Great stuff. Leo Africanus states that the West African book trade was the most important source of wealth in the imperial days...why whenever I read about Ghana, Mali, and Songhai (from European authors) they say that the most important trade items were gold and slaves???
Things that make you go 'hmmm'...

I met Robin Walker at a talk he gave in Manchester on Songhai and after its fall the slave trade he's decent, humble guy and he knows his stuff a valuable asset in a country that got its wealth from slavery. In my opinion Musa made a big mistake bringing all that gold with those savages there he turned his land into a target, how many rich countries do we know who doesn't have powerful military to protect their riches?
