Funny looking back at this comment. Switch sold great, but is back to moderate sales... just waiting on Smash and Let's Go to kick the sales up again. And shortlived fad as it was: Pokemon Go has had solid spikes of community revivals that still make it more profitable than most apps. Unlike most apps: people seeing people return to Pokemon Go excites them to go back to it, days or weeks at a time. That's something even the most popular apps can't brag about.
I love the phrase 'All of the nintendo phone games are going to be free, nintendo have got to make their money somehow.' What an amazing world we live in.
Amazing in a good way..? Because I think George said that with a sense of foreboding and pessimism, and implied that the free to play model would compromise the quality and design of at least some of those games.
I think it's the irony of the sentence itself. Like, how can you profit from a product that's given out for free? It's mostly a recent thing the world ha developed into, hence the "What an amazing world we live in".
I don't think Pokemon Go would be nearly as successful if people didn't have a platform to post screenshots/memes/etc about the game. It really seems like half the time people are posting pictures to Twitter/Facebook and making TH-cam videos instead of actually playing the damn thing I personally find it's nostalgia bait for the most part and can't see this "game" lasting more than a few months at the most. Also, as someone who hasn't missed a main series game since the originals, I'm just insanely tired of gen1. I guess people getting out and socialising/exersicing never really hurts though
Nintendo having success with releasing content on systems they don't own might finally push them towards being a software rather than a hardware company, playing to their strengths as a corporation.
Yes, even though their games are built off their hardware, they should ditch that because their already-popular IP is doing well with a (free) spin-off on mobile phones. Breath of the Wild should be on PS4 because I like Pokemon Go.
I'd love it if they could do that but there upper management will have to change for that to happen...if they could still make good handhelds or some sort of a hybrid tablet that runs android while still making games on other consoles would be the dream imo
+Zaph Ior it's because that style has become popular with RPG's lately and while I am really excited for that game as well I still would like to play at the see the quality of it and I think the other thing isThe fact that Nintendo is finally changing the formula up a little bit to make it more mainstream and enjoyable for everybody
Nintendo is like that middle aged principle that tries really to hard to be your friend and cool. Sure you can get caught up with his enthusiasm and carefree attitude, but he starts to get on your nerves eventually.
M.C Zandogg Truthfully, I still don't know what Nintendo's done wrong. Their game library? The Wii U has a lot more worthwhile exclusives than the PS4 and Xbox One put together. Their interface? Sure, a bit clunky, but where it counts, it works. I understand the Wii U was a financial disappointment, but I don't see any reason why it is. Maybe bad marketing, but as George said, the Wii U is fun--and unfortunately, fun doesn't sell nowadays.
***** Why, I would love to! Unfortunately, I still seem to be needed--your heart would break in my absence, and suffice to say I am a caring human being.
FE has been a casual dating sim since they introduced affinities and its what transformed it from ok to insanely popular. I actually think that would be the smart move.
It's interesting watching this now, after Pokemon Go faded into something much more niche, but the NX really did save Nintendo and animal crossing is now a mobile game with pocket size microtransactions that make sense.
I haven't played Pokemon since Junior High. I'm currently 30 years old. I've been playing Pokemon Go every day after work. It may be a gimmick, but it's a good gimmick. It's what I needed after several weeks of terrible news from every direction. It's nice to be able to go outside, go for a walk in the park, and meet a dozen strangers. To get to talk to them/smack talk/share tips. It's nice to have that kind of faith in people again.
Once again ,a very well written, intresting, well put together video you've made. If this comment somehow catches your eye, I want to let you know that you're one of the few people I have tremendous amount of respect for. The professionalism is unmatched by any other channels that are related to gaming and I love how fresh your content is.
I always appreciate your analysis on topics like these, George. You put out solid and quality content. Thank you for continuing to do so. Keep doing you!
It's not the age as much as it is the location and type of person you are I live in Michigan and I'm definitely not gonna be walking around in the winter in the freezing cold
Aaron Harris I'm not saying that kids are this game's main demographic, I've seen gopniks (Eastern European chavs) discussing this game at a bar. It's just that the 8 year old me would have been very excited about this.
***** Say what you want about it. It's done something that no other game company has ever been able to do, and that's go outside. Moreover, it's fun for most people who aren't socially awkward. It's not that the game mechanics are anything special or anything. It's the social aspect of going out there and being able to interact with other people over a game in a way that people never have before. I made plenty of friends playing this, and actually had quite a bit of fun while playing. It's not for everyone, sure. Especially people who aren't socially capable or unable to go for a walk, but it's something that hasn't been done before.(Yes, different from Ingress.)
Shitposter-kun Well that is great that you are going outside more and developed social interactions with others. However, as a person who does outside to get fit and improve my body and is an extrovert. I don't see it as some holy achievement. Not all gamers fit the stereotype that they have to be introverts, shut-ins that only communicate within themselves. I always found that to be grating more than anything. I love in depth mechanics and something to sink my teeth into a game. I also love good story telling if mechanics to a game aren't thrilling or game changing. Pokemon Go is simply another bare bones game that is fad of July. How many people will be playing this game three months from now? Maybe six months? What about in a year? Do I want people to be social and speak about their hobbies more? Of course, I do have a degree in Sociology and working on my second. I am probably not the type of person to go around aimlessly searching for something that I could get from biking and walking around my park.
Just make sure the phone has gyroscope or it won't be able to use AR. I recently got Moto G 3rd gen and it's been really good for the money, except now that I can't use AR with it. I guess the AR is more of a novelty though, the game still runs fine.
You don't need the AR. You can turn it off. Although I don't know if it will allow installation if it doesn't detect one. Check out the LG G4. They're pretty robust and you can probably find discounts now that the 5 is out. The Moto phones are also good options.
Yeah, same. Got Android 4.2 without any official/custom upgrades to 4.4, and buying a new phone would be wasteful given the fact that my phone works fine for everything besides PoGo.
It's interesting to see how comments on this video are about how "Pokemon Go has died!!!!1111!!"... when it is still in the top five earners on both IOS and Android.
Hey George, just wanna say how great this video was! I love when you do these types of videos where you dive deep into a certain subject. Awesome stuff!
As always one of the best journalist, fact gatherer and analysis in the buisness. Love you to George :D Pokemon Go is simple, might lose instalbase after a while and as you said Nintendo might not get that much of what it earns BUT it once again show how much nostalgic power Nintendos IPs still hold. Never realize how much my generation childhood was defined by Pokemon (I was in first grade when the first game came out). They just need to continue nurture their old IPs with good games and get some new IPs together with some third party stuff and a new good console, piece of cake :P
I was going to comment on the original video something like "This needs a revision now that Pokemon Go is out" before this video came out. You're incredibly good at knowing your audience, George :D
Hey superbunnyhop, Though i have never said it in a comment i always appreciate a more intelligent look at games that you do better than any other critic i have found. Love that you take time and focus on something with a deeper meaning to be had. Thank you a lot.. Dave

Jose Colella Ehh.. different appeal. You can't really compare the two, can you? Just like you can't compare console and PC gaming (not this way at least).
This isn't the first time I've heard this, and it's hard for me to agree, but... it could be true. It might just be their swan song. But maybe the NX will be interesting, innovative, and cheap enough for us to get on board with it. That's highly unlikely though. I think that Nintendo can get themselves out of a bind. They just need to do something really fucking cool.
I think Miitomo would have stayed on my phone if there was more to do than change your clothes, answer strange questions, and play the weird clothes minigame.
Wow, this is even more complicated than I thought. I knew about the Pokemon Company and Niantic thing, and soon stockholders figured that out too and realized they backed the wrong horse (Nintendo), but I had no idea Ninty had so little ownership of Pokemon. Dang.
"If You're Sick of hearing about Pokémon Go for the past week let me tell you what hearing about Sports is like for the past three decades"---Terry Blas
It's more annoying hearing people talk about it offline. I already hate most of the people at my office, but that just got amplified with pokemon go since they wont shut up about it.
+eishikibahamut well, and I understand your plight, but... most people really like it :/ sides... hearing the stories of how my coworkers in suits caught a mankey with some fancy parkour is always interesting
Why hasn't Nintendoland been thought of before? Look up "Nintendoland HAWP". Ashly and Anthony Burch did a whole skit about a Nintendoland theme park back in 2012. I already found that amusing when the video game Nintendoland later came out.
I've played with Pokémon GO! a little bit and so far I'm enjoying it. I don't think we need to worry much about popularity dying down because as far as I know they've only released Pokémon from Gen 1 and 2 thus far, so as long as they keep dishing out more Pokémon every few months or every year (and work on the server problems) we should be hearing about Pokémon GO! for a good long time from now.
yes, it's that overlooked fact that Nintendo is only riding Pokémon Co's coattail right now. but, as proven by the stock surge, Nintendo will get the credit...
What's so important about Pokemon GO is not what it is but what it means for the value of the franchise. Pokemon is one of the most valuable properties in the world right now.
This touches on something Tarmark just recently talked about in a video, albeit from a different angle. His thesis was that Nintendo was going down an almost Sega-like route, and their console business kind of relies on NX being a hit. That's not mentioning their lockdown on handheld gaming, of course lol I think they'll keep strong there for a while.
All they have to do when the P-GO usage dips, is release the Gen 2 update, with all the Silver/Gold pokemon now included, and then after that HOENN UPDATE, etc until it's caught up with the main series, which could take as long as a year or two per generation.
Most TH-camrs don't do research. Also, they appeal to the cynical masses by making videos going against punching bag Nintendo, who can never catch a break with people even when they add $7.5 billion with a B to their market share. Pokemon Go basically made up for lost sales in the Wii U and even the Gamecube, plus profit. But it's Nintendo, so let's not congratulate their success and see the positive in how people are enjoying themselves. WHAT IF THEY FAIL? WHAT IF NX FAILS? WHAT IF POKEMON GO IS A FAD? Drink that cynicism up, boys. The trough is full in this video.
I guess you missed the part of this video where Pokemon Go isn't actually Nintendo's success. Nintendo had fuck all to do with Pokemon Go and is only reaping benefits because people *think* they made the game when it was actually Niantic and The Pokemon Company. I mean that was basically the entire point of this video. The fact that the most successful "Nintendo" thing in some time isn't a Nintendo thing, and Nintendo themselves may be likely to keep doing the same stupid crap that put the Wii U in the terrible position it's in right now. But hey, completely miss the point and get pissy because he (probably intentionally) misspelled the name of a shovelware mobile game developer wrong.
***** Success for businesses equals money. If $7.5 billion isn't success, you should get off the internet and get back to work. I need someone to ask me if I want fries with that. Make mine a large.
We'll need to have "the talk" someday about whether or not the Nintendo greats (shigeru miyamoto and the like) still have what it takes to bring truly great and/or innovative games. They seemed to be constantly pushing evolutionary deadends and being beaten by other developers when it comes to more traditional design. I wonder if all the remaining Nintendo fervor and fandom is just kinda coasting along on past successes. Constantly hoping for the next thing to be great.
There's a fourth project that just came to fruition today. Low cost hardware for developing markets. The 'mini collectors edition nes'. basically one of those multi game Atari or Sega Genesis things you see in Rite Aid.
5:50 "MOBAGE"'s "GE" stands for the "GA" in GAME actually (Japanese transcription of English), sharing its pronounciation. :p It's short for "Mobairu Geimu" (Mobile Game). Just like Pokémon.
It hurts to think that Nintendo might have to pull a SEGA in the next decade. I mean, on the one hand it'd be nice to see series like Splatoon and Metroid on PC with KBM controls. But seeing Nintendo go 3rd party would be a hard thing to witness. Some of my earliest memories involve Nintendo consoles.
If they play their cards right tho, it could remain kinda big. Millions of people have it installed - all they need now is a reminder from time to time that it's on their phone to keep the interest high.
Well the problem with that is that the hype culture we live in now keeps people moving from one fad to the next week to week. It's a meme culture that sees a short burst of attention then like a firework fades into obscurity. If updates keep people playing it will be at most 3 months.
+sdgundum990 Agreed. I think that of they could incorporate a better battle system and make it more accessible to casual crowd as well as a trade system it would extend the life of this game.
I'm really enjoying pokemon go so far. Not necessarily the game, it's actually not that great and buggy as hell, but the social interactions I've had with other people playing have been quite pleasant. I've finally talked to some of my neighbors and people at work. Since everyone seems to be playing, it's fun to interact with a group of people hanging out around a gym. I hope they improve the game soon because there's not a whole lot to keep people interested outside of the initial hook.
Nailed it on the head and what I've argued with my friends for years, if their consoles met even a fifth of the kinds of effort they put into software........well they'd be dandy.
The way they're going to ensure Pokemon Go's longevity is the slow release dates in different country's. In Canada for example, the game works fine, but it's still isn't officially released. Whenever the downloads or the money-well begins to run short they will release it in Country X and get a few million more downloads.
Keep in mind, if it wasn't mentioned in the video (I don't recall hearing this), that most of the profit to be made from GO will not be going to Nintendo. So what is this GO thing really going to give them? More people into Poke? I doubt it - people are more into the AR/social aspect that what license it is tied to, and for all we know, no one is going to give a shit in a month as they move along to the next big thing.
that's more likely what Nintendo is hoping for...hell it made me want to grab the old releases and replay them and maybe try some of the new ones (I haven't really played anything beyond ruby and sapphire
Mike Mac the success of GO is far too mass market for it to be counted as something that will lead to more longer term benefit. The both need to iterate on GO quickly and have new things frequently enough that are Poke. Not sure I see any hint of them doing either - and even if those who made GO do, that will benefit them way more then Ninty. That new, smaller NES is possibly a much better move, but could also be meaningless in the long end.
TEHPURPLE DRAGUN sorry, they own most of the pokemon company as well- through a 1/3 claim as their own company, as well as partial ownership of gamefreak
My only experience with DeNA was a Star Wars tower defense game with lots of grinding and microtransactions out the wazoo. It shut down within a year and a half. Suffice to say, I'm not exactly optimistic about Nintendo's partnership with them.
Pokemon Go comes closer to the all encompassing "Pokemon MMO/VR experience" people have been dreaming about since being kids. It's quite understandable why it's so fruitous given the premise and love people have for the Pokemon universe as a whole. GameFreak and Nintendo simply don't seem to understand the potential that lies in their brands, especially Pokemon, which is yet still one of the most sold game series in the world. They think the old gameplay and pure nostalgia is what is selling, (which is only half the truth) but the seem to decline the idea that people want to live out that nostalgia, they want a newer, better and more apparent Pokemon. The way pokemon is done now through handheld consoles and periodic second-degree console releases (besides Pokken Tournament which was actually a good console game) is simply too restrictive for most Pokemon fans. Pokemon Go is far from being a truly great game, but it imbues the essence of comminity, sociality and the exciting feeling of finding and catching your own personal Pokemon that most people were interested concernig Pokemon.
Great Job George, these are always my favorite videos from you. Sorry your viewers can be butts and that you have to put the disclaimer that you are going to be critical of something the mainstream considers "good" right now
Watching all this old videos from my favorite youtubers where the NX is mentioned, it's so funny how we were so clueless months ago
It's funny looking back on this now, where Pokemon Go ended up being a shortlived fad and the NX ended up selling like hotcakes.
Why did they even name it NX?
seems like a weird name for that concept
My theory on that is that NX actually means Nintendo Switch. The X representing "switch".
The GameCube was called Dolphin and the Wii was called Revolution. I think NX could have just stood for "NeXt".
Dequan Milete they actually said Nintendo X just sounded cool
Funny looking back at this comment. Switch sold great, but is back to moderate sales... just waiting on Smash and Let's Go to kick the sales up again.
And shortlived fad as it was: Pokemon Go has had solid spikes of community revivals that still make it more profitable than most apps. Still way cooler than the scumbag used car salesmen Sony and Microsoft.
True, but lets not get into the habit of choosing less than what we deserve just because there are worse options.
To be honest I have had issues with all three, but if I'm going to go anywhere, it would be Nintendo last.
M.C Zandogg Truthfully, I still don't know what Nintendo's done wrong. Their game library? The Wii U has a lot more worthwhile exclusives than the PS4 and Xbox One put together. Their interface? Sure, a bit clunky, but where it counts, it works.

you are assuming much about this game's demographic.

Some one already discovered a body with Pokemon Go already. Check out razorfist's channel.
It's sad when a mobile game is what's gonna save Nintendo instead of actual games.
It is an actual game. And probably one of the better things that's come out of nintendo in the recent few years.
If this was the best that Nintendo could offer, then that is pretty sad.

you underestimate pokemon fans....
+FoxDie77777 Pretty accurate though, this is a fad. This game won't really last through the year, our attention spans are too short.
pokemon fans will be playing for a long time assuming they keep adding content. it's the other 90% that are going to forget about it in a month.
All they have to do is fix the bugs and starting doing daily/monthly events and keep on until they have to add more Pokemon. It will die, though.
+pulser0 Pokemon fans will also just give up and play an actual mainline game with more content.

About the NX, I think it will be Nintendo's Dreamcast.
Console gaming in general, dead? How so?
The Wii U is really the only major console that has failed, during this generation.

Lol, loved that moment when the news woman walks past the on-air camera.
Four months later... the hype surrounding Pokemon Go is largely dissipating, as suspected...
I love you too George
I love you too, SuperBunnyhop.
Wow, this is even more complicated than I thought. I knew about the Pokemon Company and Niantic thing, and soon stockholders figured that out too and realized they backed the wrong horse (Nintendo), but I had no idea Ninty had so little ownership of Pokemon. Dang.
When you got a poke.on go ad before this
"If You're Sick of hearing about Pokémon Go for the past week let me tell you what hearing about Sports is like for the past three decades"---Terry Blas
I love you two, George.
7:43 Pokemon Sleep took a while
Internet, will you please shut up about Pokemon GO!
nah
He's not really talking about Pokemon go here
let people enjoy things you dullard
I LOVE your videos so much! Keep up the good work!
I HAD THE BEST POKEMON BATTLE EVER !!! I UPLOADED THE VIDEO FOR YOU GUYS TO FEEL THE WRATH OF THE EPIC BATTLE
WOW AWESOME !! i loved your epic battle very coooool
+Heaven lmfao
I've played with Pokémon GO! a little bit and so far I'm enjoying it. I don't think we need to worry much about popularity dying down because as far as I know they've only released Pokémon from Gen 1 and 2 thus far, so as long as they keep dishing out more Pokémon every few months or every year (and work on the server problems) we should be hearing about Pokémon GO! for a good long time from now.
Miyamoto is like the Paul McCartney of video games at this point.
Nintendo: Masters of not using there own IP's and letting opportunities pass them by at one million miles per second.
I wish you had the time and funding to do videos like these much more frequently. You produce some damn fine content, sir.
We get it, man, we love you too.
yes, it's that overlooked fact that Nintendo is only riding Pokémon Co's coattail right now. but, as proven by the stock surge, Nintendo will get the credit...
Fact? Ha ha.
What's so important about Pokemon GO is not what it is but what it means for the value of the franchise. Pokemon is one of the most valuable properties in the world right now.
I love you too, George.
I still play pokemon go...
This touches on something Tarmark just recently talked about in a video, albeit from a different angle. His thesis was that Nintendo was going down an almost Sega-like route, and their console business kind of relies on NX being a hit. That's not mentioning their lockdown on handheld gaming, of course lol I think they'll keep strong there for a while.
he's been making entertaining and insightful videos for years. See for yourself!
I love how you always need to remind everyone that you love them to prepare for the shitstorm.
I... I love you too George, again.
I love your more journalistic videos like this
Finally someone who is realistic and not passionate/fanboy of nintendo.
All they have to do when the P-GO usage dips, is release the Gen 2 update, with all the Silver/Gold pokemon now included, and then after that HOENN UPDATE, etc until it's caught up with the main series, which could take as long as a year or two per generation.
Pokémon Go. Is. Literally. The. Same. Game. As. Ingress. As if Niantic just copied and pasted most of it, and added Pokémon.
I'm surprised I'm not hearing more people saying this. Not necessarily a bad thing, but still.
You're wrong, Pokemon go is only 1/5th of what ingress is :^)
I have to disagree. This is what Ingress should have been, namely with something to do in the intermittent time of traveling from portal to portal.
Having played both games, I can safely say they're almost nothing alike.
Most Nintendo games are copy and paste though.
I thought DeNA was pronounced "D.N.A.".
It is. I have no idea why people don't see that lol
It wouldn't be a George video if he didn't mispronounce something, though.
Very informative vid, thank you!
Kinda scared of Nintendo going completely mobile in a couple years if this keeps up though...
Nice editorial piece. Thank you.
I love you, too, George.
Thanks for making videos, they are awesome
We love you too, +Super Bunnyhop, we really do.
5:50 "MOBAGE"'s "GE" stands for the "GA" in GAME actually (Japanese transcription of English), sharing its pronounciation. :p
It's short for "Mobairu Geimu" (Mobile Game).
I love you too, mr Bunnyhop.
"Fun isn't what sells these days". I wonder why...
Pokemon go will be irrelivent to half the audience by the end of the month.
I agree. There simply aren't enough features to keep it engaging for very long. All you do is catch Pokemon and collect items. nothing else.
+Richard Foff well you can battle (only at gyms) but the battle system is garbage.
"Disclaimer: Blah, Blah, Blah, I love you"
Thanks for the warning Gorge.
Nailed it on the head and what I've argued with my friends for years, if their consoles met even a fifth of the kinds of effort they put into software........well they'd be dandy.
Awesome video, I was expecting a video review for Playdead's Inside before anything Pokemon Go related though!!
The way they're going to ensure Pokemon Go's longevity is the slow release dates in different country's. In Canada for example, the game works fine, but it's still isn't officially released. Whenever the downloads or the money-well begins to run short they will release it in Country X and get a few million more downloads.
Pokemon go is fantastic!
I wonder how it feels to work hard on a video only to see it become outdated the same day you finally upload it
5:50 Did... did George just pronounce "mobage" like "homage?"
Oh, George...
Great video man. Keep it up!
Another great review by Super Bunny Dumps!
oh, i love you too george ;3
Love you too bunnyhop
I really want to see what Nintendo is going to pull off next year. I like to have hope on their ability to innovate.
Mike Mac
the success of GO is far too mass market for it to be counted as something that will lead to more longer term benefit.
The both need to iterate on GO quickly and have new things frequently enough that are Poke. Not sure I see any hint of them doing either - and even if those who made GO do, that will benefit them way more then Ninty.
That new, smaller NES is possibly a much better move, but could also be meaningless in the long end.
actually, nintendo owns the majority of the app. they own most of the pokemon company, so they get like 50 pc of the profits.
Pokemon Go isn't made by GameFreak. It's made by Niantic.
Good analysis. It will be interesting how Pokémon Go will do in Europe and in the Pokemon crazed land of Japan
Seems like Pokemon Go is still going strong. Guess we'll need to wait and see if the hype starts to die.
The Nintendo theme park will be added to the list of abounded amusement parks.
Thanks for the bidoof wallpaper.
Sorry your viewers can be butts and that you have to put the disclaimer that you are going to be critical of something the mainstream considers "good" right now
Love you too Geidman.
