Rick, thank you SO much for all the resources you provide for learners on TH-cam. I started 2023 not even knowing what a parking brake is, and by God's grace ending it as a licensed driver! 😁🥳

When I did my road test the only thing the instructor said to me before we started was to do lots of shoulder checking! I passed but I was docked a few points for not doing a shoulder check properly when changing lanes and for stopping when not nessesary at the intersection. Thank goodness your allowed a few mistakes!

I’ve been driving 40+ years & I like your videos to keep my driving safe by refreshing my knowledge. Traffic where I live near Atlanta GA requires exceptional skills in my opinion. Even my brother, (who was a med-evac helicopter pilot in Vietnam & safety director for a major airline) told me after driving in my area: “If you can drive here, you can drive anywhere!” He thought it was insane here. I think too many people used video games as their driving experience.

I'm 41 and had to retake road test. I drove straight truck for some time as a sub and clocked many miles and hours. Now commercial is far more stressful due to dot regulations, insurance etc. So that frame of mind became my primary driving method. Reliance on mirrors, memory and peripheral we're essential and checking blind spots especially on passenger side was at the mercy of second hand source. I took this recent test as though I was in my truck! Didn't even think twice about it until my examiner was berating me for head movement and not checking blind spots! It's been a bit since my last test and it's easy to develope bad methods or right vehicle for test wrong method and be totally oblivious. Thanks for your helpful reminders!

Great video! Watching this one again. It’s one of my biggest struggles, but recently I realized I haven’t been looking far enough ahead and that helped a little bit. I need to get better with 1. Observation forwards 2. Checking my side mirrors comfortably, when I failed I was mostly fake checking because I tend to weave or get distracted when I look in them (that wasn’t anything the examiner brought up but I was still doing that back then) Guess you just need to look long enough for your brain to take a picture 😁
Shoulder Checks are Key i always do them When merging onto the Highway Turning off the Main Road. When doeing a Turn Left or Right Right before merging out into the Traffic.

5:56 You can use a backup camera in MI as well on the road test, but it's good to be able to reverse without it. You don't want to learn how to reverse just with your mirrors/back window when your rear camera breaks.

I have a quick question with some relevance.I take my drivers test in the latter of the week coming up.When parallel parking is it permissible to utilize the “right hand on the passengers side headrest “,to execute the parallel park ,even once you are stationed at your 45 degree position to start your initial back up.This maneuver is done globally ,however in all your comments I have not seen this question. What is the protocol?
Apologies for the late response. Have you done you test yet? Yes, you can put your hand on the back of the passenger's seat when reversing. See this vid for more info: th-cam.com/video/otBIqU3FrAY/w-d-xo.html Drop us a note if we can help further, Cheers Rick

Hi Negan Cat - you are correct my friend. And often, if students are turning the wheel when they're shoulder checking, it's often a result of shoulder checking and moving their head too slow. All the best, Cheers Rick
I failed because I didn't use a complete shoulder check plus mirrors fur every turn and back up. It was always a shoulder check not just a shoulder check plus merging. It was hard.

Hi. I always get dinged for shoulder checks no matter how hard I tried doing it when changing lanes and making turns. they said I was doing unnecessary headchecks like come on I failed the first time not doing it now they tell me I was doing unnecessarly. I failed 4 times now and I am losing hope. the 4th one I was doing well until they changed the route of what I practiced and move to a intersection I wasn't familiar with. Hawaii's dmv instructors are a pain to pass :( and I am losing hope

My first attempt on getting g2(Ontario) wasn’t successful due to one reason. I was told by the instructor to pull over the parking lot because we were done evaluating, but then there was a car in front of me which is also a driver doing park testing and somewhat he hit the pole to the car I was driving. I was just about to release the brakes and pull up the handbrakes but next thing I hear was a small bump. Was it really on my account?

Guys, please please please REMEMBER to check all your lights and main functions work! I went to the Willimantic DMV today, everything was good until the inspector went to the back and came back to my window telling me that my top brake light doesn't work. She gave me the opportunity to fix it in that moment, but I wasn't able to find the necessary tools to do it. I'm going to reschedule for tomorrow though. These are some of the actions she wanted me to perform: - Blinkers (right, left) - High lights (front) - Tap on the brakes (back)

Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempts my friend. That’s a good insight that you need more practice. Have you taken driving lessons with an instructor there in CT? Cheers Rick

Hi, firstly, want to say thank you a lot for the helpful videos. I’m staying in Netherlands and I have already 62 hours of driving lessons. Never drive car before back in Vietnam. So I’m struggling with my vision. My instructor said I don’t look far enough, still focus on my front buble which prevents me from analyzing and predicting the traffic. In Netherlands, we are not allowed to practice driving without the instructors from driving schools and the fee is quite high. So I try to watch TH-cam videos to help myself after my driving lessons. Could you please share some tips for my problem? Thank you.

I failed the NY road test on my first two attempts, partially because I didn’t move my head. What’s frustrating is that if take my attention off of what’s in front of me then I can lose focus. It’s a very stupid rule. Nevertheless, rules are rules. I’ll follow the advice of this video.
Can you give your comments on the proper hand position for reversing? Some say both hands have to be on the steering wheel while others say one hand on the wheel and the other on the back of the passenger head rest is fine. Please what's the right way to pass the road test.

Passed mines couple days ago. Your videos really help

Congrats🎉🎉🎉🎉

Checking my side mirrors comfortably, when I failed I was mostly fake checking because I tend to weave or get distracted when I look in them (that wasn’t anything the examiner brought up but I was still doing that back then)
Guess you just need to look long enough for your brain to take a picture 😁
Shoulder Checks are Key i always do them
When merging onto the Highway
Turning off the Main Road.
When doeing a Turn Left or Right
Right before merging out into the Traffic.
I passed my driving test today in Southern California, Thank you for making these videos it really did helped me and I do very much appreciate it. 👍

5:56 You can use a backup camera in MI as well on the road test, but it's good to be able to reverse without it. You don't want to learn how to reverse just with your mirrors/back window when your rear camera breaks.
See this vid on backup cameras and their use for driver's tests: th-cam.com/video/BEJED-3Swzw/w-d-xo.html You are right you can use a backup camera, but you can't use it as your primary line of sight. All the best, Cheers Rick

Thank you for the video sir, I have to do my road test but I'm afraid, but everyday I watched your videos it's give me confidence and I'm not afraid anymore, I will do my test this summer or before, thank you again
Hi Mtm Désigner - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. We're happy to hear we could help out. I would also counsel you to take a practice driving test with a local driving instructor. This will give you experience on the test route and you'll know which skills you need to strengthen to pass your road test. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you so much Rick, yes I take a driving cours with a instructor every 2 weeks, I just afraid of parallel parking, the rest I'm OK with that, but every time I watched your videos it's give me hope
Hi Mtm Désigner - Thank you for your reply. You're working with an instructor - that's awesome. Try some of the exercises in this video to improve you parallel parking skills: th-cam.com/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/w-d-xo.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you so much, will watch it
Hi Mtm Désigner - you are most welcome my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
I passed my road test today in Oshawa drive test
Thanks a lot for your videos 🙏❤
Congratulations my friend. That's awesome news. Thank you for dropping back and letting us know. Where did you go for your first drive? All the very best, Cheers RIck
Thank you so much dear Rick,
I failed the first time unfortunately my mistake was in Observe properly. Then I found your channel and followed your videos and tips . I am very happy that I passed. I went to Ontario Oshawa drive test for the first time . Thanks again 🙏❤️
That's awesome my friend. How's the driving going? Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest excellent 🥰❤️ Thanks for asking 😊
Move your head not the wheel keep a firm grip on the direction when your shoulder checking
Hi Isabel Primmer - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your question. This video will help too: th-cam.com/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/w-d-xo.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Hey rick so i really would like a video to teach how to drive an SUV because i feel a bit intimidated and paranoid i will sideswipe cars and wouldnt know how to maneuver appropriately.
Hi Iceberg Slim - Thank you for your comment, and reminder.. I'm on it my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

What is the best way to practice scanning and observation, when we are doing social distancing?
Apologies for the late response. How is the driving going? Have you taken your test? Cheers Rick
I’ll be driving with my instructor next week, but I’m really nervous since I struggle with timing and hesitate a lot and I’ve only been on the road for a week. Quick question: how long does it usually take to get used to driving?
I love the first generation CRV. Personally, I drive a 99 CRV that is approaching 170,000 miles.
Thanks so much, this was a great video lesson. at around 4:22 you say down the road, shoulders, are we doing a shoulder check or looking at the shoulder of the road? What are we looking for if shoulder of the road? Thanks for your help.
I wish you were my instructor!
I am your instructor my friend. I can help you out here online. All the best, Cheers Rick

i passed in Pennsylvania!
What is half a block distance in meters?
At a intersection how do you observe the intersection quickly so if a driver is not paying attention or runs a light or stop sign.
Hi Christopher Bontrager - Thank you for your query. As you're approaching the intersection, scan left, centre, right, and then just before entering the intersection scan left again. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest thank you very much for your information that I asked you about, greatly appreciate all your great videos on smart drive, you also taught me to do a quick shoulder check witch been trying to do as a habit I'm trying to train to be a couch driver. I have a learner's permit.
Hi Christopher Bontrager - you are most welcome my friend. You are going to make it as a coach driver. All the best, Cheers Rick
My mom used to get mad at me if I turned my head to look at a wing mirror and always said it should just be a quick glance. Thank you for telling me otherwise, it always felt really weird to me.
Thanks for the information, you are the best!

My examiner gave me points for being at an intersection too long because I was doing a check before I went, any tips?
What if you have a canopy that you cannot see out of from the back, do you have to just use the mirrors or can you not take the test
Hi The man Upstairs - pretend it's not there my friend. In other words, just go through the motions. See this vid: th-cam.com/video/DhSmXu88JRc/w-d-xo.html Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

I have my road test in 2 weeks. Only thing I’m struggling to learn how to do is break smoothly at faster speeds. I break smoothly at speeds of 25 mph or lower but once I drive over 30 mph I struggle to break smoothly honestly I feel bad for my mom cuz she always jerks forwards 😒
@Smart Drive Test
Does the scanning pattern have to be in one sequence?
My first attempt on getting g2(Ontario) wasn’t successful due to one reason. I was told by the instructor to pull over the parking lot because we were done evaluating, but then there was a car in front of me which is also a driver doing park testing and somewhat he hit the pole to the car I was driving. I was just about to release the brakes and pull up the handbrakes but next thing I hear was a small bump. Was it really on my account?
Hi Adrian Nalundasan - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. You've got a great attitude and we're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. It's difficult for me to comment on the situation because I wasn't there; however, if a fixed object or other road user is struck, then unfortunately--in most cases--the exam is over and the student is unsuccessful. It's also the case if the examiner or your driving instructor intervenes in a test. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I took my L but started actually decided to drive before my one year mark. My road test is in November but I’m not sure if it’s enough time to practice for just two months idk
If you practice every day, 2 months should be enough my friend. Where are you taking your test? All the best, Cheers Rick

These are some of the actions she wanted me to perform:
- Blinkers (right,left)
- High lights (front)
- Tap on the brakes (back)

@@smartdrivetest Hey Rick, could you please upload some videos to your channel with differents techniques on "how to back up into a parking space". I got some points taken off on that part of the test because my tail entered the space to my left. My instructor was nice and made me repeat the manouver again, but I feel this is something everybody struggles with. And could you explain what is "possible" to do if you feel like you need to correct yourself during the manouver?
Thanks again for taking your time to read our comments and suggestions.
And no, I don't think I'm going to take any road trips since work and school have my agenda full haha.
Hey Rick you give a lot of good information but sometimes it's to fast could you try to explain a little slower but still like you're videos please I have my test in San Diego on the 23
Hi Carla - couple of things you can do. 1) On the YT settings you can slow down the video; 2) Turn on the closed captions. Also, most of these vids can be found over on the Smart Drive Test website where you may find the test easier: www.smartdrivetest.com/road-test/how-to-observe-to-pass-your-road-test-first-time Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
You do a great job, Rick. Unfortunately, my driving examiner did not like that I was shoulder checking twice before every lateral movement. He thinks the mirrors are enough. Driving examinations can be quite subjective.
Hi Abiodun Aderibigbe - did you pass your test my friend? And where did you take your test? All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest Thanks for taking the time to reply - didnt think you would. No, I failed, Rick - three times now and I put it down to inadequate number of hours behind the wheel. I tested in Connecticut, USA. So, I am trying to get more hours, see more videos, and to continue to test until I pass. 😊
Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempts my friend. That’s a good insight that you need more practice. Have you taken driving lessons with an instructor there in CT? Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest I have had about 12 hours driving lessons and about half that time driving a friend's car. So about 18 in total.

Thank you.

PS - where in the world did you pass your test and are you planning any road trips to celebrate?
I failed the NY road test on my first two attempts, partially because I didn’t move my head. What’s frustrating is that if take my attention off of what’s in front of me then I can lose focus. It’s a very stupid rule. Nevertheless, rules are rules. I’ll follow the advice of this video.
Can you give your comments on the proper hand position for reversing? Some say both hands have to be on the steering wheel while others say one hand on the wheel and the other on the back of the passenger head rest is fine. Please what's the right way to pass the road test.
