    That transmission whine brings back memories. Grandpa bought a repossessed 770 in 1960, he farmed with it until 2016, then I farmed with it for 2years. I spent 16years around that tractor and miss it every day.

    I grew up with a '49 88. One my uncles had a 55 and a 57 Super 88's I got to drive one of them one year with a rotary hoe. In '65 the same uncle bought a new 1850 and a 6 bottom plow. In '67 he bought another one. In the spring of '67 his Dad and I run both of them plowing fields. It was my first time running a big tractor. I run the 1965 tricycle and his dad run the '67 wide front end one. It didn't take long to do 20 acres. My brother still runs the '49 88.

      My dad had a 66 gas and a 77 diesel. We helped our neighbor who had a Farmall H and M. My uncle liked JDs and had As. I will still put the Oliver up against any of those other two brands. I finally liked JD when my uncle bought a 4020 power shift. That was a nice tractor, but just not an Oliver.

    Many years ago my dad bought one at a farm sale. It was located several miles from our home. As a 14 year old, I volunteered to drive it home. After three hours, it was not as much fun as I thought it would be. Plus it had the slow rear end so it wasn't very fast on the road. That was the first of many hours behind the wheel.

      TH-cam can be weird on notifications. I guess it depends on how busy the system is, and how bad Krone wants you to buy something. I watch quite a few forage harvesting videos, I wonder if that effects what kind of ads will be shown on my channel.

    My father had a 1655 oliver with a loader back in the early 80's thru 91 or 92 when he sold it because he got out of the beef cattle business. Man i wish i could find the where abouts of that tractor today, had 3200 hrs on it when he sold it. But was always a reliable tractor ! He also had a 1365 oliver with a Fiat engine in it which i found running yet today !!

    Have you ever tried those electronic ignition kits for those old tractors. I put one on my old WD 45 and it never ran this good. Have put several more on for neighbors only seen one go bad guy left the key on over night overheated it. If the distributor bushings are loose it will run better than the points system. You said you worry about electrical controller availability there are places that repair those. Thanks for the great videos Chris.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried electronic ignition, but I've heard good things until lately. Sounds like the quality has gone down and the new ones aren't lasting. Of course I'm having the same problem with condensers, they can be bad right out of the box. I do have an electronic set in a holley I took out of my 2-70 that I can try out.

I mess around on my property and tiny hobby farm with a '61 Oliver 550. Dreaming of expanding a little bit someday. All I want is a couple acres of tillable ground! My plowing is done wayyyy too fast haha.

    I tried the "comet wash" on both the 1755 (before I sold it) and 1855, and 1000grit wet-sanding. There was just no recovering the paint on either. And both had had some other paint thrown on them before at some time. However, the 1800A I had buffed out great! The new owner of it did end up painting it, but probably could have gotten away with just new decals. That 88 sounds great! There's a few places around that had houses on them that got buried and farmed over, but they really don't perform well for crops. I'm sure the cattle helped out that dirt quite a bit! Awesome video! Thanks for sharing!

    I finally got caught up on watching your last two videos. Its great how you add the back stories on not just the tractors but on your family and farm. Its got to be tough sometime being a one man show, like when you have to run the tractor and wagons back to the farm and want to get the combine back also. Do you do a lot of walking? LOL

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do get to do some walking, and sometimes it's faster. If I can walk it in 10-15 minutes, I'm probably going to make it faster than if I ask a family member to give me a ride. If we get talking, next thing you know a half hour is gone.

      Also, I just got to thinkin, on Your Super 88, do you have to use a lead additive?
      I had an 1963 220 Gas Mercedes Benz and would have to use an additive.
      Just Wondering
      Thanx

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use any lead additive or substitute. I do run premium gas in my tractors, but that's as much for the fact that it doesn't go bad nearly as fast as the cheap stuff, and they just run better on it.

    My 57 super 88 doesn't have that style cover over the battery? It did have the bracket where the tach was.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Early 57 models still had the flip up battery cover. It was around February of 57 when they changed the cover. Oliver's model year at that time began on November 1st, so there were '57 models built in calendar year '56. Some of those even had green wheels instead of red. The decision to switch back to red wheels was implemented Jan 1, 1957. Any tractors still at the factory were pulled back in to get the wheels repainted, but anything already shipped out prior to the 1st still had green wheels.

    Quick question, how hard is it to fix the PTO brake on a white 2-105? Thanks

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to pull the long shaft that goes to the engine, then remove the PTO unit. (don't forger to drain the oil) You'll need a small cherry picker type hoist to lift it. After that, there is a special tool to compress a spring while you take a snap ring out. The rest is regular tools and fairly straight forward.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the most part, it's just me. I do have some friends that help in the fall here and there. The White pulling the wagons has a computer controlled transmission, and it's really nice to drive, but I worry about the availability of electronic parts. I hear some are already obsolete. I know some excellent machinists that could make parts, but I don't know anyone that could make a new computer for it.

    Could the Super 88 move the wheat faster than the Super 77? or was the auger setup tapped out? Thanks.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the Super 88 was able to move more wheat. I had the auger maxed a couple times with the Super 77, but the rpms dropped more than the Super 88. If it was at one of the taller bins, then the difference would have shown up more. I don't think the Super 77 could have started the auger back up after shearing the bolt like the Super 88 did.

    I wanna know more about the green white.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an American 80. In the late 80s, White decided to make two tractor models, the 60 using the transmission from the Oliver 1555, and the 80 from the Oliver 1655. Both tractors were powered by a Cummins 4B engine, the 60 was naturally aspirated, the 80 was turbo charged. They called them the American series, because at that time, they were the only tractors under 100 HP made in the USA. They also had color options, White Silver, Oliver Green, Minneapolis Moline Yellow, and Cockshutt Red. Silver and green were the most popular choices, yellow and red ones are quite hard to find.
