unity and maybe Alfred but he more so created them, even in mirage they were just good people assassins, bad people Templars
ezio had his cartoonishly evil villain but it didn’t really matter because his own personal journey while Simple was quite well executed
Of all things I’m skeptical of the story in this game than anything else, how does no one recognize the oda seal on yasuke’s armor,
how can he kill daimyos and other samurai without being revealed?, if it’s before oda’s death how could yasuke move so freely and cause other factions to never report it to nobunaga and if it’s after nobunagas death how is he still a samurai , in any other franchises I’d trust and wait but in Ac so many questions in history with bad dialogue means we gotta turn our brains off, wish they at least got darbie ,
people hate the bloat in Valhalla’s story but the dialogue was good in a lot of moments, the main story outside the bloat was quite descent ,good at times with one great moment, but shadows had me asking the logic of everything,
also yasuke’s voice actor is good but naoe’s voice actress in gameplay feels like she doesn’t have proper mic, the delivery was descent and stiff , in the cgi trailer she sounded good though

What if Yasuke remains a templar throughout the game and Naoe will be unaware of this? Only us the players will know, and we'll see Yasuke struggle between his growing bond with his assassin companion and the Order he pledged to.
Or perhaps in the game, the Templars and Assassins have a common enemy. A far sinister force that threatens both sides.
I’m pretty sure Oda Nobunaga is a Templar, I mean he was betrayed and committed seppuku, pretty much killed, by Akechi Mitsuhide. Maybe Oda could be a sort of Templar asset, if not a Templar outright.

I believe oda nobunaga is a Templar and the Assassination target from the gameplay reveal is also a corrupt Templar in a powerful position(daimyo)and these Japanese templars have connections with the Portuguese templars
What i am personally wondering is what the modern-day storyline is going to be as I have loved this storyline since the first game

I think the templars are the samurai and yasuke is basically a spy giving information to the assassins
My guess is the Templars in this game might be connected to the Templars in the Webtoons series Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple where in that, we got introduced to a Japanese family called the Shimazu family whom since the Tokugawa Shogunate have been working with the Templars and since in the Webtoons series, a majority of the enemies Edward Kenway faces are Japanese ninjas sent out by the Shimazu family, it makes sense that the Webtoons series would connect with Shadows in that sorta way, and perhaps this game would go into the origins of the Shimazu family and how they became allied with the Templars.

oh the Portuguese are definitely Templars. Their most famous explorers were Knights of the (Templar) Order of Christ and the Portuguese fleets sailed under that cross. The cross is a national symbol to this day. Even in AC Brotherhood Ezio sends assassins to Portugal during King Manuel's reign, who was himself Grandmaster of the Order.
Plot twist yasuke is a Templar who reports to the templar grand master oda nobunaga and betrays naoe in the end☠️☠️☠️
Portuguese here, the cross in the ship is a templar cross, but with a twist is the order of christ, it was the templars that were protected by the poruguese king Dinis I, actually he created de order in 1319, to the knights who survived their mass slaughter throughout Europe.

Im hyped for the game the gameplay looks good and sounds weird but i like that yaskee has no hiddenblade because you have a stealth archetype and a combat archetype and more diffrence in syndicate was not much diffrence
Assuming Nobunaga remains an ally, I was suspecting it would be Akechi Mitsuhide. Mitsuhide is the man who forced Nobunaga to commit seppuku in reality after all. Though I suppose it's possible that the Portuguese could manipulate Akechi into betrayal, as his irl motive isn't actually known.
His armor is broken and you can see it in the cutscenes. I would presume his armor got damaged after he betrayed them
It's hard to say how the Templars are going to be in game, let alone how many there are going to be. But I think there will be a kill list similar to Odyssey and Valhalla, with at least twenty-five targets on that list. First is the Templar Grand Master, then four commanders, and finally twenty regular Templars to kill through the main story and exploring thw open world.
After reading those comments it would mke hella sens if yasuke was a templar, like most reactions i ve seen is. "What s the point of yasuke, everyone will play naoe" a plot twist betrayal would be awesome
I know people are saying it seems like ubi ignored parkour, but to me i think they put work in it
When naoe has to jump spin off a roof, that has to be a player choice. I feel like theres a parkour up, down, climb, and jump. Otherwise how would your character leap, jump to another ledge, spin off, etc? Just got to see more of it in action on more roof tops, as well as if they have some new ground parkour and social stealth options for noae
Idk to me, it just looks like some alternate animations to what was in valhalla and mirage like how vaulting has multiple alternate animations. If you hold A/X and forward while on a ledge, the character will drop down. The grappling hook looks like it will give us a lot of freedom though.
The Templar is most likely the Portuguese or European that brought Yasuke to Japan. And they are influencing the lords to create chaos, etc

The look on NAOE face when YASUKE turns around in front of her burning village.
She has plenty of reason to feel how she does and show the emotions she does during that scene... But what if it is mainly due to the fact that her old partner has turned for the worse and now her enemy. What if that scene in the trailer was towards the END of this story!!?!? 🤯

A little historical facts on the portuguese for instance( I might be slightly wrong on some stuff btw ):
at this place in time they were doing what we call the Expansão Marítima, or in english Sea Expansion, and one of the goals of the sea expansion was to spread christianism.
Because we are indeed a really religious country, but also the fact that during the Reconquista ( when we founded our country ) the templars aided us on the battles against the muslims. And we always had alot of templar connection, heck even one of their strongholds is here in Tomar.
So if any templar shows up in the game, it'll most likely be portuguese in my opinion
I can't really be sure, but I think the cross on the portguese ships, it's not the templar symbol, it is actually the Knights Naval order symbol, really used during that time! I'm portuguese and we have the "templars symbol" in all portuguese museums xD. Great video bro!
Yeah, I don't think they would make it so OBVIOUS... Even our Assassins aren't wearing iconic markers or logos. I think they learned from Syndicate where Templars wear the big red cross like a bullseye. It's likely a more subtle order as the Assassin's are strong at this point in Europe thanks to Ezio.

Would make sense the Portuguese would be Templars considering many Templars fled to Portugal after 1307 and became the Order of Christ in a way... Perhaps they will be working with Akechi who betrayes Nobunaga and a few other Daimyo

If Yasuke is out on his own, (no Nobunaga), perhaps the templars killed him through Akechi Mitsuhide. And then probably try to worm their way in through the council Nobunaga left behind.
The animators didnt put those crosses on the ships as a hint, those are "Maltese cross (Cruz de Malta)" they are very common on portuguese ships. But hey, maybe this historical fact can act as a pretty sweet coincidence for the plot of the game.

What I’m hoping but not expecting to have due to I think AC doesn’t have the balls or talent to pull it off anymore is that Yasuke is a Templar and naoe is an assassin, been missing the grey area that the older games explored when it came to the philosophy of both groups how neither of of them are truly good or bad and not half arsed attempts like unity and rogue

I think yasuke would become an assassin some point into the story, if you listen to the stuff he says in the cinematic he says assassin quotes. like when he said "we are the shadows that served the light" when Naoe, so i think that later in the story Yasuke would join the assassins, i hope that Naoe starts to convince him and eventually teaches him to leap of faith.

What you have said about history i think it s true i believe what General Shepard from cod had said: "History is written by the vicotrs" so i guess that it fits what assassins are saying, so i guess Shepard was a Templar. XD
Mitsuhide is probably an assassin tho I dont really know how Nobunaga is gonna fit into that. Is he a Templar? It matches what they want in terms of power, with him conquering lands left and right.
Is Yasuke not loyal to him to be working with an assassin? Or maybe his goals just lines up with them temporary, and then we get a standoff at the end against him or something

I liked the Naoe gameplay, but to me this gameplay showcase felt very thrown together and random. This was probably a side mission, I guess. Maybe just a random encounter with a target. But you would think they would show off more of the game, especially since they have 2 protagonists. I know there will be more gameplay showcases, but idk. Maybe I am imagining that there is more of the game that there actually is. Like why not showcase the season changing mechanic that impacts your gameplay? Or how crafting and stuff like that works if it's a thing. How does the character switching work outside of a mission where you make the choice in a cutscene? Is it like Syndicate? Is it more dynamic and on the fly like GTA 5 from 2013? That should be a selling point you immediately try to show people for a great first impression.

Now, if they somehow do NOT connect the Assassin/Templar conflict with Mitsuhide Akechi betraying Oda Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple, I will be very surprised. I half expect them to make Akechi a capital A Assassin. Considering the Honnoji Incident was in 1582, only a few years after the starting date of this game, it's free real estate for the lore lol. Comment was written before watching the video, I kinda expect them to retcon this other source material.
