Just finished the first mission. No combat but accomplished the objectives. Had a great time.

Me too. Only to get absolutely spanked in the 2nd mission.

11:25 Are "Talking about Charlie" and "Getting back to the World" books? I think I've heard the title "Talking about Charlie" but the context escapes me and search has failed to help so I'm still curious.
    Cheers.

No, those were just examples of terms the soldiers used.

How did you get Stingray and Keyhole? I supported the Kickstarter but only got Tunnel Rats and Born to Kill

Those were add-ons that you had to add to your pledge. They weren’t automatically included in the base pledge.

Thanks for your thoughts, I've skipped this one as not a big fan of solo-only design and got a bit put off by what I feel is a bit gamey squad setup, with very clear cut roles. I'll see if I can secure a cheap copy after the release and maybe I'll give it a try then 😀

Well, you talking about the tropes and cliches has told me all I need to know about this game. I was hoping for a more realistic portrayal rather than the Hollywood version.

Note that he mentioned lingo as cliched, not the overall storyline - but as the guy who wrote Purple Haze and did some serious research as to how Marines talked in Vietnam, let me just say this: you'd be surprised how accurate Hollywood was in depicting how these guys talked, Hamburger Hill in particular :) People sometimes forget that the typical Marine was an American teenager, using slang that from our perspective sounds as funny and as cliched (a problem compounded by the existance of three extremely well-known movies about the war: Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket) as contemporary slang will sound 60 years from now. Aside from lingo, I think that the storylines themselves are as realistic as the game allowed them to be, at any rate I hope you'll get to play PH one day and check it yourself :)

Thanks for commenting. I am definitely not saying that the storyline, the missions, the encounters, or anything depicted in the game is cheesy, cliched or unrealistic. All of the missions have been gripping and dramatic every step of the way. It’s a fantastic gaming experience in that regard, and I think is very faithful and authentic to what marines would have experienced in Vietnam over the course of many missions and patrols. My comment was definitely specific to the writing where, especially when reading the intro for the first mission, it felt like every single line was something right out of a bad screenplay, an over-the-top representation of “the Vietnam experience.” And, to be fair, the game was never presented as some sort of dry simulation of squad warfare in Vietnam - it’s a narrative-based, story-driven, dramatic representation of Vietnam, influenced by Hollywood’s portrayal of Vietnam as well as by the history. I probably should have mentioned that there’s an extensive and commendable bibliography for the game, as well.
