Finally took the road test and got my license this Wednesday! Thank you for this video! Today's drive to work went fairly well, but I need to get comfortable driving on the expressway again and not speeding to make left turns before the light changes 🤦🏾♀️

Hi Rick! One important question for you: Just before turning right, can I get into the parking lane a bit? Difficult to explain, but it would be like steering the car to the right before turning, so when I am in the intersection, the turn will not be wide. Thanks!

can you explain why do you stop completely before the crosswalk at 7:14? I thought we don’t have to stop at a Yield sign. Thank you
Hi Rick. My daughter failed her ICBC road test for the third time today. The second fail was because she wasn't doing a shoulder check on right turns through an uncontrolled intersection. Today, she was failed for not turning her head far enough, again on right turns at uncontrolled intersections. I understand that shoulder checks in this specific scenario are a requirement on the test, but I cannot understand why. I assume it is for cyclists, and having been a cyclist my whole life, I am very aware of watching for them when driving. When driving, I am checking my mirrors regularly to check for cyclists, so that I know if they are coming up or near my vehicle. In busy traffic, especially where there are many busy bike lanes, like downtown Vancouver, I definitely do check my shoulder. However, in the scenario like where you are turning right in an uncontrolled intersection in the video, driving the speed limit and no bike lane or cyclists passed, checking half a block prior as well as during the actual turn, it's my opinion that a driver is creating more danger by taking their eyes off of their path than is relieved by doing the shoulder checks. If you have a minute, could you please explain ICBC's logic on something like this and how that could be sufficient to fail an otherwise perfect road test?
Other hazards can suddenly appear besides cyclists. A young child or an unleashed pet or a feral cat could suddenly dart out. I saw another driver strike a feral cat that way.

I’ve had motorcycles try to pass me on a turn, and sometimes cars (!) will try and pass me on a shoulder or bicycle lane. I think a shoulder check is good insurance for those (albeit) rare circumstances. And if you leave a good gap between yourself and the car in front of you it’s not dangerous to do the shoulder check.

Question, if making a right hand turn onto a double lane headed one direction. If cars are on the outside lane, is it proper to make the turn as cars are approaching on the out side lane, not the inside lane that you are making the turn on.
How do you know when to go and when not to go where cross traffic does not stop when is it safe to enter or how far away the cars have to be ?

Random note among so many good videos: I'm currently going through practice material for my driving test in Washington State and the practices tests emphasize to NEVER let the steering wheel slide in your hands under any circumstance, as it's a "unnecessary risk" to safe driving and vehicle control.

What if you are on a road, no light, and you are making a right onto a main road that has 2 lanes going the same direction that you have to turn in to. Do you wait for both lanes to be clean in case that outer lane driver needs to get in that right land to make a turn? or do you go when that right lane is clear?
Is it ok to keep a 8 - 10 mile speed while turning? Or is this speed only for the time when you start to turn?
Rick, for the purposes of a driving test - when you are in those slip lanes going right at more complex intersections, while you're yielding/shoulder checking for traffic, should you stop before the cross walk or just before the roads meet if there are no pedestrians around? I've been scanning for pedestrians, but pausing right before entering the road so I can slip into the gap on the new roadway more easily/quickly but I want to do it the right way if this isn't it...?

Where are you supposed to come to a stop at when you come to a stop?
Would love to understand the A Pillar more- so do you turn after your whole front wheels have crossed the curb?
Just turn to the right when you can see the edge of the road onto which you're turning. In other words, all the car in front of the steering wheel should be in the intersection, and then turn to the right. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Rick, I'm 2 years late, but quick question. I was watching your left turn video and I remember you said you shouldn't angle your car (or wheels) when making a turn because it could be a danger such as being pushed directly into traffic. Does the same thing apply for right turns (on and off controlled intersections)?
For right turns you want to angle your car a bit to the right to avoid going straight out and making turns too wide.

When turning right out of a side street into a road with two-lanes in each direction, do I need to wait until both lanes are clear before pulling out or can I go when only the inside lane (the one I am turning into) is clear? I see many people do this but I'm not sure whether it is legal.

I know that is possible to turn right at an intersection when red signal (only if there is no sign - don't turn on red), but what about red arrows? The same as normal red signals? Is possible to turn right on red arrow if there is no special sign?
If there’s a red arrow, you cannot turn right unless it’s green. (Well at least here in California)
In Wisconsin, they allow right turn on red arrows from any lane as long as there's no sign saying otherwise
On a major cross road and the traffic on our right don't allow space to get into right lane. Should we gun it or miss our turn completely
There will always be another turn.
I feel a little uneasy turning right into a lane when there are vehicles parked nearby. How to deal with those?

So a few days ago I actually failed my driver because I of turning on a red light. I didn't know i could just wait. Idk why but when Shoulder I thought the cars on left were far enough for me to make the turn. But now that I know I can just wait for the light to be green I think I can do it.

The other person should've gone first if the way was clear in both directions. Drivers must yield to others that have already arrives at the intersection. It's common courtesy to let them go first, and it would also be defensive driving. They could be impatient and could become aggressive if you "cut" in front of them.
Hello Kevin Alexander - You're right about other drivers becoming aggressive. And if so, just let them go first. I would disagree about common courtesy because the ROW rules at 2-WAY stops are different than those at 4-Way STOPS. See above and see the video at 2:41. All the best, Cheers Rick

In New York state, turning right on a red light, is not allowed!
Only in the 5 boroughs of New York City my friend: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Prohibited by signs in other parts of the state. All the best, Cheers Rick
If the lane is straight/right only and there is somebody in front of you waiting to go straight across the intersection, that means you would have to wait until the light turns green on the person in front of you first and then you can turn right after that.

Yes it was two left lane. So i was in second left lane where i would turn and end up in the right lane where i needed to be to turn into the parking lot, so in that scenario i would have to slow down and just turn right in to the parking lot even though there are cars behind?@smartdrivetest
I hit the curb when I did a right turn during my skill test. And I failed automatically. :(
