  • This is the older elevator in Weil Hall at the University of Florida (UF). This building houses the Engineering Industries Department, which is a subset of the larger Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. In this building are many of the Civil Engineering laboratories, such as the Highway Materials Lab and Structural Analysis. You can see a giant canoe made out of CONCRETE, constructed through a competition by ASCE (more info: www.essie.ufl.....
There are two elevators in this building. The other elevator (not featured) is a Kone hydraulic elevator. This elevator is the one (almost) original to the building. It is a relay-controlled Otis geared traction unit from 1962, with the only upgrades being the cab interior and the buttons (with EPCO SSL). Outside of that, pretty much everything else is completely original (doors, motor, controller, generator / AC power supply, etc.). A very friendly TKE technician showed me the machine room of this masterpiece of engineering!
Unfortunately, I don't know how much longer this thing will last. Some of its equipment is really starting to show age (i.e. motor bearings, door timer, etc.). It would be kind-of cool if preserving this thing became an engineering project for some of the classes here.
Unlike previous videos, this elevator IS open to the public (except for the machine room, obviously).👀
If you couldn't tell already, UF is a total gold mine when it comes to cool elevators! I got a lot more from here coming in the next few weeks.
