Sonic Frontiers has been the most invested I have been for a speedrun since BOTW. The way the game is structured and the speed running tech makes speed runs such a fascinating watch. Cyberspace too. People complain how they want cyberspace physics to be like open zone, but honestly magnet dash wouldn’t be anywhere near as good if it had open zone physics. Speed running arcade mode is fun af.
Reminds me of the Cruiseboost, where it's really useful but hard to do consistently without practice. Cruiseboosting also requires late game upgrades as well lol
@@twistedgale in another popular speedrunning game SpongeBob BfBB, the most well-known part of the run is Cruiseboosting, in which you use a late game missle power up and at an angle to give permanent speed to your character

Btw if you lock on to an enemy and try to drop dash. You will autonomously cancel into spin slash animation. This normally works when you are in close proximity with any enemy.
great visualizations as always! Loved the minimap because it's hard to kinda see mid-route how far you're *really* moving. Spoiler: we found another trick while this video was in the works that usurps hit+run in some places and almost matches it in others, so if you don't see the XP routing from streamers these days, don't be too confused. Yes, sonic still flies around the map, don't worry about that bit :)

The official Sonic media gave a name to the "Magnet Dash". It is known as "Homing Dash". Though, funny it's called Homing Dash, because that's a move that actually exists in Sonic media (in Black Knight).

Speedrunners actually do fish for a while. However it is done only on Ouranos as it’s the only spot where it’s actually worth as each fish takes quite a long time.
The only way to get vertical height out of the trick is to release boost while you still have a lot of speed, this will transfer some of your horizontal speed to vertical.
Lol how speed runners travel, you all realize if you play the fishing mini game and get the scrolls you can teleport to each race portal you've completed in that zone and you also fast travel while in that zone to the koco elders
Not to sound rude but. Sonic wasn't really going fast it's mostly the camera giving you the feeling of going fast. If you zoom out the camera that feeling is completely gone. If sonic frontiers had a closer camera nobody would be saying sonic is slow. But with the camera closer also ruins the immersion the creators wanted you to feel. As instead of taking in the environment you're just focusing completely on sonic. Hope i wasn't sounding rude in that i never intended to sound that way.
While its similar in Nature, the trick is distinct enough in many ways so it has a different name. Different way of preforming, different routing, different effect, different attack, etc.

I don't think I've gotten this invested in speedrun evolution since the release of Metroid Dread. Sonic Frontiers is the gift that keeps giving.

Yep! Not sure if I included a clip of it but Katie had started doing this for one of the hit and runs on chaos. Very useful to proc it easily.
All flaws aside, the open world really made it one of the most interesting sonic games in regards to speedrunning
