Very informative; being quite new to mixing/mastering I learned a lot about the diffferent compressor types and their way to use them. 👍👍👏👏

Point of interest- Instagram filters are visual compressors. They do the exact same thing with the range of light. Sometimes I want to draw a picture which looks good but I realise I've been given an Instagram version. It makes it hard to get the shading in the face right. It's really hard actually, I HATE drawing from filtered photos.

Hi nice video! I am thinking on get a versatile compressor for my 500 lunchbox, that allows me to compress the signal when I am recording. I want it to be versatile so is usefull for vocals, instruments and drums. I am thinking in a FET.Can I ask you, in your opinion, what is the most versatile comp when recording different sources?

Something for all of those sound sources, you're probably wanting an 1176 type compressor. There are lots of them available in 500 series format, and there are some DIY kits too, like the CP5176 www.soundskulptor.com/en/proddetail.php?prod=CP5176

You forgot to add that compressors are like crack. In the time I've been putting together my home studio in the past year and a half, I've bought five of the buggers and I plan on building a few as well. They become an addiction, as do microphones.

Hahahaha you're 100% right. Analog comps sound sound so good. I'm building more right now and have at least a couple more I'm coveting for sure.
What are your favourite go to comps in your studio?

@@diyrecordingstudio My two current favourites are the Lin2A and Lin76, Lindell Audio's LA-2A and 1176 clones. I like the 76 for slamming the drum room mic which give a nice BIG sound when mixed in with the rest of the kit. The 2A is nice as it sounds great on practically anything and you just can't screw things up with it. Both are great value too as I can't justify the cost of real ones for something that's a hobby. Beyond a certain point there's diminishing returns. Now I'm going into DIY so I can get nice gear for less money. Your videos definitely prove that.
