There's always a risk of breaking something when working with hardware but don't be scared! Worst case, you buy it again but normally things are pretty forgiving and breaking something can be a good excuse to learn to fix something. Good luck on your journey!

First step into the Linux World. Welcome! Learning is fun when you realize what you can do with a computer and when you have the control of it by programming the computer. I started using Linux 2012. I think it's the same year as the first raspberry pi came out. I'm glad that I did. So much fun!

The Pi may not be the slickest looking, or the most powerful single board computer you can get. But in terms of support it is easily one of the best single board computers available, and the range of plug in devices for it is phenomenal.....

this is literally how I am and it drives me crazy.
i love the process of the deep dive into learning absolutely everything possible about something and then i imagine all of these huge plans and ideas then spend way too much $$ on stuff... but then it all arrives and when i have everything in hand, i just feel like i dont have the energy or the interest or whatever anymore.
or i will actually finally start something and get like barely into it and then just stop and plan to return and i never do because i find something else that starts the whole process over again

Just a tip: People love it when you include links and details about the hardware/software you are using. If your content is good, people will try to follow along. So it would be helpful for those on the fence to have links or at least detailed descriptions of what you have in case they want to learn with you and your experience. Also, well done! I think you will find there are a lot of us out there who struggle with that difficult first step.

The reason for wanting to learn Python ... is this for controlling the I/O-pins ?
(Personally, I live Javascript a lot better and Javascript is easy to learn if you know any C-like language already).

    • @mb2776
      @mb2776 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@68HC060 I think javascript is harder to learn due to lots of boilerplate code. Python is really easy to learn and great for sciences due to countless library for machine learning and even quantum computing.
I started learning python months ago, build a small MLP neural net and today, I used a quantum simular to put a qubit into superposition, entangle it with another one and then measure both. All in Python code with qiskit and qiskit-aer

    Welcome tom the club!
Since it's a Linux box, you can put SSH on it, boot it up headless, and put the Pi on your "{electronics workbench", controlling it from your PC. That way, you don't need to find space for the extra monitor, keyboard, etc.
Without all those peripherals, you can do project on something like a cafeteria tray, so you can get them out of the way when you have company that won't get excited when you show off what you['ve been doing 😎

Good for you and yes everyone starts like this at some point. As you said, its better to just dig in and try, do it. Love playing with the raspberry pi for so many projects.

Some other fun toys, can be things like an Arduino or ESP32... I have a project that I made with an Arduino, 128x64 LCD, an analog joystick, and speaker that recreates some of the old arcade games from the 70s, like Missile Command, Breakout, and Snake. The components are pretty easy to wire together, and there's a graphics library for the Arduino that lets you interface with those little green LCD screens (and probably a lot of other ones).

I really loved your *real* timelapse of showing the hard work it goes into learning *AND* trying along the way!
The temporary LED flashing is not cringe at all either!
I share your sentiment about over-researching and not actually trying things out, so adopting the "just do it" mentality is a solid advice!
And you rightfully have a worry whether something will just not work when u plug it in or something will burn out or u get shocked, if u r working with non-microelectronics.
It was just like that, when I was learning, except I was 6 years old and a personal computers had 1Kilobyte of RAM.
A Raspberry Pi would be been considered a super computer X-D
I did embedded programming until I was maybe ~20 years old and the uncertainty of what will happen, when I plug the re-flashed electronics in never really went away, so I pivoted to be a sysadmin for 7years, before I came back to non-embedded programming :)

Btw, this kind of procrastination is one of the ADHD symptoms, so I highly recommend looking into whether u have ADHD and what can you do about managing it.
For me, taking 2x10mg Ritalin for a month, then 56mg Concerta for a few years made wonders!
After 8 years I tapered it down to 36mg & for the past 6 years I'm just taking 27mg Concerta, always during weekdays only.
I did have to stop for a few months recently, because I had 120+bpm resting hear rate for uncertain reasons (but mostly because of being over-weight).

The plastic piece in the connector is there so the pick and place machine can use suction to pick the connector up and place in the board for assembly. At least it looks like that might be what it is there for. Also need utmost caution when plugging into it, the pins are very thin and fragile compared to the other header pins on the board.
I've made no progress with my PI5, just plug it in once in a while.

03:56 Open up the case of your mac book and count the boards: Yes that too is a "single board computer", and coincidentally it even uses the same CPU architecture as the Raspberry-Pi. The actual difference is that the RPi is stripped down to the bare necessities (no display, keyboard, speaker, microphone) and you have ready access to the fun bits (GPIO) so you can interface with the real world without buying another piece of hardware.
    BTW, good job.

Funny video, but glad that you did this as it might be an inspiration for others to begin tinkering with new things. We have all been beginners and I think that you should not try to rush away but maybe have a goal for a project that is reasonable hard. Brake it down into smaller parts and do documentation on what you did and how as you might be forced to start from beginning with some parts. I know by my own experience that it is easy to buy stuff but much harder to find time and sit down and focus on one thing. I think you should do a blog for your time at the pi.
Looking forward to watch your next video.

When I studied mech.eng and then astronautics it was because I wanted to learn engineering and robotics and space. Then you get a job and all they want you to do is sit behind a computer day in and day out doing the same thing until you go mad, indoctrinating you into believing you can't continue to grow and learn other areas of engineering and science, that you're not skilled enough, smart enough. The overthinking thing it's establishment conditioning, I have it too, you're fighting it which is a good thing.
I bought the AI hat for my PI5, camera, wheels, motor driver and a battery as a Christmas present, I'm just going to learn it myself at my own rate, there's so much help and people willing to give advice on forums and I'm not afraid to fail, failure is leaning.

If you want a recommendation for an easy to use starter distro for desktop use, then I'd go with Linux Mint. It's one of the easiest to use distros and yet it's still fully capable. It's also what I setup for my parents to use and they've informed me that they've had no problems with it for the past 6 months that it's been installed.

The RPi changed my life, that is until the RPi Pico came along. And then I got hooked on MCUs as a class of computing. The ESP32 is my processor of choice these days. I grew up close to the hardware in the late 1970s, so these low spec processors are just my cup of tea. I spent from the mid-1990s until 2019 working with server class hardware in huge datacenters. Now I keep an MCU in my wallet at all times. 🙂

I see you have removed the Pi 5 from its case to attach things. Here is a tip that might help: if you use the official cooler, the Pi no longer fits in the case... except if you remove the clear part that has the fan on it, then it does and the cooler still works. Also, if you are going to be using the Pi for projects that need interaction with the GPIOs, maybe consider the official "bumper". It is a little rubber tray that attached to the Pi (easy to remove and attach). It means the Pi won't scratch your desk and won't skid around - also gives you something to grab hold of that isn't circuitboard. (It also has the benefit of being dirt cheap)
    Anyway, welcome to the party!

First things first DO NOT use the raspberry pi case. not good venting for heat. It will work but youre better off just running it naked with a fan and heatsink and it will be more then fine. But I like the look of the Pi and its internals
