Buzz would be in the surface level, Riff Gods imo lol. Im more of a fan of rhythm based guitarists who focus on writing and composing killer riffs and could care less about lightning speed shredding guitar solos.. like Buzz, Tony Iommi, and Matt Pike from Sleep, and High On Fire. The guitarist in doom metal and Stoner rock bands are some of the most underrated guitarists who write awesome guitar riffs.
Melvins were a monumental band in terms of influence and impact on musical history, and even commercially they opened for big bands playing stadiums and sold probably half a million on a major label which isn’t bad.
One of the most influential guitarists ever...he was one of those who started the grunge movement or genre, and was one of the pioneers of the Sludge Metal genre. He may not be the best known guitarist, but everyone who heard his riffs started a band and for those who already had it, they were certainly influenced. A legend and a Riff Lord in my book for sure. A true Punk and a true Freak \m/ \m/

Buzz is such a humble guy. He pretty much invented sludge / doom / stoner types of metal. Night Goat's main riff has been stolen and recycled by so many bands that it is insane. The Melvins may never get into the RNR Hall of Fame but who gives a shit.
At least Kurt threw them a bone in the nirvana unplugged album. A lot of people I know never heard of the Melvins until they got nirvana unplugged, and most of them got interested enough to look em up and buy their albums and concert tickets.
He may not be as much of a household name as James Hetfield, but Buzz has certainly been one of the most influential guitarists in metal. Tons of players took cues from the frizzy haired one.

I remember hearing about them back in the early 90's because of the Cobain/ Nirvana connection, it seemed like people were trying to lump them in with a sound or an idea. When I heard them I was pleasantly THRILLED to come across a band so heavy and unique. Thanks for this episode Gibson, this series is kicking ass.
All I remembered from back then was the drummer had some crazy hard material. I now wish I’d been listening to them this whole time. This video is amazing

At the start of this video I was like UGH this tone! By the end I was like, HOLY SH*T THIS TONE!!! I don't think that's ever happened to me before. Absolutely brutal riffs.
I experienced something similar. His tone sounded... Boxy? Homogenized? It was like my ear had to tune itself to that guitar tone by way of hearing his riffs.. which made the tone just what it needed to be... Which is now a tone I want to chase for myself. Mmm! Creamy fuzzy squelchy sunshine to my soul, 'tis.
Buzzo is a legend. We wouldn’t have bands like soundgarden, nirvana, mastodon, Dillinger Espcape plan, etc if it weren’t for this quirky but fearless awesome artist. Long live king buzzo. Long live the Melvins!!
Buzz is the Riff King of Riff Kings. Love Tony Iommi, but he doesn't have a quarter of the cool riffs that Buzz has. He and Dale Crover (monster drummer) are the best team there's ever been. It's an absolute travesty that they aren't in the R&R HOF.

Buzz is the perfect example of you don't need to go to Berkeley School of Music or the Royal Academy of Music to learn how to play and paying a pretty fortune in the process for something you're probably not being shown how to think outside of the box, just go by the "rules"... Yeah, nah... Sod all that. Just detune, get some odd pedals, plug into a Model T and a GT120, couple of 4x12s and go all Darth Vadar on a distant planet.
As a guy who never took lessons but used to jam with some familiar names I absolutely love the spirit and "theory" of Buzz's style. In a nutshell it's "I don't know why. It just f'ing sounds right" 😆 Finally, a theory I comprehend perfectly.
I think I said last time Gibson's killing it with these episodes. Of course you got the shred masters but seeing Larry from Primus and Buzz really show excellent taste
I've been trying to learn guitar for years, and King Buzzo is the first musician I can actually respect and understand, AND feel like he understands my taste in weird, discordant chords. It's so nice to have a kickass guitar teacher with real world experience who isn't condescending, cocky or boring.

The Honey Bucket riff is so awesome, one of my all time favourite songs and to hear Buzz wrote it in 15 minutes is crazy. What a fucken legend. The Melvins really are one of the most under rated bands

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the Melvins many of times throughout their career and my career. I was in a fellow Seattle band called the Mentors and When I lived in San Francisco was the time they were living in San Francisco so I’ve got to see them in the rehearsal studios and I’m also from Bakersfield and they played here with a total of 10 people in the audience and they still put on a great show. He’s a very influential guitar player and I think the Melvins should be a lot bigger than they are. I’m also a big KISS fan and I always loved how they always tip their hat to them. Bravo Gibson for having Buzz on one of your videos on your channel.
Were you in the El Duce Tapes? I saw a newer incarnation of the Mentors at the Funhouse here in Seattle about 8 years ago. Pretty fun, bought a couple CD's, talked to one of the guitarists (Sicky's nephew)..
This is probably the first time I’ve seen Buzz holding a Gibson since 2010. Glad he hasn’t fully given them em up for the EGC although it seems he prefers them live because of their weight.
I love Buzz's dissonance. He is the king of dissonance in my opinion. I got a chance to see the Melvins live in Seattle at the Moore Theater back in the early 90's back when Buzz was still rocking the black hair.

I saw them at this roadhouse bar in Orangevale, CA during the Big Melvins days and the stage area was a 3 walled box basically. The amount of sound coming from them was causing my eyeballs to vibrate in my head distorting my vision.

@@mudfly3 absolutely, joeys got a coupla dozen great wonky n primitive but melodic n catchy guitar parts amongst the Pixies canon, well worth investigating man . He’s one of the great character guitar players
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the Melvins many of times throughout their career and my career. I was in a fellow Seattle band called the Mentors and When I lived in San Francisco was the time they were living in San Francisco so I’ve got to see them in the rehearsal studios and I’m also from Bakersfield and they played here with a total of 10 people in the audience and they still put on a great show. He’s a very influential guitar player and I think the Melvins should be a lot bigger than they are.
I’m also a big KISS fan and I always loved how they always tip their hat to them.

I saw a newer incarnation of the Mentors at the Funhouse here in Seattle about 8 years ago. Pretty fun, bought a couple CD's, talked to one of the guitarists (Sicky's nephew)..

This is probably the first time I’ve seen Buzz holding a Gibson since 2010. Glad he hasn’t fully given them em up for the EGC although it seems he prefers them live because of their weight.
I love Buzz's dissonance. He is the king of dissonance in my opinion. I got a chance to see the Melvins live in Seattle at the Moore Theater back in the early 90's back when Buzz was still rocking the black hair.

Great job. Buzz is an incredible innovator, the Lysol record is transcendental, tonally his unique, warped brand of HEAVY couldn't come from another instrument.

I saw this video yesterday and I have played it repeatedly since then. I love the riffs and the dirty tones he gets are mind blowing. No wonder so many people reference his music. Buzz is funny and real. I love it!

One of the loudest bands I've heard live..
I saw them at this roadhouse bar in Orangevale, CA during the Big Melvins days and the stage area was a 3 walled box basically. The amount of sound coming from them was causing my eyeballs to vibrate in my head distorting my vision.

WHen I first saw the melvins live in the 1990s , my organs swam inside my body it was so loud. I thought something broke inside my stomach.
@@nickfanzo whoa! I thought the time I saw Hank Williams the 3rd was loud, when I set my half drank beer down on the stage, it was shooting air up out of the bottle! My ears rang for two days, but I didnt quite get to 'organs swimming' levels of ounishment

Buzz used to come into Whole Foods in Sherman Oaks CA all the time when I worked there. Only ever saw him in front of the non dairy ice cream section of the frozen aisle.
Makes sense as he lives in Laurel Canyon.
He was on a non dairy kick for a while.
