Of all the modern adaptations, this one is the most faithful to the original story. They made Gonzo the Dickens narrator so that he could deliver exposition that you usually don't hear in other renditions.

The Dickens family, as well as many people who study Dickens for their lives hold this up as one of the most accurate adaptations because of how many lines that are taken verbatim from the novel

The original Dickens story IS a horror movie of sorts, with a bunch of ghosts basically haunting Scrooge. Being written in the 1840's, it has long been in the public domain, and copies of the original printing, complete with the illustrations that Dickens chose, are easy to find on Google. It is also a remarkably short book and a very easy read. (This novel is credited with introducing Christmas celebrations with many traditions we still follow today. During Puritan times, any making yule time merry was frowned upon, even illegal.)

There's one part of the film that you missed, though it's no fault of your own as it's something that over the years has been stupidly left out, put back in and so on when it always should've been in there without question. Before Belle leaves Scrooge, she sings a song When Love Is Gone, which the future version of Scrooge even sings along with before breaking down during upon seeing what he missed out on. Walt Disney Studios' chairman wanted it cut because he felt it would be too slow-paced and upsetting for children, yet the song is vital to emphasise what the viewers take in, and leads to its counterpoint song at the end 'When Love Is Found'. It was put back in for all VHS releases, US LaserDisc releases, DVD releases, but then only as a bonus feature in the Digital Download portion of the Blu-Ray version of the film, without being on the Blu-Ray itself.
It took until last year on the film's 30th anniversary to fully include the film with the song on Disney+, but it should've always been. And so what if it's tough for children to watch and take in? That was the POINT. Check it out for yourself. It's very powerfully delivered, and makes Rizzo's sobbing at the end all the more justified.
Also great turn by Scrooge at 4:14, like he's thinking "You what, mate?!" It's certainly realistic; if Michael Caine turned and gave _me_ that look, I'd run for my life!

    • @emlyewng
      @emlyewng  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

that’s wild to me that they would take out her whole song cuz it could be upsetting to kids with how dark the overall story & how spooky the future ghost is 😭 That scene did feel strangely brief when I watched it so it all makes sense now

@@emlyewng The Ghost of Christmas Past in this film was done by filming a puppet in a tank of water in front of a green screen, in order to achieve an ethereal effect. As Brian Henson explained, it was initially a tank of baby oil, but it made it expensive and difficult to keep the puppet clean. So they used water for the rest of the filming. I agree about her appearance. As Adorkable Rachel said in her review, she looks more like something from another world than a regular Muppet. But then the character's a ghost, therefore she _should_ look like that.

One of the early versions they wanted originally was mich closer to what you were expecting the movie to be as a straight forward parody of the the book. And famous Muppets would've played the spirits. Robin, Scooter or Fozzie ad the ghost of Christmas Past, Miss Piggy as the present, and either Animal or Gonzo as the Future. (One of idea for Gonzo was to have his nose stick out of his hood.) Tim Curry was also considered for a more comedic Scrooge. But this gonna be a made-for-TV movie in ABC. And once the team did more research on the book, they loved it so much, they made it closer the book's darker tone and making it more sophisticated with new characters as the spirits in honor of Charles Dickens. Wanting to find a role for Gonzo in the story, they thought of something that's never been done in any adaptation prior, which is to have narration that was ripped from the pages that Dickens wrote and made him as the narrator and to be played by Gonzo as irony because he was the Muppet that nobody imagine him playing. And 95% of his narrations are from the book. And while Curry never got the chance to play Scrooge, he'd later play Long John Silver in the semi-sequel, Muppet Treasure Island. (Which you gotta react to soon!)

We are sorry that you got a version that missed one of the most important parts.
You'd have had the waterworks turn on, when you saw this.
The part that's missing out of almost every copy out there. When Disney got their claws into it, they cut this song apparently because it was too much of a downer.
It gives a much bigger impact to the movie.

And though you cared for me
There's distance in your eyes tonight
So we're not meant to be

    The love is gone
    The sweetest dream
    That we have ever known

    The love is gone
    I wish you well
But I must leave you now alone
There comes a moment in your life
Like a window and you see
    Your future there before you
And how perfect life can be
But adventure calls with unknown voices
    Pulling you away
Be careful or you may regret
    The choice you make someday
    When love is gone

    I wish you well
But I must leave you now alone

    It was almost love
    It was almost always
It was like a fairytale we'd live out
    You and I

This is the one ghost that Dickens merely suggests, without an illustration to accompany it. It was described as both old and young. Movie adaptations reakkt struggle how to do this one. The recent Disney cartoon with Jim Carey does as a large candle, the face on the flame itself.

  • @sadee1287
    @sadee1287 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Unfortunate that you were not remotely familiar with the Dickens story this film is based on. It being dark and depressing (at the beginning) is kind of the point. Scrooge has let his miserly ways make him cynical and cruel. It takes the warning from his deceased former partners and the visits from the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future to reveal to him his errors and selfishness which has lead him to become the way he is, and that if he continued to be that way, he would die alone and despised.
Granted you are not familiar with the Muppets, although they've been showcased on Sesame Street since 1969. The Muppet Show, which ran from 1976 to 1981 would have made you familiar with the characters in the movie. Almost all the seasons are available to stream for free.
I found much of your review off-putting. Too many negative comments. No, the ghost of Christmas past was NOT creepy. She is after all supposed to be a ghost. It would have been better had you talked about the transformation of Scrooge as he re-lived his past, present and realized his potential future. Applying the Bechdel test was just.....baffling. This is a movie based on a Dickens novella written in 1843 in the Victorian era. It's about Ebenezer Scrooge. It's NOT about how many women characters are in the story and dissing the narrative based on that.
This cinematic adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" is one of the most popular, as it tells the story in a cute and humorous manner without losing the inherent message. It's rightly loved by many for that reason. There's some amazing creativity in the Muppet characterizations and they blend seamlessly with the human actors.
Sorry to say I will not be viewing any of your other reactions, based on this one.
