Kathi T and Kayla, I totally agreee with both of you. Still hard to believe that Gary is gone. So good to see him happy and playing his guitar like no one else ever could. Gary was REO, I only listen to the lps/cds that he is playing on. Yes, REO died when Gary left. Wish he knew how much he was/is loved.
Wow, Gary Richrath just up front by himself and nailing like A Boss right on national TV and making it look easy and fun. R.I.P to my Home Boy, no one could do it like him.
His drinking was getting out of hand and had been for some time. From what I have read he was becoming a bit too undependable and was showing up already half sloshed. They didn't want too but it was necessary to cut and replace him. The good news is that they are talking again and both Gary and Kevin would be open to do something together again if the other approached the subject. Stubborn pride on both sides. There is a vid on here where Gary returns and reunites with the guys for a couple of tunes. He looks like hell but he can still play the guitar like a mad man!
***** Couldn't agree more Scott. The guitar and Gary have a bond it seems. The good news is that he has done a few 'impromptu" gigs with the boys and all are open to working with each other again. Gary is beating his personal demons. I only hope that he keeps on the right track and stays clean and serene. I hate to imagine a world without Garys riffs.
I am as happy as I can be to have been in my high school years when this music came about. Damn it those were great times. REO Speedwagon, Journey, 38 Special, Boston and others on the heels of Chicago and Led Zeppelin, damn what a time.
If you would have told me 20 years ago that this song would one day make me cry, I would have laughed in your face. Guess I've been rolling a long time now....RIP Gary.
This song has always mesmerized me, whether at the gym or just cruising in my car. What a remarkable song. Love the piano all throughout the song, as well as the organ and guitar solos. Everything was so ingeniously devised and performed fabulously.
When this was on American Top 40, with Kasey Kassem, I was trying to remove the header bolts on a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 Cobra Jet R Code, to sap out engines. REO and I, got er' DONE!
Such a great show. Every Saturday at midnight. All the greatest bands live. No lip sync no bullshiit. Just real talent. These guys were phenomenal. Then MTV came out and turned everything to shit
I agree. Midnight special; every Friday night & a few other shows, but I've forgotten the names of them; my age I reckon. . Saw Steven Tyler/ Areosmith for the first time on there & was so mesmerized. I still am..Lol. Very long time ago. And...I'm late to this party. 😆 Cheers !
Gary was, and always will be REO speedwagon, without him they are just another band to me.Often imitated, but never duplicated. I'm so glad I have three old vinyl records in great shape REO T.W.O., Lost In A Dream and Riding The Storm Out. I think the Righteous Brothers said it best, if there's a rock and roll heaven, then you know we've got a hell of a band. Gary sure could make that les Paul talk like no one else could in the manner that he did. Gary you did it man, even though you were in question of yourself. I hope he knows now how much people loved to hear him play!
I cannot stop coming back to this vid...From Gary just wailing to the keyboard guy kicking ass...this makes music look like pure FUN....not many videos actually capture what ROCK is...this does...REO!!!
In the 70's REO was the band. It was such a shame to see the split between Kevin and Gary. They were an awesome combination. This song still gives me goosebumps to this day. RIP Gary.
This is far more than a great song. This is a masterful piece of phenomenal musicianship that reaches into the depths of ones heart, mind, body and soul.
Okay, so I've watched this same video a dozen or so times........it just does NOT get old! These guys are so underrated....Gary is SUCH a great guitarist.......piano, organ, drums, vocals....just pristine!
Best of both worlds in one song!! Gary and Kevin both did top-notch creativity and craftmanship on this song. And this performance is so fun, I think it changed the lives of those girls in front of Gary. :-)
Those close ups of Kevin's eyes are amazing. I was in my 30's when they came out, but rock stations did not play their music. They were only heard on AM non-stereo radio stations. I was and still am a rock and roll woman, and I am glad I listened to AM once in awhile. I fell in love with them immediately. By the way, I am talking about the USA.
I thought I had seen every old REO clip over the years.... damn this one brought me to tears. My God was GR underrated as a musician, songwriter and performer. What an absolute stud. RIP Gary.
Awesome image of Gary following his bliss. Such a RIVETING performance that I keep revisiting to experience the positive vibes that still flow from these guitar riffs. He was a national treasure and we didn't even know it.I know that heaven is rocking harder because he's there.
Yeah this is Definitly one of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time. Just feel the high energy and optimism, can't beat it. God I miss the days of the great classic rock n roll bands. Nothing gets close today
This is the most talented live show iv ever seen. Cant think of anything that closely compares. This was done live with none of todays technology. They played in tune with each other and done it amazingly!
I am 60 years old now and i still listen to these guys from TH-cam and brings me back to my youthful days. i have downloaded their music and play it when i drive but this song is all my all time favourite. brightens and lifts up my day. cant help but move along with the songs. You guys are awesome. Listening to them in 2020 still. Roll with the changes, baby!!
Love that crunchy Gibson Les Paul sound ... this is one of my all time favorite songs of all time. Gotta hear at least 2 x every time , along with Time for me to Fly Repeat !
It is maybe not the best song in all of modern music, but there is a part of me that thinks that "Roll with the Changes" is the ROCK + ROLL song of all time!
Gary makes people wanna be rock stars. Amazing technique, flashy execution, and the sheer enjoyment in his face and body mechanics. I bought the sheet music to this song and am disheartened at how difficult the piece is for someone my level. Gary makes it look so easy! What a joy to watch.
There was no one like Gary Richrath. I got chills the first time I heard him, and just got them in the same place 40 years later. Thanks for that, Gary.
It's the fall of 1971 and I am sitting in a local watering hole in Champaign, Illinois with my date on a saturday night getting hammered. I am not sure but I think the name of the bar was Chances R. Just can't remember for sure. Some band I had never heard of, was playing that night and they ROCKED! Had no idea who they were and had never heard of them before. Turns out it was REO Speedwagon.
Gary's a good Scot. Used to watch the Midnight Special on Friday nites and Saturday Night Live Saturday nights...that pretty much was my weekend when I was a kid :) Not bad looking back at it 40 years later!
Today is Tues Nov 6, 2018. I'm an RN who 2 weeks ago had my 5th lumbar surgery, this one to stop pending paralysis. I'm not seeking sympathy- far worse things I'm a youthful 59. Music from these priceless musicians (and, sure, others too) are at the top of my list for pain control b4 & during recovery. They keep me rolling-- really. Their music takes me away from the tougher days. More importantly, their music takes me TO a sense of happiness, not to mention utter respect for their talent. I'm walking better and better, each day starting with phones (great sound) on my head, listening to healing talent. Sad to say, I've been a rare concert goer-never cut out that sorta "me" time. Would love to learn that I might still see REO, standing on two legs, smiling and shedding some tears. Sorry to ramble. Now a shower and off to vote. Brian Johnson.
Dear MR Johnson, my name is William , I too love R.E.O. and had the blessing of being able to see them 2 times it was a Virginia beach budwieser concert , so where ever you stood that's was your spot for the night , I have to say im not bragging , but I felt super ass lucky as hell I got my wife to hang out with me right at the very front of the stage for 5 hours before they came out, your going to love this, as we were standing there Kevin Cronin ,(Lead Singer) came over right in front of us so many times and looked straight down at us as if to apologize for his sweat flying all over us,lol, it was great !! my wife was bitchin up a storm lol, luckily I had stuck a hand cloth in my shorts pocket and was using it to wipe off my face , I still have the wash cloth which I wrapped up in another towel and placed it in a box and sealed it and marked it Kevins sweat rag,lol it was great , we could crystal clear see he was saying sorry though we couldn't hear him but it wasn't haed to read his lips as he looked right at us and said it , it was an awesome show , they played all there most popular songs that night , I was surprised Kevin had so much energy ,he was all over that stage , playing guitar, piano, singing , the one thing he didn't do was play the drums , im sure if there was another set up on stage he would have, Kevins s super talented for sure, our 2nd time seeing him was in Baltimore ,MD pier 5 pavilion , again general admission , and yes up to the stage we went early as hell again pretty much a repeat of the 1st show , I made sure to bring 2 towels one for each of us , and sure enough Kevin was full of spunk and was sweating like mad , I cold have squeezed my rag of his sweat into a cup, lol, I Love his talent and performances but that's as far as it goes for me, I wasn't trying to save even Kevin,s sweat, lol, though the thought did cross my mind, lol, but no, another awesome all hits show , glad I was blessed to catch them 2 times being smashed into the stage by the crowd , one thing I noticed about Kevin , he seemed to like being in the center of the stage and if your in the crowd he would go back an forth from the bass player and back to the center , once in a while he would go to the other side but the center and over near the bass guy and back he did that same move pretty much all night including a couple of run,s up to the drummer and stand there for a min, then right back down to the center, to give me and my wife another sweat bath, lol, he had a look on his face as if he had remembered us from the beach show , when he seen he was sweating on us again, its like O.M.G. im sweating on these guys again, lol, he made the, damn im sorry I keep soaking you guys, lol, you could see it in the look in his face him mouthing sorry guys and even rolled his eyes as he was the bad guy, lol, it was great, hey when your at the very front of any stage where the guys are up there playing under all those hot ass lights its kinda hard not to sweat, so being in that spot which is awesome when you love the bands music its no big deal, I say go ahead guys and sweat your asses off but play that awesome music and give us the best show you can possibly kick out to us , hell yeah !!!! ROCK AN ROLL,N BABY !!! W.H.W. Friday july 16th 2021 4:03am
I saw REO numerous times at the late, great "Echodrome" (Brown County Area, Green Bay, WI) in the early to mid 70s. Gary had an unbridled joy of playing guitar. Seldom did he ever give less than 100% enthusiasm in those days. RIP Gary...thanks to you this song is part of the soundtrack of my life.
Not a REO fan, but Gary is one of the best guitar players. Def underrated just for the fact this band had this amazing of a guitar player makes me listen.
YOU KNOW HOW GREAT A BAND IS WHEN THET CAN PLAY LIVE LIKE THIS !!! FANTASTIC MUSICIANS ON A TV SHOW THAT ALL PERFORMERS HAD TO PLAY LIVE , NO LIP-SYNC WHATSOEVER!!! TAKE THAT JAYZ AND BEYONCE AND MADONNA!
ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK N ROLL SONGS EVER!!!!!!!!!! I saw REO recently at Freedom Hill, 8-11-2013, and I was lucky enough to be back stage and asked Kevin for a picture together and he was very accommodating. Thanks Kevin!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and they ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have always loved REO. Kevin still has a decent voice after all these years. Gary Richrath was one hell of a guitar player in the day, may he rest in peace. I had my hair in the 80s like Kevin Cronin's too, and I am a female. Good hair is just good hair no matter on a male or female.
Holy shit. I remember watching this when I was a teenager! I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV, mouth agape watching Gary. Such great musicians. RIP Gary.
And we got to see stuff like this EVERY WEEK! Rock Concert and The Midnight Special were fan-fucking-tastic. No lip synching, no auto tuning, no sampling, just a bunch of musicians playing the shit out of their songs........live.
How come music like this and all these great band´s music came to an end? It is over, finish. No more rock bands. So sad! This is real talent and sooo cool, Love TOTO, REO, Journey, Foreigner, Van Halen, and so on and so on.Ohh the 80´s!!
don't dis the 90's! And Green Day's best two albums are American Idiot and 21st century breakdown, both in the 2000's. Yes, rock ruled the pop, rock, and soul charts in the 70's. Now the corporations run the roost of what's played. No variety of artists.
Bruno Behrend Naw it was hard drugs and dames....the 2 biggest killers of great musicians. If only they had stuck with the pot and booze, the last few albums wouldnt be such stinkers.
I’ve seen him sitting in on a few diff midnight special performances. And yes that Hammond sounds amazing. Imagine he had a Leslie spinning next to him.
He'll also extend a whole word just to make it fit with the lyrics. It's rudimentary, but it actually works with REO SW. I couldn't imagine REO SW without Kevin's vocalisms.
Most criminally underrated guitar player ever in rock music.
not just criminally underrated as a guitar player, he was also a great song writer (i.e golden country).
Robert bishop agreed!
Surely one of them
You got that shit right!
+Patrick Smith When they dropped him, Epic dropped the band.
Richrath plays that guitar like he invented it! !
Hell yeah he does!

The lead player is Claptonesque.
Best song ever from REO. This song really takes me back. Liked it then, love it now.
Pure talent . No new bands could do this in a million years.
No musical talent today. Hip-hop people talk-sing stupid lyrics to a repetitive digital beat and call it "music."

Hey! Just now saw your remarks. Screen shot saved them for the joy you communicated re being “there.” BrianRN
Saw them when I was in the Navy in 1985, Hampton Roads Virginia, within the Top 4 concerts I ever did see, was a huge surprise.
Haha...I'm a navy guy too...Hampton Roads...now that is one fun place (kidding)....
He looks so happy and smooth. And yes his effortless solos are always incredible.
What ever happened to just good music! Miss Reo Speedwagon!
Oh, and they ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of my all time favorite guitar solos.....just the perfect blend grit and scream.....
LOVE REO! RIP Gary awesome guitar player!!!
RIP Gary.
I taped this Midnight Special on my Beta Max and watched it about a thousand times. Great to see it again.
No variety of artists.
it will happen again my friend, one day
They smoked too much pot and started writing really crappy music.
Their last albums were awful.
Bruno Behrend
Naw it was hard drugs and dames....the 2 biggest killers of great musicians. If only they had stuck with the pot and booze, the last few albums wouldnt be such stinkers.
the dude in TOTO tried to pawn his '74 Les Paul on TV show....Pawn Starz........very cool! I'm OG old skool! all smiles here!
one of the best songs of that era, by one of the most under rated band of the era. They were before their time.
This song features the greatest Hammond B3 organ solo ever recorded. Rock on Neil Doughty!
He never gets enough credit for his talent either!
I’ve seen him sitting in on a few diff midnight special performances. And yes that Hammond sounds amazing. Imagine he had a Leslie spinning next to him.
I could never get over Kevin adding all those syllables at the end of words. I can’t not hear them now.
God, I cannot unhear that now! LOL. Never noticed it before.
He'll also extend a whole word just to make it fit with the lyrics. It's rudimentary, but it actually works with REO SW. I couldn't imagine REO SW without Kevin's vocalisms.
That's just his accent coming through. This is the only version I play because of it. Makes the song flow better.
