    Ian, since finding your channel in 2019, my financial life and that of my family has completely changed. I have a "high yielder" account, a long term retirement account, and a "Core" account all for dividends. My biggest mistake - selling to get capital gains and losing income! I do not sell anymore. It's hard when the market just keeps going up, but you have to get that snow ball going! Thanks for sharing your OG wisdom with us for so many years!

  • @samsargent8326
    @samsargent8326 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    The best way I have found to avoid mistakes is to focus more on the growing income stream that I am creating and less on the value of the portfolio (I know, easier said than done!) The value of the portfolio will rise and fall dramatically, the income will grow consistently over time. All 5 great points my friend, wishing you and your family a prosperous New Year!

    Happy holidays Ian! I have watched your videos since the early days in your backyard with your red notebook. I love this kind of video with a analytical view on general strategies and ways to invest. And good examples of what not to do. You have so many good points in this video. Years ago you made some videos about how to build a diversified portfolio including examples on well prices stocks in different types of companies. Perhaps that could be an idea for a future video. I think it would be helpfull for new investors. Greetings from Denmark. Best wishes, Henrik.

    How do ETFs work in the dividened income context? Is it possible to easily switch an ETF's settings from reinvesting dividends to sending cash in your bank account? Or do you have to sell your holdings in an "accumulation" ETF and re-buy the same fund as a distributing one (perhaps thereby incurring taxes)? I am a dumb newbie where ETFs are concerned. lol

    I had a set back couple of times . Once with Canadian oil sands and the political changes that cause this. Also a Chinese investment that cost me when they stopped paying. Now I do mostly etfs and feel much more comfortable about the picks. I hardly ever see a dividend cut

    Ian thank you for your honesty! I am 59 and throughout the years have had many set backs. Most recent is I sold INTC when it declined to $29 and cut it's dividend. It has rebounded now to $50 and has increased dividend and has great momentum. I am focused on SCHD and getting diversity with less management.

    • @ppcian
      @ppcian  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your kind words! Thanks for sharing your experience with INTC. I am also focused on SCHD these days. I'm finding my time is better spent earning more money and then just keeping it simple with SCHD. Wishing you a great one! (Disc: I'm long SCHD)

    • @reptilianskin
      @reptilianskin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I sold INTC also. I held it for years. And averaged down a couple times. It was a very small percentage of my portfolio, and I had little interest building it up even before the dividend cut. I ultimately got rid of 5-6 positions I knew I would not build up and like you, I bought SCHD because my preference for that particular account was to be less hands on with picking stocks. My larger accounts with larger holdings still have my attention for buying more of my stocks and reinvesting dividends. But even in those accounts I sold small positions and bought a dividend ETF.

    • @davebarker1778

      I sold intel also along with 3m target and Verizon for my tax loss for the year. I looked at my shares of Verizon and saw so much red. I hadn’t been in the black with trances since 2013 which I just finally decided to throw in the towel. I saw Target as a lost cause also with their locked merch and unpopular with mainstream policies. I luckily had some inherited old 3m shares to unload to cover the losses. I now am sitting on a lot of cash to hopefully deploy to not be dead money like these stocks were.

      Yep HE burned me too. No pun intended. I even bought extra after the fire. I guess I'll sit and wait on that one. Maybe more Pepsi. Utz seems to disappear and restock at the dollar general in Florida their sales appear to be awesome. I think electric delivery trucks in the Southern US have real potential Hurricanes not withstanding. It's not as cold in winter so no battery problems there. Relatively flat on the Gulf Coast. Just needs infrastructure build out.

    • @johnmonk3381
      @johnmonk3381 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Me too. I sold intc only to get into google, abnb and visa. But all of these did extremely well and combined, they exceeded the returns that I would have gathered if I had just stuck on holding intc. Shows it's important to cut losers and redeploy the proceeds into your best investment ideas, admitting your mistakes and moving is VERY important. The market is not the place to show how macho you are unless you want to keep making "donations" to it

    Total return net of fees, taxes and extreme volatility is king.
    Dividends won’t save a company with slow or no earnings growth regardless of the yield, CAGR or years of consecutive dividend payments. Screen for growth and quality first, then choose dividend-paying companies if you still find those companies attractive at current valuations.

      Hindsight investing is 20/20 ain't it? But don't forget staying out had advantages too, it would have kept your losses minimal if a crash had happened instead, so why hadn't you focused on this aspect, there's always two sides to the same coin and being okay with ANY outcome is crucial to being and staying sane in the market otherwise you will keep brashing yourself over the tiniest stuff that you have absolutely no control over

Sometimes you come across somthing that no one is mentioning. That is only way to aquire it for the uninflated. So you read a little. Fall for the story line , sometimes that little money is like say hey. I'm here. I believe in this company. Even at 1 share. I can tell you something spec I was looking at is up 60% now and it pays a dividend. I was litterally looking it it for almost 2 months. Little cigar butt stock. Man SOOOOOO pissed. They out there. I like UTZ to ian. Their packaging sucks. Looks dated their weak sales are probably just due to the fact that people exepct those things to taste old. In front of 70 flavors of doritoes ???? 1-3 ETFs and a small allocation to 10 or less individual stocks would be a good balance between diversification, passivity and sleeping well at night during down turns while still scratching the itch of active trading.
    If you can’t keep it to 10 companies or less, you probably just need to be in ETFs entirely. You’re likely going to waste your time and leave a lot of wealth on the table on top of that.
