the one thing that makes Saw a worthwhile series is how insane its call backs and continuity is. If your saw movie isn't bringing in some guy from the 3rd movie to actually be the killer because he survived being stung by 1000 wasps, then get outta here
I want to hear that musical motif, then see Jigsaw come back from the dead - and the only explanation is a tossed-off, droll whisper of "Death is a trap and I escaped"
The vast majority of the time, I think piecing together the story as you go is a bad idea. I'm not sure it isn't with Saw, but they do it well enough, for a series that is relatively well-suited for it (it's not intended to be taken *too* seriously), that it works [well enough for me]. I'm taken aback by people who don't like it; I mean, it's far from great, but it's good enough for a pulpy, schlocky horror series, right?
I guessed the villain so early I said to myself 'It can't be that's too obvious they have to subvert it somehow'. Only to discover no the twist is exactly what you assume it is.
For me, Spiral had such a weird tonal whiplash throughout, where it doesn't seem to want to take itself seriously with its frequent wisecracking and distractingly goofy bits like the execution of flashbacks to younger Chris Rock and Samuel L Jackson, contrasted with the drawn-out, graphic torture scenes and discussions on police brutality and institutional bigotry that are horrendously muddled to put it lightly.
It feels like an attempt to make this sleazy series "Respectable" having a fight to the death with a boring police procedural that woefully misunderstands its own messaging - while a Chris Rock heckles them from the sidelines with deleted material he wouldn't even toss off as a tweet
Like "Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes". Great fucking game - well, as a demo for "The Phantom Pain", it is; so long as your expectations are calibrated properly. The gameplay is phenomenal, the story is... uneven. I love both sides to it, but they just don't fit together.
Really proud of the editing on this one if I do say so myself, thank you for being so kind. I did get the urge to put an enormous amount of throwaway dumb shit into it
Sort of unrelated, but every time I watch a video about the Saw franchise, I just remember being in the audience for a creator Q&A for Repo! The Genetic Opera where Darren Lynn Bousman revealed that he originally wanted to direct musicals when he became a film director…
@@inframeout It’s definitely a strange film in some aspects and I chalk a lot of that up to production (alleged studio interference with editing, budget was so low that Paris Hilton literally provided her own wardrobe for costumes), but it’s honestly a super fun musical that was weirdly ahead of it’s time in some ways and it’s honestly one of the best performances of Tony Head’s career.
@@inframeout Oh my gods, please do. If you end up making anything about it, I would scream with glee. You don't have to - but by god it would be a 1%'er that would make a lot of old goth kids happy.
@@PaxPirate I might have to take a look at it for Halloween (providing someone hasn't already done a thorough analysis of their own that would make mine irrelevant). I'm already working on a video about the very rubbish "Queen Of The Damned" for all my fellow goths.
I wound up hating it and ranking it the lowest. Not only was it incredibly simple and stupid, but I couldn't get over how lazy it felt. People not putting in the effort is one of those filmmaking sins I just can't ever get over. Even if there are "worse" movies in the franchise, you can tell it's not for a lack of trying. For the grain of salt, I'm one of those people who ranks 4 as the highest sequel. Maybe it's just because it felt the most like the first after how over the top 2 and 3 got. I also admit it's partially because of the better-than-the-actual-movie revival song from X Japan.
You know - until my most recent full rewatch of the series (I've now seen every entry between four and eight times each) - I always remembered "Saw IV" as one of my least favourites... ...but you're totally right. It is far better than I remembered, I like how it makes the protagonist complicit in the crimes in its own twisted way, and I think the editing is probably the series best.
The funny thing about this video title is that I couldn't tell at first whether it referred to Spiral: From The Book of Saw," or the gay indie horror "Spiral" (which was ALSO a disappointing mess.)
It's always disappointing to see a film lick the boot of a great idea, only to miss it completely. Though I also find it in a weird way, exiting. Like when I was watching angle has fallen, which is not a good film. I was caught off guard, when the third act moves to a hospital and our main character is forced to survive against a much better armed group, with the help of a quickly falling number of allies, and smart tactics. The only thing I was thinking at the time was, why isn't this the whole movie. And then I started writing in my head what that would look like. I guess what I trying to say is that even a film or book or what ever falls to reach it's full potential, that just leaves more room for the next person not to make the same mistake and or capture what would have made the previous work a classic.
I know it’s been 2 years and you don’t care anymore but angel has fallen and the whole has fallen series and what’s his names films in general are like classic b films, they are dumb and fun, Geostorn is my favourite of what’s his name. Proper stupid but lean into it films
@@SayWhatNow666 I kinda wished we had more dumb fun movies. It’s sad cause those types of film’s are where directors used to cut their teeth and learn the craft. Which I feel kinda helps explain why movies are the way they are now. Long story short. Plane was cool
Completely agree. My only issue with the first "Cube" is the incredibly wonky acting from some of the cast. "Hypercube" just feels like a cynical sequel with awful CGI. "Cube Zero" definitely has its moment (and I really liked the prototype production design on the rustic Cube) - even if the story didn't really satisfy me
Oh god yes. I think that even the worst "Saw" film has some flare and some interesting ideas. As for "Wrong Turn" - the vast majority of those films are irredeemable garbage
@@inframeout maybe consider makin a vid someday ;) its certainly a hidden gem and besides geralds game the best netflix can offer in regards of "good" horror
I wouldn't say so because - regardless of what you think of TLJ - it took a bunch of big swings, tried something with its whole entire being and had a defined intention behind its divisive plotting. "Spiral" is just "What if we threw away all the trashy stuff people like about 'Saw', and then make some insanely ill advised allusions to police brutality in between boring scenes of people sat at desks?"
At that point I was just so shocked that the film cut to credits with the abruptness and complete lack of flow that felt like the editor just threw his hands in the air and said "Well! There's no saving this one folks!"
Hot take but I feel unless its outright satire its hard to make meaningful meta stabs at the problems that face institutions IRL mainly because of the 2016 election and how ideologue politics in some way shape or form has influenced alot of forms of media, especially within newer projects, im in no way implying anything reactionary with the rhetoric but I feel this whole plot about the police would've hit harder say if George Floyd wasn't killed for example.

Lol I for one am shocked 2 is your least favorite
I also think 2 is pretty bad, but the editing choices in Saw III make it the worst for me. Great ranking though!
@Nero Wynn 2 is my favourite!
My ranking would be Saw 1 is a solid A+ movie. Absolutely loved it and then everything else is equally bad.
Very pleased to see Saw V so high! It might actually be my favorite of the franchise tbh

It's comically obvious from the moment he walks on screen
This movie comes of as a film cashing in on the success of Se7en in the late 90s more than the original Saw ever did.

I haven't seen the movie, but when you brought up Chris Rock's partner, I immediately said to myself, "I bet he's the killer," and I was right lmao
You're kidding?! I called the killer from the trailer and it was called too obvious by other commentators! 😂
It is so obvious, I turned to my partner after his second line of dialogue and just said "Goddamit that guy definitely did it"
I chuckled at Rock's "serious" face. Not seen it yet but I'll give it an, ahem, spin.
