    The “art” of pipe smoking is the major draw (no pun intended) and differentiator for me. There is a true lifelong artistic journey to pipe smoking, from pipe and tobacco selection, to packing, lighting, cadence, seemingly infinite variables all of which can effect the quest to find that “perfect smoke”, which also takes acquired talent. Pipe smoking is also a collector’s dream, and can become a very fun obsession for those of us in search of those nirvana smokes. And yes, they really do exist…I’m off to find my next one! :) Thanks Eddie, awesome video!

      Couldn’t agree more. Packed too tight? Too loose? Totally different experiences. Too wet? Too dry? Again, totally different experiences. That perfect smoke we all strive to reach is what makes this hobby/lifestyle so obsessive. I’ve gotten to the point where I can get great smokes from most of my favorite blends every time. But new blends I’ve never tried? Some trial and error is definitely involved.

      It's not "art" to pack and smoke a pipe. It's a learned skill, big difference, and that's all it is. Been smoking pipes since 1983.

      @@Hosunlee89 too tight and the pipe jams too loose and it goes out way too fast. With wet it makes the pipe do a gurgling sound and too dry it burns too fast and send red hot smoke into your mouth. Despite popular pipe smokers belief of little nicotine it does have it 35MGS to 55MGS based off tobacco strength. Mine is 45 MGS I tried 55 but it put me into a fuge like state and it was legit tobacco nothing funky.

    I'm a pipe and cigar smoker. The only advantage I find in Pipe vs Cigar is value for money. I can buy a tin of pipe tobacco that I can enjoy for 2-3 weeks with the price of one cigar. Top level cigars cost even more.
    But there is no free lunch out there. While most of cigars (even the cheap short filler ones) are made with pure, fermented, aged, high quality tobacco leaves - it is not the case with with pipe tobaccos.
    Pipe tobacco makers (even top end) add lot of chemicals to their blends. All blends are cased with chemicals/sugar to keep their humidity, some of them are topped for flavor, some chemicals to control burn rate... in other words, you don't know what is in the tin in addition to tobacco, because it is the blender's secret sauce. There is also no regulation to expose these add-ons, since tobacco is already considered by regulators as controlled substance.

      I have to admit I'm not overly versed in the legal aspects of what is and isn't required by pipe tobacco or even cigar disclosures. I do wish they all disclosed what was included, however. Even with food products, there are things companies don't have to disclose. I would much prefer more information rather than less, in all cases. Thanks for watching!

    As an avid cigar smoker, and as someone who fell in love with tobacco because of cigars, I have to say that I’m leaning more towards pipes now. Pipes and pipe tobacco are far cheaper than cigars. At one point I had 600+ cigars in my collection, and I constantly wonder how many blends and high end pipes I could have instead for the same cost. Also, I find that pipe tobacco has more flavor and variance in flavor than cigars do. The only negative about pipes I have is that I can’t smoke them in the summer. It’s just too hot where I’m at. My bowl is too hot to hold during the summer, and the flavors are too heavy. May-September is still cigar season for me, but during the colder months I smoke pipes exclusively. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my cigars. However, I’ve gone from smoking 4-6 a week to smoking 1 every week or every other week. For the price of one cigar I can get a 2 oz tin of tobacco that will last 15-20 smokes. For less than a box of cigars I can get a pipe that will last me a lifetime.

    I have a decent humidor filled with hundreds of cigars ranging from Southern Draw to Davidoff and Padron. And yes a lot of those sticks are amazing and delicious, but tell me why I still gravitate towards the relaxing smoking experience of a $15 dollar tin of tobacco in my briar pipe.
    Sometimes the act of packing, lighting, and smoking a pipe is so much more satisfying than just lighting up a cigar. I still enjoy my cigars, but it’s a once a week thing for me now. My pipes and pipe tobacco are something I love and meditate with on a daily basis. Most mornings I’ll start off with a 3/4 bowl of some burley/burley forward blend and a coffee. Evenings, I’ll wind down with some Virginia/VaPer or English/Balkan blends. It’s just so relaxing and allows me to be alone with my thoughts and just slow everything down.

    I am a tobacco pipe smoker and Yes I have smoked cigars even Cuban ones. I have smoked a pipe for 30 years and I find it was way better then cigars for a lot of reasons. Cigars I find are good but often feel less then a pipe due to nicotine. Pipe smokers swear pipes have nearly none but not true. Online I seen on measure pipes are 35MGS to 55MGS of the stuff making them twice as strong as Cuban cigars. The tobacco in a pipe has more choice due to the many offered for taste, smell and punch factor. St Bruno is the strongest I have smoked and so strong I fell asleep with my eyes open smoking it while walking on a train bridge in the UK. Pipes offer the same hand holding as a cigar with a cupped difference and feels amazing with mouth holding even if talking is a challenge. BTW I have enjoyed Many different English pipe tobaccos and enjoyed smoking them all.

    Ten bullseyes! While I will accept and smoke a cigar when one is offered, the last time I actually bought a box of them was for distribution in celebration of the birth of my youngest daughter--and she is now in her forties. My experience with the stogie puffers has been good; I can go to a cigar lounge and excite no comment re: my briar. And I have seen cigar people drop in a pipe club gathering with never a negative comment from the pipesters present. That said, I cast my vote against pipe filters and never argue with those who prefer them.

      I don't go as far as dedicating a specific pipe to a specific blend. I mostly smoke non-aromatic Virginia and Burley based blends, usually with some dark fired Kentucky and/or Perique in the mix, and I'll smoke those types on blends in most of the pipes I own. I do have just a few pipes that I'll only smoke English blends in, and a few I'll smoke Aromatics in.

    I never smoked a pipe before and getting my first pipe for Christmas.
    How long is a pipe season?
    When my session is over and I wanted to smoke again, can I have another session with the same pipe or do I need to wait few days to smoke that pipe again?

    • @ArmenChakmakian
      @ArmenChakmakian 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The pipe session depends on the size of the bowl and your “cadence.” You don’t have to pack a bowl to the top. You can pack it halfway for a shorter smoke. I have a little corn cob pipe from Missouri Meerschaum called a Short Stop for 10-20 min smokes.
      If your pipe is made of briar, you don’t want to smoke it back to back day after day. You want it to dry out between sessions which takes a few days. That’s one reason some pipers have several pipes in their collection. If you’re smoking a corncob pipe, you can smoke the same pipe every day. The other advantage to corncob pipes is that they don’t hang onto the flavor of the previous tobacco, which pipers refer to as “ghosting”. Pipers tend to designate certain pipes for certain tobacco. You may have one pipe for aromatic tobacco, and another pipe for anything containing Latakia tobacco, and then another one for Virginia tobacco, etc.
      Lots more information for you on youtube. Muttnchop Piper’s channel is a great place to start.
      Good luck, God bless, and have fun. Don’t get too caught up in the “rules” of pipe smoking. You will quickly get the hang of it.
      EDIT NOTE: I originally wrote Lambchop Piper but meant Muttnchop Pipe. Tomay-to; tomah-to ...

    As a tobacco grower myself there is one and only one advantage to the pipe: I can't yet make good maduro tobacco for the highly desirable cigar flavor, while it's easy for me to sun cure and cut up some pipe tobacco.
    But I really prefer the cigar.

  • @Jonahch2v9

    My theory is that cigar smokers like the simplicity. Light it and forget about it, no accessories needed. Pipe smokers like "tending the fire" and the bits and bobs that are part of the experience.

    Mr. PIPE NOOK, Washington and Maine are not allowed to order pipe tobacco online as of July last year. There’s no pipe or cigar stores within 100 miles of my house. The only tobacco store triples the price of tins and has no selection. HELP!!!!!!!

      in WA you could get tobacco shipped to oregon and make a run to pick it up, you might need an OR resident to order it though.
      or try having a local tobacco shop order it for you, dealer license and fees{ thanks Jay}

    I came to those same conclusions! I still like an occasional cigar, and in certain cases, they are more convenient. Over all, I believe pipes are objectively better.

    The objective benefits of Pipes will always be outweighed by the subjective social "cool factor" of cigars, sad but true.
    But that's okay, it keeps our community tightknit and friendly, no drama or egos :)

      It's not John's pipe cabinet, no...but I do believe I purchased it from the same Etsy seller his came from, and it is very similar. I honestly didn't plan it that way...I didn't even think about John's cabinet when I put in my order and chose the options. But as soon as I put it behind me in my videos, people noticed how similar it was and started asking me about it, LOL! There are good and bad aspects to the cabinet, but overall, I'm happy with it. You can search TH-cam for "Pipe Cabinet Review" and see my further thoughts on the subject.

    The most prevalent complaint of Pass-Through filters for me is that because of their high absorption levels, using them inhibits the flavor of your pipe tobacco

    • @ThePipeNook
      @ThePipeNook  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's certainly a commonly held opinion of pipe filters. However, I find that pass-through charcoal filters actually help focus the taste of the pipe tobacco by removing excess tars and other impurities from the smoke. All I can tell folks is to try them and see if you like them, or if they help with tongue-bite. And if you find that filters negatively affect the taste of your tobacco, is the alleviation of tongue-bite worth it for you personally?

    • @sonny2120
      @sonny2120 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePipeNook The activated charcoal filters do affect the taste of tobacco and give the impression of an immediate loss of flavour to the non-filtered pipe smoker. However, as Eddie says, I believe the flavour of the smoke becomes focused or highlighted. I only noticed a huge difference after about 2 weeks of smoking with filters. If I smoked one bowl of tobacco with a 9mm filter, I wouldn't like it, and didn't when I first tried due to the reasons PA Piper stated. It took time for my palate and body chemistry to adapt from non-filter to filtered. I still have non-filtered pipes and enjoy them too. Now I have noticed that the filters taught me how to have a great smoke free of any tongue bite even with non-filtered pipes. Before I used filters I would get immediate tongue bite from blends with red Virginias even when I tried lighting with a match without drawing flame directly into the tobacco. I don't know what happened but now I can smoke red Virginia and VaPer blends without a filter and also without any tongue bite. I say if you try it out, smoke only 9mm for at least one week, and if you still don't like it, then no loss and return to what you enjoy and makes you happy.

    As a pipe and cigar smoker I can say the only reason I smoke a pipe is because it’s more economical. I didn’t get any of the natural tobacco notes from a pipe that I do a cigar. I’d love to find pipe tobacco as satisfying as cigars. But so far I’ve only been disappointed.

      Well, I think there's some crossover there. But cigars are definitely more user friendly, while pipes require quite a bit more time and experience to get the most out of them. It's a fun journey, though!

      Hi, Anthony! There are literally hundreds of blends on the market these days, so it's difficult to pick just one blend for a beginner recommendation. However, I do maintain a list of recommendations broken into basic categories, that I can email you. If you'd like this list, please email me to request it on the "contact" page of my site. Thanks!
