THE CHIMERA CLASH | First Time Watching Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 4 Reaction

  • The Chimera Clash. Oh boy was there so much to unpack in this episode, and just when I felt it was getting started, it ended! I'm really enjoying the story of Percy Jackson, and really had a good time finally seeing Annabeth given more screentime to develop her character. I'm blown away by how all of the foundations of a kid story are there, and yet, there is so much universal humanity in place that the story really serves everyone of all ages. I'm quite impressed! I hope you enjoy this reaction to Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 4!

I'm glad that the characters' thoughts and personalities are coming through to you as someone new to the series! The books use first person narration from Percy, and that massively shapes the reader's perspective of the story. I can imagine one of the bigger hurdles for the writing team on the show was to translate his thought process to this format.
I've been a fan of this franchise for over a decade, so I love seeing fresh perspectives on it, and I'm glad you enjoy it so far!

I didn't know about the first person POV. That's pretty amazing actually. I would actually think maybe it would be a bit of a challenge to adapt to a script for everyone...except for Percy (Walker). Haha.
I do think in the first 4 episodes, they've done an incredible job bringing those internal conflicts forward. Annabeth was certainly a standout this episode! I love how her personal story is inferred by the myth of Athena, while still being distinctly a human story of a childhood that soured.
Thank you for checking out the reaction and taking the time to share your thoughts!

This is incredibly too kind! I like how instantly relatable Percy Jackson is, even though, for me, I relate mkre to his sarcastic nature and use of situational humor.
So settling in to enjoy the adventure for me was, admittedly, a fairly easy sell. What I didn't count on was the depth and emotional honesty along the way. An aspect of this story that I think speaks volumes to so many readers and enjoyed of Rick Riordan's world, and I can't help but feel that is the soul of the experience that has compelled so many. It is in a very real sense, the manifestation of that saying, "Extraordinary is ordinary people put in extra-ordinary circumstances."
I can't help but feel like this story demonstrates this best in this episode, opening with a fear to leave the wall in swimming lessons. I've been there. Even if it wasn't that, ost can relate to leaving the safety of the "known" to enter the "unknown."
It's a very real human element that is playing out in my life, too, as I finally "leave the wall" and embrace this story!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. This is my favorite aspect of the TH-cam part of reactions! (That and making the thumbnails!)

Not sure if someone has already said this, but humans don't notice Grover's horns because of the mist, which was mentioned in episode 1. It hides the mythical world from the human worls. It is the same reason the humans saw the chimera as a chihuahua!

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

You're right. I feel like I knew that, but I was pretty tired when I sat down to record this. But I also know in the scene with the furies that they visually identified the creatures with obscured by the mist and not.
So when Grover is just casually chatting it up with a police officer with horns out that struck me as kind of silly, because we never got the pov of what the officer would have seen.
      It's a good reminder though!

It’s never too late to go back and read the books! You didn’t rob yourself of anything, the author is still putting out new entries in this franchise even now - that’s like 20 (or close to it) years of this franchise and material being out there, and the reason it’s still getting new stuff? Because new people are finding it. Every single person starts their own personal journey with this series in their own way, at their own time. You havn’t missed out on anything because it’s still going on, you only rob yourself of the experience if you never give yourself the chance to get into it, but as long as you give yourself that chance than there’s no such thing as too late. If anything, this is the PERFECT time to go back and experience the books for the first time because it’ll fill that Percy Jackson void for you while you wait for season 2 (if it happens, god willing lol), and with your TH-cam channel you can also use that new journey for content, you can make book/chapter reviews and deep dives, and all that stuff. You didn’t rob yourself of anything my guy, you just gifted yourself an amazing opportunity.
Sorry for the long reply 😂

I really appreciate this comment. If there is one thing moving away from 1000 gaming videos to doing reactions has taught me, is that everything you said is right. The timing is always right to take a personal journey with a great story.
But the best part of the TH-cam side of things is meeting all the members of these stories' respective communities and letting their passion and energy for their favorite things transfer onto me.
At the end of the video, I laid out an idea that I would for sure read the first book after finishing this season and waiting for season 2, as well as some interviews with Rick Riordan.
Thank you for the long comment. As you could probably tell from the video, I'm pretty chatty, too!
But more importantly, thank you for taking YOUR time to be part of my personal journey both as a new reactor and as a new fan of the Percy Jackson universe!

Time for my few comments of the video
    1. There is something to be said about a story when the only real issue the bugged me is how short it is. This episode is 10 minutes shorter than the last one. While this week alone it hurts, I think a month down the road, once we have the full story, we won't care anymore, because as of right now, it's just "we want more" and next episode may have that. It's hard to know what they have planned, if you start the next episode in this one, it may not flow well
    2. A significant book change- when Riordan initially wrote the book, he actually didnt research the St Louis arch too in depth, so when he wrote the book, he actually thought the river was directly under the arch, therefore Percy would effortlessly fall in. However after learning the water isn't actually directly under it, he had to brainstorm a new way for him to end up in the water, getting us to where we are now.
These next 2 are from me scrolling youtube reccomended and finding a couple interviews.
    - In an interview with Riordan, he said that if he had to pick an episode as his favorite, its episode 5, so ooooooh boy here we go. Hopefully he isn't wrong.
    - Slightly dumb, but I found funny, Walker said in an interview that for the scenes where he looked deathly pale, its actually just his normal face, no makeup (minus the bloodshot eyes)

Take the mythical creature's message about Posidon "being proud" as through a rose tinted lense. She works for and lives for Posidon she is a bit biased. The "being proud" could be him acknowledging Percy's selfless act of heroism in that moment.
Much like Athena he can be just as fickle. He is just harder to pin down. The gods tend to be like the parents who when you do well in school are all over your accomplishments but then when you want a real conversation they aren't always listening. 😅
Not the worst parent but definitely not the best either.

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

You know what's strange... I can actually relate on some level.
All through high school I often found myself at odds with my parents (like most teenagers) and it seemed like I never really had the support I needed. But when I brought the house down on stage in high school theatre or community theatre, they were right there "being proud" as ever. So I can relate.
Now the difference was they weren't an absent parent. And there is something to be said about tough love, and needing to earn respect. Something Annabeth alluded to with Percy on the train ride. Again, you just gotta know the rules. Fickle, but fair!

I'm learning to embrace stories that speak to that creative aspect of my very being. I was so surprised to find a rich layer of nuance that far exceeded my expectations for a show based off a young adult novel.
I'm not sure if you've read the books, but the one thing this gives me incredible hope for is a much more book accurate show based off of the Eragon books (The Inheritance Cycle), which is also using heavy involvement from the author and coming to Disney+ at some point!

3 days! I'm a pretty slow reader, so it may take me like 3 weeks (or more).
The funny thing is, I don't consider YA books outside of my age group. Mostly because, now that I'm older and have practiced my hand at writing a story and self-publishing, I'm more drawn to authors and the "why and how" their story came to be.
For example, I grew up loving The Chronicles of Narnia (perhaps that is why I'm so willing and able to fall in love with Percy Jackson), and now that I'm older I still love the stories, but I've also grown to appreciate the mind behind them.
Especially when C.S. Lewis has my most favorite quote:
"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."
I feel like this quote especially resonates with me now on this journey discovering the stories I would have loved when I was younger, and I am discovering I love even now as an adult!
Thank you for sharing your passion for reading. It's one that I, too, share, though I am admittedly not as well practiced at as of late!

“The demigod is the more dangerous creature” so I just took a Greek mythology class and this notion actually has merit! One of the things I learned was that the whole reason for the Trojan war and the killing off of demigods was that Gaia (the earth) was upset because humans had begun to overpopulate the earth. And one of the major reasons for this was that the demigods had been killing off all the monsters and none were left to keep the human population in check! So the gods orchestrated the Trojan war to kill off all the demigods and prevent further overpopulation. Demigods we’re literally like apex predators. The show means it in much more of a modern sense but being able to connect this notion back into actual Greek mythology is so cool to me!

“No one’s questioning Grover’s horns?” In the book he wears a Rasta cap to hide them :> But this show is establishing the mist as quite a bit stronger than in the books so it doesn’t matter :) in the books the mist hides many things, not by making them invisible but by translating them into something the human mind can understand- i.e bronze rhino -> yellow garbage truck. But it can’t hide everything- if Percy stabs a monster with a sword mortals would still see him injuring someone, even if it didn’t look like a monster. It would take a lot of exposition to explain all that though lol

No it was all a dream at the beginning. Starts as a memory and becomes a dream. He was just stuck in his memory age. So it's current, Percy, but he looks like when he took the pool lesson. 😅

Dreams and visions and other lucid experiences are so wild like that.
I remember having a dream when I was staying at a house in Colorado, there was a soft amber light in the upstairs that cast a faint glow. And a dark shadowy figure loomed over me from where I was sleeping in the living room. The crazy part was when my eyes opened. It was like they were never shut. I felt my eyelids snap open, amd the figure standing over me was gone, but nothing else had changed. The lighting, even things in the room that I didn't "know" were there were present in the dream like lucid state, but also exactly there too as I woke.
So that's a long way of saying that what you said makes sense. Altered states of consciousness, whether dreams or what have you are such a mind bender!

I haven't read the books yet, myself, and it's hard for me to even imagine, but it sounds like I'll get a bigger kick out of it when I start reading!
