    Nice video. I never thought to do this when I had to do a worm bin rescue. It had gone all muddy and the worms could hardly move through it. Had to go through all the mud and gently pull out all of the worms. Took me ages!!

    Well she is a tough woman.I can hear all those mosquitos buzzing around...I think for a small scale starting out where you want to get the most out of your bins, this is a cool idea . But as you grow larger this method would be to time consuming . Cost wise it is kind of expensive. May be you can take to bottoms out of a couple buckets and screen the bottoms with screen .

    what kind of shredder do you use for your cardboard?

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same shredder in my Amazon links. An alternative is to find an 18 or more sheet shredder. They need to maintained more than if you just used it for paper like normal. The head needs to be disassembled every couple months and cleaned out or the dust will get in and make it over heat. I learned that the hard way.

    You just let those worms release back into the wild!!! LOL there had to be some cocoons fly away when you slung those strainers and banged them on the tub. Guess you forgot to add their trackers too?
    Hostas eat springtails!!! I better keep our babies out of the flower bed. And is that why you didn't use any trackers? the Hosta will eat newly released cocoons? like those springtails!!! LOL
    and did we find any gold yet??? looks like you have found a chicken egg though.

    Very interesting. I have previously given some thought about how to harvest castings with water but it was more driven to reconstituting casting material separated from the water.
    Are you on well water or is it chlorinated city water? PH balanced? Temperature?
    If it is city water, you are killing off enzymes and bacteria, some of the best attributes of worm castings and creating a less hospitable environment for the worms.
    I appreciate people who just try ideas. I am much more a thinker and I will negate trying something by talking myself out of it, usually out of the presumption of something better. Your demonstration shown me that the concept of water harvesting is sound if one is content with the amount of liquid to be utilized, somewhat immediately. If the mixture is not oxygenated, it will putrefy anaerobically over a short period of time.
    Alternatively, you could add a teaspoon of molasses per 5 gallons of liquid when aerating which will create a biological explosion, doubling the bacteria every hour in good conditions. "worm tea" for more info.
    Is the material that is not making it through the fine mesh Coco Coir and/or other bedding?
    Can we assume it is since worm castings are purported as 100% humus?

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is city water. So yes chlorinated. Temperature in the summer is about 70 Fahrenheit. The kill vs concentration for chlorine is about 200 ppm 5 minutes. There is less than 5 ppm in tap water. Also since I used it immediately the water additives were mitigated by the soil. If I made brewed worm tea like in my past videos I use water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloranimines. Also the molasses and bubble over night. The left over matter is likely cococoir and paper. If I had used more coir in the begining it would not have ended up so mucky.

    • @dizzydinonysius
      @dizzydinonysius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PlantObsessed I think I will revisit the "water harvesting" method, at least for making worm tea. Thanks!

      @@PlantObsessed Sorry but my brain just wouldn't let this go.
      "A chlorine concentration of 50 to 200 parts per million (ppm) is recommended to sanitize food contact surfaces including utensils, equipment, and tables."
      www.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/food-safety/at-the-food-processor/print,use-of-chlorine.html
      I have not had an aquarium for several years and I had a significant brain injury since then, so I had to refresh myself.
      "Chlorine at high concentrations is toxic to fish; at lower concentrations, it stresses fish by damaging their gills. Concentrations of as little as .2-.3 ppm kill most fish fairly rapidly. To prevent stress, concentrations as low as 0.003 ppm may be required." users.cs.duke.edu/~narten/faq/water-treatment.html
      Your worms are likely not suffering much since they are a more complex and larger life form and only being submerged for a moment however, I wonder what percentage of life from the castings live on in tap water.
      Side note:
      The smell from cleaning my aquariums smells the same as my finished worm tea. I am curious if there is any correlation in biology.
