Thank very much that you posted this very fine piece. I write my doctoral thesis about Halm. If you like to petform this or other pieces, write me, I have the scores and the parts. Halms String Quartets and his Symphony in A-Major are great too!!!
First question: Do you have the score of his Symphony in A major? Second: since you're studying his works, could you help IMSLP understand if the String Quartet in Bb major uploaded there is really by August Halm and not by Anton Halm, as someone suggested? Thanks!
Of the A major syphony exists only a handwritten copy, although it was recorded in 2004. I can get the score of the symphony and you can decide if its possible. Halm composed three quartets in B Major. One in 1894 (not published), one in 1902/03 (published 1903) and one in the 1920s (published in 1926). I have a record of the B major (1903) and g minor quartets, but I dont think its possible to publish (a quartet member gave me the files a few weeks ago). I will try and fix the imslp issue.
I find pastiches from prior to this century very interesting. I don't know why, but something about people a century ago having an obsession with baroque music to match some modern antique composers is cool to me.
It's not everyday you find a Baroque concerto from the late German Empire. I love romantic neo-Baroque music!
It was composed in August 1914 just when the war startet. The premire was in February 1928 by the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin under Felix Gatz.
Not me clocking the particularly prominent viola line and double-checking the date of composition in _absolute confusion_ lol
There are passages that remind me of Grieg's foray into the neo-baroque in his Holberg Suite. Equally lovely!
