  • A Client reached out wanting a Selena-inspired jumpsuit in leather and when quoted said $150 for a custom leather jumpsuit was expensive.

No way. Value your years of learning and experience and then an hourly rate for your time. There are very few tailors, seamstresses around. My daughter worked at a high end men’s clothing store and the tailor was an elderly man. He told me that it was a skill that was handed down by generations and now they are encouraging their children to get college degrees. You have a skill that is disappearing.

This is spot on. New business owners want the customers so badly that they’ll undercharge for services, and customers know it, so they’ll treat the provider like rubbish and try to nickel and dime the provider, like this customer did to Monde. That customer knew full well that Monde was undercharging, and she was taking advantage of her naivety.

      1. I didn't want to be stuck with their fabric.
      2. if the size didn't fit me, what am I going to do with this garment? Sell a custom-made garment to somebody else.
      3. I wanted to be rid of the customer so we had a marriage. I owe them and they owed me.
I never got stuck by a customer that didn't pick up or pay in full. It's a learning lesson. It really is. You are smarter and wiser now and this would never happen again.

I’m Muslim and I wear abayas, basically a long very simple ample black dress. I pay a good quality abaya around 100$ CAD.
Now I’m taking sewing classes. One of my goals was to learn to make them in order to add some details that I can’t find on the market, especially because I too am very tall.
It would cost me more, only in fabric to make the abaya myself.
You are a dedicated, very helpful and kind person. I can see that being of service is something that lift your spirit. It sucks that you had to stop doing that can be very interesting because people don’t behave respectfully.

I have plants that took 20+ years to grow and nurture, or ones that I invested a lot of energy and resources into like orchids. These plants are like well-cared for pets, and people have the nerve to offer me $20 on a $300-400 price tag. I gently tell them that they can find plants at Home Depot in their price range. I’m not being rude, I just want to align them with what their wallet can handle.

More more more. Leather is not a consistent fabric. It will have thinner/thicker areas and natural flaws. A typical pants suit is about 4 yards of material. And if I was entering this challenge, I’d run about 6 yards of leather to be able to lay out to avoid flaws, uneven edges, and other joys of working with a unique piece of material. Then lets talk about all the extra needles that will get broken on the machine…and towel to wipe off the sweat of working with a much harder material.

Always get a 50% deposit on labor. Let the client know that the cost of fabric, notions, etc., depends on what they select (give them a cost estimate). The cost of materials must be paid for once the sample is complete (unless the client brings their own fabric), and I'm ready to start the final garment. The labor balance is due when the client picks up the final garment. Never, and I mean never, start a project without getting at least a 50% deposit. Always be clear with a client, from the beginning, the costs involved with their garment. I love your channel!

Know your worth. You have shown us amazing examples of your work.
    1. How much is your time worth per hour?
    2. How much are materials? Include a markup for going out and purchasing the fabric.
    3. If a customer cannot come in for measurements, they go to the back of the line.
    4. Make them pay half up front. (Enough to cover the cost of materials) If they scoff, then they are not used to custom made, and the expense involved.
    5. If they miss appointments for fittings, stop working on the garment. If it is not important to them, then it shouldn't be a priority for you.
    6. If you provide an invoice, include the cost of missed appointments.

OMG, I have been sewing since I was 12 and I'm 66 now. I have never gotten paid enough for the time and effort it takes to make a garment. People who do not sew has no idea what you put into making a garment. The first thing would depend on how much the material costs. I cannot tell you how many chior robes, chior dresses and usher board suits I have made over the years. I commend you for doing alterations! I hate to do them, if I make a new pattern and didn't do the measurements right, I will just give it to someone else that I know it will fit. You do such a wonderful job with alterations, yours are seamless and looks like that is how the garment was made from the start. I also made my prom dress in 11th grade in my sewing class. That was in 1975 and we did not have social media and did not know it was such a big deal.

I started doing embroidery commissions over the winter because money was tight. I went to my friends in this craft group first, and one of them took me up on it. I costed the materials, the patterns she wanted, the shipping, and estimated at (UK) minimum wage what it would be. I thought it would end up being like, £60-90 or something. Ohhhh no. It was more like £160. I set a timer on my phone for when I was working on it so I could keep exact track of the hours, and I actually exceeded them in the end (didn't charge her more though because it wasn't what we'd agreed).
It was a lesson learnt. Custom work COSTS.

You were right in letting her know what reality looks like and how much it costs. I’m sure you now know (since you no longer do custom outfits) not to give a project any consideration without measurements and deposit. So glad you can laugh at a learned life lesson and use it for an entertaining story time. Thank you for sharing.

My husband and I had a sheet metal business. Similar things happened because he was so trusting. We needed a signed contract and a downpayment. The only ones we had trouble with were the ones that didn't make the downpayment or said just invoice me. He learned his lesson the hard way.

    • @krisdiane
      @krisdiane 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yeah, unfortunately some people are terrible. My husband used to do landscaping, and by the end of that we were having people sign a contract up front saying that they understood his rate and signing off on an invoice every day for the materials and work done. Prior to the contract we had one guy refuse to pay at the end - he said that the deposit was more than enough (it didn't even cover the plants my husband had already put in his ground) - and one colorful old woman called the police on us because she believed that $20/hour was too high and that the law should know what we were up to.
Behind every small business contract is a customer that got their job done for free.

Monde, your time and talent are not to be wasted. I would say during the first consultation, give a rough estimate for labor FITTING (1st and 2nd; additional charges for changes after the fabric is cut and/or sewn) CONSTRUCTION (sewing) and FINISHING (Final fitting may be included in price, so long as customer has no changes) plus MATERIALS (sourcing leather) and NOTIONS/SUPPLIES If she doesn't like it, she can stop there. If she proceeds, give her a small credit for not wasting your consultation time. Sheesh! She was in the hands of greatness and didn't even know it.

As for what you could have done differently, my goodness, you've already pointed out the red flags AND you know your worth
The customer should have paid for ALL the material, even what was not used, because there is always waste; she should have covered your time for sourcing the fabric, laying out the design, time spent trying to communicate with her, actual time spent making and altering the garment, all shipping costs, and a bonus for a job well done.

I am a graphic designer and artist and the same thing happens in my industry as well. If clients don’t know how to do what you do, they think you can just press a magic button and as a result they don’t think they should have to pay a fair price for your services. Thank you for sharing your story so others don’t fall prey to situations like these. When we undercharge, clients think everyone should give away their services for less, and that’s not fair to those making their living doing this.

You are soooo talented. I just bought a dress from a designer from West Africa. She wanted to charge me a crazy price. So, out of respect, I asked the other sisters. Each said her prices were way out of line. Which is way only two other sisters bought from her. Because I wanted to encourage her, I was advised to negotiate with her. When I did, she was so happy and so was I. Sometimes, folks want to make fast money without regard to the reasonable price of the work. But as far as you...BOY I wish I knew you back then. I would have bought you the leather material, all the buttons, thread etc plus threw in a big tip at that price. How dare she...lol Keep up the great work!!!!!
