What Happened to the Free Cereal Toys From the 90s?

  • I've often wondered what happened to the discontinued cereal toys that landed in our bowls as kids, so I decided to find out.
    Thanks to breakfast memorabilia expert Nick Symes for his knowledge, and access to his vast archive of old cereal adverts. You can check out his impressive collection at: CerealOffers.com, or on his TH-cam channel:

    Great video! Loved the title shot at 4:18. I've always wondered this myself - my favourites were always those temperature-dependent colour-changing spoons!

      Thanks, Chris! I spent a while keying the text into the paper frame by frame and then realised it went too fast to have much of an impact so I appreciate you noticing it, haha. And I remember those spoons as well! There were a few in the batch I bought but I'm not sure if they still work - they're a bit dusty and I wasn't too keen on putting them in any of my dishes...

    ‘And in the end, he learned, that the real prizes were not the cheap plastic toys at the bottom of the box, but the sense of wonder, excitement and pride that accompanied collecting each one.’
    Another great film, m8. Creatively told and full of inventive effects. Top stuff.

    "It's one of those telescopes that make you see less far and worse." :p
    Wonderful video. My brother once got a red kiwi bird that was a 'prize' as part of a laundry detergent promotion. It became a well-loved toy that went on many adventures. My grandmother gave me a toy duck that had once been part of a jewellery promotion (basically, buy a necklace of your choice, and the little velvet bag it comes with is tied to the duck's neck). I still have that duck. I named it Macaroni and he's currently sitting on my bed.

      Thanks, Sanna! And that's such a lovely story. It's funny how random bits of plastic become such memorable pieces of growing up. Give my regards to Macaroni!

      S. Gabriel this is a great video. God knows why cereal box toys popped into my head for no real reason, other than I was thinking about my step daughter when she was about 8 and misled her into believing there was gonna be a toy in the cereal box based on a picture on the back. I had to buy a toy to compensate. I always thought it was extremely cool to not know 'when' the toy would pour out of the cereal box. If anyone can remember those flying saucer Alien toy things, you collected the heads to put in the saucer disk, can't remember whatv cereal box that came from?? Or those Kellogs monster truck things you had to 'send off' for with the coupons. Ahhh the good old days

    As usual, this was wonderful andrew! Cereal toys were a thing before my time, but this really made me understand just what they were all about and what they meant to you. While they don’t come in cereal anymore, i feel these sort of toys are now the kind of things you find in a McDonalds kids meal. So maybe it lives on, just in a different form?
    Cheers,
    Liz

    • @AndrewMadeAFilm
      @AndrewMadeAFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Liz! Did you know about cereal toys beforehand, since they were before your time? I sometimes forget my own age and that this may not be common knowledge. You're right though, McDonalds must still do toys, although I think even they have gotten less exciting over time. Or maybe I'm just remembering the excitement of the toys when I was much younger

    • @theblueskittle71
      @theblueskittle71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrewMadeAFilm I did know about them, only through other youtubers videos and my own parent’s memories sadly, never touched one myself.
      I think I might have to agree with your point of the magic from being a kid having worn off, too. I remember those Fast-Food toys being great fun, but now seeing my younger sister enjoy toys with the same caliber of entertainment as before, I think it’s the childhood perspective that really made these toys magic.

    So wholesome to watch :) Nearly spit out my dinner with the 'twerking King Kong'. I don't remember getting toys from cereals here, but we had flippos in bags of chips. Oof, how I must have messed up my child-arteries eating chips to find that beautiful junk!

    I was big on collecting those prizes out of the cereal boxes throughout the 1980s and '90s, like seriously I was.
    I had always thought those prizes were out of this world but then all the sudden they stopped them. The younger generation of today is missing out on so much stuff we had throughout the 1980s and '90s.
    I'm proud to be a 1980s kid we had it all back then.
