    y'know it could be fun to see glyphs return as, like, auras with flash that buff a wall _super_ efficiently and get away with it because ... y'know, you're buffing a _wall_
    i say aura in particular because it's kinda silly that the effects only last a turn, when the idea is that you're drawing / carving a symbol of power onto a wall to empower it

    Early magic was very weird about how it seemed to think Walls, the actual color of spells and life gain at a high cost would be a core part of the game and all of that panned out to just not happen. Still I'm glad cards like early walls matter and color matter cards exist because it can let you brew some real weird niche commander decks these days. Not good commander decks mind you, but I do personally find color control to be fun if not particularly useful. And even then, the Laces are a bad way to do that.

      Simple...it rotated out of regular play before many people had a chance to acquire it. Magic came out in 1993. Legends was out in 1994. By 1996, they did Chronicles to reprint Legends cards (and mostly novelties like the Elder Dragons). I don't even think Legends was around for Standard/Type II (if it did, it was in the infancy of the formats).

    To make Withering Hex much worse: remember that it is the aura that gets the plague counters... which then leads to the creature getting the debuff for each counter. This means that if at any time in the match the Hex gets removed, all that debuff also go with it. It would have been MARGINABLY better if the counters would remain is the aura is dealt with but nope
    Another equally baffling Aura is Torture way back in Homelands. The art is creepy, just wish the card actually did something. It's a 1 mana aura that allows you to pay B1 to give enchanted creature a -1/-1 counter. Basically, its a BB1 sorcery that gives a -1/-1 counter to any target. Yea... for that rate, I think I'll just go with Dark Banishing?
    Also, you mentioned the Glyph of Destruction gives +10 / +10... actually it gives +10 / +0. While the distinction is very minimal considering the wall will go boom at the end of turn, you just have to remember it if you use cards on it that cares about the wall's toughness (i.e Doran or the new Acades). On another note, adding Fling to the mix makes it fun: it's basically like throwing an entire skyscraper at your opponent XD

  • @Nr4747
    @Nr4747 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Small correction: Withering Hex actually doesn't place -1/-1 counters on creatures, but "plague counters" that are useless without the aura, making the card even worse.

      Nearly any symmetrical card can be "good"(ish) when you take into account that you're the one planning for it. In a vacuum, a card like Stasis, Standstill, or Winter Orb would be horrible. But the decks that ran them were designed around turning the symmetry into advantage. Now, Tahngarth's Glare is no Stasis, but it does give both players some knowledge and deck manipulation. It's highly unlikely your opponent can take advantage of that further than the base effect. If you are playing it, likely you both have ways to undo what your opponent did to your library (any shuffle effect) and take advantage from the knowledge you gained.

    The leech cycle works well if u run painters Servant and donate the leech. So if opponent isn't using white, you cast the Servant choose white then donate the leech. All opponents spells are white, therefore cost an additional white, which they are not playing. If they can't kill the leech they can cast anything. Lol

  • @EnderPryde
    @EnderPryde ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In Glyph of Destruction's defense specifically: there *are* ways you might be able to exploit the effect that aren't terrible.
    For one, it's a destroy effect, so if you cast on a wall that is indestructible, or is able to regenerate it's a really powerful combat trick.
    For two, the destroy effect is delayed, so it doesn't resolve until end of turn, giving you an opportunity to block, kill a thing in the block, and then use a Fight/fling effect to kill another target at instant speed before the destroy trigger occurs.
    *Granted* these are pretty niche and you'd have to be pretty hard into a wall centric deck to do anything even worthwhile, but "top 10 worst", I'd say it isn't

    I used to play a Black/White Knight deck with the black and white laces. Unfortunately, I thought they were good because of the way the original manual that came with starter decks phrased the rule for protection. It stated something like "spells of that color don't affect the protected creature at all" which I thought to mean sweepers and untargeted effects. So someone would cast a sweeper, I'd lace it to either black or white and the knights that had protection survived. Unfortunately, that's not actual how it works

    I feel like Tahngarth's Glare would actually see play if given Pioneer and Historic legality. I would run it in my Historic Boros Prowess deck and use it on like turn 3 to stop the opponent from drawing their board clear or removal spell while also triggering my Swiftspear and Lumimancer, and the downside doesn't matter because I have the damage on board to kill them regardless of if I top deck a land. Izzet Phoenix/Izzet Drakes might also like it because it counts as a sorcery for Phoenix/Drakes and has the same effect of stopping the opponent from drawing their answers. These types of Izzet decks run enough cantrips anyway that the downside of letting the opponent do the same to you just doesn't really matter -- they'll just draw right through the reordered cards anyway.

    Withering Hex is even worse than you realized because the creature doesn’t actually get -1/-1 counters, the hex gets plague counters instead, so if the Hex is destroyed before it gets enough plague counters to kill your target, the creature loses nothing.

    I'd rather have Cocoon than any of the laces. It actually has potential to affect the board positively, whereas the laces need...a LOT of help from the cards around it.

    • @astuteanansi4935

      You have to remember that it only works on walls, which can't attack, and *only* while blocking. You could potentially deal some real damage with Fling, yes, but once your opponents wise up to your tricks, they'll usually be able to play around your strategy. And against any control deck without creatures the card is completely useless

    • @omarortiz9660
      @omarortiz9660 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@astuteanansi4935 im not saying its a good card, but for me is not in top 10 of the worst (Merchant Ship is waaaaay worse). You can force combat whit a lot of cards and some walls can overcome that effect (wall of junk bounces, wall of reverence gives you 11 life, amarantine wall becomes indestructible).
      Again, its not a good card, but could be useful, not like the other 9

    Nizzahon is misreading the card at 6:05 by giving the wall plus 10 toughness. It gives +10/+0. Doesn't matter in most situations anyway.

    • @EnderPryde
      @EnderPryde ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, the effect also prevents all damage done to the wall for the rest of the turn, so it's... *sort of* like giving it +10/+10?
      Does mess with Wither/Infect if the Wall has Reneneration or is Indestructible.

    • @Lovuschka
      @Lovuschka ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EnderPryde That's why I said it doesn't matter in most situations anyway.
      Also wasn't Wither/Infect the effect that damage is dealt in the form of -1/-1 counters? So if damage is prevented, no counters are added at all.

    • @EnderPryde
      @EnderPryde ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lovuschka correct, that's why it messes with those abilities.
      The glyph prevents the damage, so the indestructible/regenerating wall doesn't get the -1/-1 counters that would *normally* ignore indestructible/regeneration.
