  • Here's the latest part of rebuilding the 70: Soda blasting the frame. it was going to be walnut shell blasting but the media was too coarse for the sand blaster.

So your blasting will help with the “Acid rain” that comes down.
but it would be bad for blueberries raspberry and other acid loving plants.
soda blasting has to be really fine, like most blasting set ups it is a
compressed air pig! uses tons of air but does a great job!

Apparently it kills grass, too. The lawn died around the tarp.

A simple way to do it is by taking a high pressure pressure washer and fill soap tank with anti rust paint remover stuff then spray. I've never done it but I'm sure it would work.

Looks like you really went nuts sandblasting. That same technique is great for cleaning off mold from wood. A little bit more effort on the 70 and you should be about ready to put it back together.

Best/cheapest way to strip the frame would be oven cleaner.(EasyOff yellow can) Then hose it off and reapply till all the paint is gone. With a final dip in some water with baking soda in it to neutralize it.
Also the HF media blaster needs the have the feed hose replaced with a stiffer hose, and needs to be put up, so it gravity feeds. So if you are working on off a table you need just enough hose so the media can't settle in the hose.
Friend had one on a rope the went to a pulley in the ceiling of his "shop". With about 6' of heavy rubber hose on it. Worked fine till he bought an actual good blaster.

“ media blasting” not sand because you are not using a grit of sand. in the unit.
I love the blasting boxes, so there is no exposure to the waste. Also the walnut
media might not be abrasive enough for the paint / rust.

Hi Aaron, I’m new to the channel. Thanks for showing so many of the different aspects of owning and maintaining a miniature railroad. Is there a video that explains the names of your locos? Why is the 18 called the 18? Why is the ES 2-500 called that? Thanks!

The 18 is a box cab, so I numbered it like a Springfield Terminal Railway electric box cab.
ES-2-500 is a locomotive model from Mill Brook Manufacturing. ES stands for Electric Switcher. The 2-500 part of the model number says it has 2 axles and a 500W traction motor.
The design is inspired by the Mr-Motion Shifter, which has been out of production for a number of years, now. Major differences are the size and the suspension. The ES-2-500 is larger in every dimension and it features a fully sprung suspension, as opposed to the Shifter's horizontal pivoting, barely sprung trucks. The electronics and wiring harness are also different.
For some context, the Mill Brook 70 was originally built as a Mr-Motion Shifter. It is being rebuilt as an ES-2-500R, with fully sprung trucks, and ES-2-500 wiring harness and electronics. It'll be smaller than a production ES-2-500, but it will be electrically identical with updated electronics.

Sand blasting media may have been better, had it been in stock. This is what I could get locally.
