I’ve always been really careful in my setup to keep my entire back as flat as possible, but noticed that a lot of great deadlifters often have slightly rounded shoulders. I understand why now.

it depends on your bodyshape. if you have long arms and short torso your strong at the bottom and dont rly have to compansate. Just because this guys is stronger this way doesnt mean that it is the right way to deadlift for everyone. straight back is usually the way to go unless your only goal is to lift as heavy as possible in this spesiffic exercicse. But if your goal is to build a strong back I would suggest straight back from the bottom. It is safer too.

Thanks for the shoutout! That mention of the arc reactor in the chest really helps me understand this better ;)

Mitch is one of the smartest, most knowledgeable strongmen ever I reckon. I bet the lineup at Arnolds 2024 are keeping their eyes on him, and Thor of course.

Very insightful video 👍🏻 Definitely going to try this technique next time I deadlift. Perhaps 315 will move a bit easier than it normally does.

@@chonkeboi Most people mention their lift online when it's impressive for the average guy, so I naturally assumed 315 kg as 3 plates (315lbs) is a warmup for many.
You could be right though, as 315kg is a lot of weight.

You say a rounded upper back is still in a neutral range, but couldn't you round it too much and go beyond that neutral range, thus putting yourself at risk of ruining your back?

Very very interesting. Practically all the material out there says to keep your back flat as a board but you’re saying it’s fine to have a rounded upper back? I’m curious to what degree, and also, what are some good cues when delineating between the flatness of the upper and lower back.
Off the top of my head I’m assuming butt out and proper intra abdominal bracing for keeping lower back straight / positioned. But it kind of seems that all you have to worry about for upper back is simply getting your hands to the bar in the shortest distance possible? More or less.
In my head this feels wrong, but I know with heavy deadlifts oftentimes that’s what happens to my upper back regardless of how well I’ve braced or flattened it all.
    Insane video. Thank you.

You can't learn how to lift with google. you need to have an experienced coach or lifter be hands on with you because every nubie messes up in their own way.

@@abso1773 I've been lifting since 1998, been training people for 15 years, I wasn't making a suggestion, it's a fact. Reason young lifters technique is so bad nowadays is they think they know far more than they do. I could find about a dozen things your doing wrong in any given lift, not because I'm a superior person but because I have superior knowledge and experience on this particular topic than you do. The opportunity to learn should excite you, but that statement probably you found insulting. That will hold you back.

The problem is rounding under load. You can lift with a rounded back as long as it's supported under load. Jf Caron is one of the best deadlifters and his thoracic spine is super rounded.

@@bdegrds but what youre saying is wrong. youre right they do overestimate their abilities and knowledge yes, but the only way you cannot learn from google is if you stop researching.
tbf after writing that i came to the realization that that requires intelligence which most of the people do not possess.

So is that one of the reasons so many strongmen like to pull the deadlift bar towards them when lifting?? I always noticed Hafthor does this almost religiously. I never understood it.

    • @volterslam664
      @volterslam664 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is more because most strongman can't breathe well while setting up for deadlift thanks to their size (and sometimes suit) and wrapping straps around the bar takes a while. Rolling the bar outwards creates a moment to breathe and brace.
