I so miss this era of drum corps. I miss drill, uniforms, and acoustic soloists. Music brought to life by motion. What a fantastic production this was.

I miss it too...this show, PR 2008, SCV 2012, Bluecoats 2014 and so many others, including a lot back to the 90s. These shows still give me goosebumps 10, 20, 30 years later.
I just can't get into the new generation of show design. Doesn't do it for me at all.

I love this show, I just love it. Kamen in from Oregon, not L.A. or N.Y. It's difficult being taken seriously when you're from a small market but we do crank out a few great musicians and actors now and them. I'd like to know who found this composition and how did they sell it to the dir and staff?!

    • @stevehvaughn

I marched this season, and from what I remember, how this show theme came together was pretty remarkable. The idea for the show concept came from the drill writer, Myron Rosander (RIP), very early on in the process. I think the entire staff immediately bought in, and I can't remember if JD or Myron (or both together) picked the source music.
The really incredible part was that they had the entire music book completed at the audition camp. The music really didn't change much at all from auditions up to finals.
The concept was something really close to Myron's heart with his health struggles, and I think this show was almost his goodbye letter, similar IMO to Beethoven's late string quartets in some ways. His speeches to us were extremely emotional when he visited the corps on the road, and I think that all comes through the performance, and really makes this a special show. Loved every minute of that summer (especially compared to the challenges we had in 2009). Myron was taken from us too soon, and I wish we got to see more "Myron x PR" designs, what an incredible human he was.

The whole show is beautiful and emotionally performed, but I have to say the battery had much harder parts than the brass. That bass line was killer from the first hit through the whole performance, the tenors and snares were tight, clean, and expressive, and the front ensemble was the emotional icing on the cake. As a Bari player, I loved the brass arrangement and interpretation of Micheal Kamen’s “New moon in Old moon’s arms” and that tunnel entrance and exit...(my wife: are you crying? Me: uh, allergies!)

So these were made by a friend. I will be buying Topaz for myself next Summer, and I will begin tackling these myself. Eventually, the group I am working on a DCI archive project with, will get every show upscaled. So you WILL see that show. It just might be a few years before we get around to that year.
It takes multiple days just to render one of these videos, that’s mostly why it will take so long
Edit: The 3 that I DO have (the ones posted on my channel) exist because I specifically requested them as they are some of my favorite shows. We will get there though. Subscribe, and you will get notified of my upcoming videos, which will be handing out public links to our archive project. (In the next two months)

I know a guy who knows a guy who has Topaz AI. I also know another guy who knows a guy who has a Dropbox full of every show in the highest available quality. So for this video, it started as a .mkv rip from the 2010 Blu-ray, then converted to .mp4 using ffmpeg, then upscaled with Topaz AI.
