My daughter created a custom piece of art for someone. She worked on it for nearly 3 months. When she was finally finished, the client said she changed her mind and only wanted to pay $40, not the agreed upon price of $250. Material costs were $100. Fortunately, someone else offered her $400 for it. But now she gets half up front plus the cost of materials. People don't realize how much work goes into custom work.
I have been a designer for over 20 years. This type of customer is very common and you hit the nail on the head when you said “manipulation”. It is a technique they try all the time to get their way. They use it to get to you and then you get either stuck financially or you look like you lack compassion. You gave zero shade in your message and video. You were very honest and you posted this which I consider as a wide spread education for her and other customers that attempt to come at you this way. You get an A+ from me. Continue doing an amazing job.
Same. Why do people think that “threat” is valid or really will work? In a different setting of retail, people try this threat “ well I will just have to shop elsewhere or I am never shopping here again. It’s those types you honestly are happy that they shop elsewhere and cause trouble there. Trouble is they never go somewhere else. They really get angry when you tell them ok if they want to go somewhere else. Or mention that you are not forcing them to buy the article. They are free to do whatever they feel they need to.

I've been sewing for 40+ years and i have zero tolerance for non-sewers trying to tell seamstreees what they should charge or how to value their time. I'm thankful for what sewing has given me, the ability to stand up for myself and my talent and give a firm NO without any explanation. People truly believe that you should freely make your talent/time/skills available to them. Your post was not shady and she was definitely trying to manipulate you.
For this very reason, I got out of the business! I couldn’t take the manipulation and being compared to the prices at Walmart. I got stiffed by clients I created beautiful prom dresses for…after that situation I totally got out of the business. I absolutely loved it. I sew for fun and a hobby only…never again for anyone else. I do make gifts for friends and family.
I was doing simple alterations for friends but finally said no more. I live where I would have to drive 15 or more miles to get supplies for a particular repair or alteration, plus what I spent on those supplies, gas, and my time. They never paid, but bought me "gifts" I did not need or want. Of course I never told them that, but I felt taken advantage of.
For real! My grandmother was a pro seamstress, she was phenomenal. I took TEN years of sewing classes as a kid, my peers could knock off Gunne Sax (via legal patterns from the brand, I should add), I was still making tunics. It is extremely difficult work, esp to do quickly, and requires some exceptional mental skills. It's a fairly commonly developed skill, so there are people worldwide who just whip us up clothes, but let me tell you, most of us are TERRIBLE. We need seamstresses, it's such hard work, stop running them off people!! I knew a lady who quit alterations to go make factory luggage because it paid better & had great equipment. She just got burned out on actually caring when people would just ghost her, get rude, or dither about what are actually insanely reasonable prices for highly technical skills. You try even threading a machine, tell me how easy it is....
I'm a costume artist who drafts my own patterns of historical gowns and hats for which there are no existing patterns. I feel your pain. I once made a Tudor costume for myself where the materials alone cost about $400. And I was offered $100 for it. She was angry when I told her to add about $3,000 to that offer but the faux jewelry and fan would not be included. She told me she could probably find it at Walmart. Good luck with that, I told her.
Hi I used to make costumes for a Cape Town company when I just finished my studies and my mentor had 25 years experience as a costumier. I learned more from her than from the college I went to. Total different to 'normal' clothes.
Historically, dressmakers and seamstresses have been paid poorly and unfairly for work that is very time-consuming, tiring, and detailed. My grandmother is one of these women. Thank you for speaking out and standing your ground on this issue-keep doing what you're doing!
@@MondesThreadsDickens did a good job of highlighting the plight of seamstresses in the pre-Singer days in _Nicholas Nickleby._ When Nicholas's sister Kate takes work as a seamstress, we see the bad working conditions, the abuse, and the danger of sexual harassment and seduction (read: rape) by customers and employers. It was a horrible, destructive, extremely poorly-paid job. In other words, it was women's work.
Facts. When I was younger, I thought it was cheaper to get something made. Til I started sewing n realized the actual cost of quality fabric. And then all the materials!!!!!! Not even including the time. Seamstresses, dress makers, designers, sewists, tailors, all need reparations!!!!!!!
BINGO! It fits the bigger historical trend of undervaluing "women's" work. This could be why teachers are still underpaid to this day. Notice how cooks and chefs have this air of prestige today, but really only ever since a man (Escoffier) codified the organisation in a professional kitchen. People forgot that the female cooks who used to make daily feasts in castles and palaces were professional cooks too. Sewing is just as time consuming as car tuning and it should be acknowledged.
@@DizzyBusy It's just as time consuming, and just as technically demanding, in its way. You have to have a lot of knowledge about fabrics, pattern-making, sewing techniques, etc. But yeah -- women's work.
I'm with Monde on this one. As to the original prom-dress request: I agree that this person is not naive, however old she is. She found her way to a very expensive designer. Then she looked for a cheaper knock off. She knew enough to know the knock-off would NOT look like the original. That's why she's asking Monde to make it as a custom order. That is not a naive shopper!! Her first approach is to flatter Monde, twice, although she puts very little thought into the flattery. Next, she knows Monde well enough to know that she preaches against buying designer knock-off dresses, so she tries to use this knowledge to manipulate Monde into making her a dress that she KNOWS costs far more to make than she's got to spend. How do we know she know this? Because she asks Monde to "make an exception" in her case, i.e.: make a dress for a whole lot less than it actually costs. And finally, she threatens to buy the knock-off dress if Monde doesn't do what she wants. I think Monde handled it in a very professional way. And as to the lengthy commenter, I'd have just ignored that, but Monde is nicer than I am.
If I were here I wouldn’t even have replied to that girl, the audacity to even ask that🤦🏽♀️. She was fully aware of her actions. That’s the kind of client you don’t even want if they had the money.

A lot of clients need to hear this and the young lady was old enough that she was trying to run a scam looking for a cheap way out and your expense so old enough to hear the truth. This reminds me of the time a cousin of my husband's said that if my husband would not give up his rights to a family house, that this cousin would be forced to get a job so he could afford to pay rent....The only tears we shed were those of helpless laughter. I laughed so hard that I had to cross my legs.

I'm the daughter of a seamstress, and that person, as well as the one making the comment, are out of line. First, she was asking you to plagiarize the dress for her. Second, she was reducing you and your talent to whatever she felt "fair" without knowing what it entails. I understand why people you shouldn't have taken the time to ad-dress it, (I got what you meant), but I think it was necessary to stop similar requests in the future as well as educate potential customers. I had seen some of your work before, but I just started following you after I myself, got in the conundrum of having to alter my daughter and a friend's daughter prom dresses, I almost lose my mind! That reminded me of why my mother always refused to make any alterations or mendings (I hope that's the right word for fixing clothing, in english) , the dressfor the other girl had a big train and beads and tull in the seam and I didn't want to cut it off as it cost her almost $700! And she was just days from prom when I was trying to figure out how to do it without cutting it. At the end, I had to cut it and use my sewing machine for the hem.
Why girl do you have to waste your time explaining why you won't do a $2,500 dress for $500? This is insulting to you as a business woman and an alterationist.
I had an outfit made many years ago. When I saw the detail work and quality of the work, I immediately paid her twice of the agreed cost. She under bidded the project. Custom work requires custom payment. Respect the craft.
I've just started watching your alteration shorts. I learned to sew as a teen, worked in alterations, created garments from patterns for family and even personal clients, and created costumes for the stage. I moved on to many other fields but I never forgot how little people wanted to pay. "I can buy this rayon dress for $X at Walmart - can you make it out of cotton poplin for less?" Uh, no??? How can I buy quality material, pretreat that fabric, cut, construct (with finished edges), fit and sell a garment to you for LESS than the price of the fabric alone??? That's like saying "I can buy 2 hamburgers from McDonalds for $4 - can you supply me with 2 steak dinners for less?" Customer knows the steaks alone would cost her $6 raw at the grocers, does she think I have a magic wand and can buy them for pennies somewhere? Monde you are extremely talented and very fair. Of all that you shared, the ONLY comment you made to the potential client that might be misconstrued as shade was "you go on right ahead and let me know if you need alterations" when she threatened to buy from the knock off site; rather than something like: "I understand your decision." BUT after her attempted manipulation, I think you can be forgiven for only being 75% professional rather than 100% IN ONE SENTENCE! Hat's off to you Mondo! You are amazingly talented and your videos are awesome! Wishing you many years of continued success - you deserve it!
Plus, as MondeThreads mentioned, all you know about an online encounter is what they choose to tell you, which may or may not be true. This "teenager" who wants a "prom dress" could well be an adult who wants an evening gown. The only thing we know for sure is they don't want to pay the going price. And it's the going price for a reason.

I made my own prom dress and then wedding dress (thank you, mom and aunt for teaching me to sew) in the early 1970s. Doing it myself saved a bunch of money, but the labor would have made both $$$$.

I once found a red, white & blue wedding gown for $3,500. My mom and I made it and added a halter and bow in the back for my 11 year old’s pageant. I also seed beaded the stripes. It costed around $200, but I would never have made it for a client for less than $2,000. You are 100% correct in addressing this post. Your time, expertise and knowledge are important… as well as your comfort level. If you prefer alterations, that’s what you should follow.
When I was a teenager, I knew I'd never find a dress for prom that fit and looked good. So, I learned to sew. I made my dress, it looked good. End of story. Anyone old enough to be going to prom is not a child. Bottom line, anyone who thinks they can get a $2500 dress for $500 is an idiot. I found your videos last night and watched in fascination for hours. Your alterations are a miracle. Keep up the good work!
I can't stand when folks do this. Always trying to get the most for least and then get mad when you tell them no or "I don't do that." I wish they would pay attention and just cut the foolishness.
I normally do not comment on things online, but am compelled due to this particular situation. I’m not a professional seamstress but have been put in awkward situations because family and friends knew I made most of my own clothes. I learned by watching my mother and simply developed such a love for sewing. I really think people really have unrealistic expectations and believe you can preform miracles with fabric. I can’t but YOU DO! To this day, I lost what I thought were good friends because of demands placed on me and simply stopped sewing for a long time. I look for your postings and cannot believe how you transform not messes into something attractively wearable. You have a great sense of humor and are a beautiful soul. Don’t change!!!

Biggest issue seems to be Extremely OBESE ladies trying to pour themselves into a vision of a gown that is far too small. Tiny. Then, their shape is the absolute opposite of the model shown. But they feel being trussed up and crammed into a casing is not noted. Baffling

I am completely with you on this. I don't offer my services professionally but I sew, knit and crochet and repair all of those things. The number of people that ask me to do ridiculous things for nothing (or next to no money) is astounding.Craft people/artisan's work is GROSSLY under paid and undervalued. And the sharks smell that blood in the water. EXCELLENT work standing up for yourself.
I have seen a number of your videos, and I have only seen you act in a professional manner. I have been sewing for over 60 years, and doing alterations, especially on formalwear is HARD. I think the skills that you bring to alterations work are amazing! You have worked miracles on some of those dresses, and your clients could be happy with how they looked.

Same here....ALWAYS professional. And, we DO need critical thinking to increase. Folks today, and mostly women......want "only good things" said to them, and don't believe that anyone should say ANYTHING negative that they don't like. THAT isn't realistic in the least. We MUST have reasonable speech and tell the truth. Otherwise we're only LYING, so that girls feelings don't get ruffled in any way. Actually, it's very selfish to believe that you deserve to only have "nice", and nothing truthful or realistic. We HAVE to look at life from different angles, and be ABLE TO SAY THESE THINGS. And, I've learned that most of the time, the women who complain about things the most, are the ones who are guilty of the very behavior that is being discussed, (and its negative and poor behaviors)
IKR! Doing alterations to the extent that she does them is a unique skill. I used to do dressmaking and I have to admit that I was a very talented seamstress and designer but boy when it came to any fittings that were out of the ordinary I would find myself in a bind.
Monde you are not rude, you are just real! Your alterations literally make peoples' dream comes true and it seems like all your clients are sooo happy to be able to actually wear their dresses! Everyone knows "what I ordered, what I got" they just need to do a little research about where they buy dresses from. And no one needs a $500 prom dress, there are pretty dresses for $100 out there if someone doesn't have a bigger budget. Even the idea of "the body doesn't come with the dress." This is very true! And just like wedding dresses, it's better to get a bigger size and alter to be smaller, bc then all the fabric one needs is available. I enjoy your videos so much, keep doing your thing!
Let me get this straight, you had comments complaining that your “reality check” hurt this girl’s feelings? SMH. Champagne taste, with a beer pocketbook. A friend does wedding alterations. She will not do the line of functional itty bitty buttons down the back, which has disappointed some brides. She has to educate them that the labor involved to do them properly is simply cost prohibitive. They have no clue. Her suggestion is, if the bride has a relative who is skilled, they might do it as a labor of love but…

Much like people turning down a house with a perfect floor plan because they don’t like the paint, women can sometimes get tied to a certain look making the dress perfect, rather than any dress enhancing them.
I support you 100%, you weren't shady or unprofessional at all. The "client" was trying to pull a fast one and devaluing your work, which is not OK. You weren't shady in any way.
I’m a jeweler and have run into the same issues at times. One ding dong asked me to set a piece of lapis ( he’d been misinformed the lapis was worth $2,000, HA! Maybe $250) that was in an old silver bracelet. I gave him a quote and he tried to lowball me by saying I could melt the silver in the bracelet. I patiently tried to explain that the cost of my labor to melt, refine, and roll out the silver would make it cost MORE. He was greedy. And thought he could make a tidy profit off me. I wish schools still taught home ec, sewing, woodworking, car maintenance, etc. You’re a saint to deal with these people so patiently. And you were very fair and firm in this case.
My grandmother was a dressmaker and a seamstress. Both of my daughters are now seamstresses and dressmakers. I love watching your alterations and the education that you share. You have our respect and we love you. Keep doing what you do ❤
Even if she's a kid, there's nothing wrong with giving her a reality check. You were very professional in your response. And sharing it was hopefully educational to others. They see those cheap knock off sites and get unrealistic expectations of what things cost.
At 70 I have lost my patience, I no longer do custom dresses. The Cost is a struggle these days and I longer do extreme alterations. In the last few years I have turned down more work. It was many years of experience to be able to do these things and I do not feel any recognition for my skills when they offer to pay so little
That is such a shame. I'm a beginning sewist and appreciate the time it takes even for the simple projects I'm doing. I wish more people would respect creator's work and time.
The labor alone to custom sew that dress would be unending! I see countless hours of hand stitching. Not to mention, finding fabric and pearls to replicate that look, if even possible, would be unbelievably costly. These young girls know full well what high end fashion costs, but social media is full of videos promoting ’dupes,’ so people think they can get designer look-a-like goods for bargain prices. Keep doing what you do! Your education is invaluable, especially for the non-seamstresses in your audience. You weren’t rude or unkind. Being honest and providing good counsel is never wrong.

Hello from Cape Town South Africa. I call myself a dressmaker and have been doing this for 48 years. I did study dress designing and worked under a mentor that teach me so much. Through the years I have clients that I have made their wedding dresses and now have made their daughters prom dresses or wedding dresses. By the way we call it matric farewell dresses not prom but it is the same. I too get many requests for designer dresses and tight budgets. You actually was quite right in educating that girl on the cost of her prom dress. I too believe that my talent I got from God is sewing and I love my work. I need to be happy with every dress I make. Too many girls and brides have such high expectations but not the budget. I love the alterations that you do and I believe you can learn something new every day. I love watching your videos as I can pick up some tips. I don't think many people actually realise what a skill it is to do alterations or to construct some of these designs. God bless you ❤

This happened to me when l did some sewing for people ...they don't understand the process and time involved ....then they tell you they can buy it elsewhere for half the price.I didn't do this for too long.😮
I'm not a professional seamstress by any means but I do have a good amount of experience in pattern/dress making. There have been so many occasions where friends would ask me of I could make something for them if they "pay for the cost of materials". For example, someone asked if I could make him a kilt if he bought the fabric. I had to explain to him that a kilt is VERY labor intensive and it would require several days of work. He kept pushing but eventually he gave up. I'm willing to help friends out but I don't work for free!
I am a quilter and I have the same experience. I have often been asked to make a quilt just for the costs of the material or even lower. They want a 100% hand sewn quilt with extensive quilting for next to nothing. "But you must have some left over fabric I can buy at a reduced price". "But you like to sew so why can't t you give me a quilt with elaborate hand quilting" or the best one "I thought you were my friend". When I decline to give them what they want they get angry. I have had to terminate friendships due to the perpetual request for quilts at a reduced price or even for free. I stiĺl make quilts but I give them to charity to beaten up women and children in rescue centres. (I live in Europe). I also give them to handicapped people and people with severe illnesses but I do not sell them or give them to entitled people.

They were never really your friend. I always want to respond with: "Sure, I'll make you a quilt for the cost of materials, and next year when I sell my house, you can be my agent, for free, right?" (Or whatever they do as a job.)

There have been very few people who I have been inspired to produce for. I can imagine it would be even harder when they want it to have a certain scheme or pattern.

Monde, I was a trained seamstress for over 30 years. My specialty areas were wedding fashions and my favorite little girls' dresses. One has to LOVE SEWING for the public to remain in it for any length of time. I have made clothing out of RECYCLED fabrics that had been used for bedding, window curtains as well as upcycled hand-me-downs. (Yep, I am an old-head) This subject matter, SweetPea, is as old as a SINGER pedal sewing machine (I have one still)! In my experience back in my day, many people wanted what they had seen in catalogs, in store windows, or ON someone else. But when it came down to costs, many, many people would challenge my price. I allowed myself (early in my seamstress venture) to be taken advantage of, but when the 💡 went off, I stood my ground. My work, like yours, was meticulously carried out, and I was not ever going to be pressured into short-changing myself again. I love what you do because I understand all that you do. I KNOW you are compassionate and empathetic with a client who has made a mistaken decision in the purchase of a garment. You keep EDUCATING and making people happy. Let the Naysayers speak WITHOUT, feeling the need to explain. The use of the time it took to try to sway that naysayer could have been used to listen to the Holy Spirit speak to you about something that really matters. I think a lot of people mistake the fact that they cannot afford custom with the entitlement that they should be able to have it anyway, because the level of work I've seen them put into creating pieces of incredible quality cannot possibly be accounted for by only a few hundred dollars. Designer pieces are designer pieces for a reason; they are difficult to make, they require unconventional techniques to create, they are expensive both in materials, time, and mental and physical labor. My mother is a bellydancer, and one of her close friends is a seamstress. Beading, fringe, custom construction; that's incredibly difficult. And a lot of people want a gentle touch when they're told their dreams are unachievable within the budget that they have, but quite frankly I truly believe, like you, that even a moment's thought would have informed them that their dreams were unachievable in the first place. They know what they're doing. Firmly believe that. Stick to your damn guns. I know you don't need me to tell you that. But you better stand up and demand your respect!! I see you!
I feel like the person that was offended by your post, was probably the same person as the one that requested the special order in the first place. Some people have absolutely no idea how much money and work go into specialty sewing. I think your response to the request was on point. I don't understand why some people cannot take NO for an answer.
My mother was a modiste and made lots of alterations. She had the same issues like you. But most of her clients were respectfull and nice.I love to see your work because I remember her. I am 68 years old and she passed away 5 years ago with 95! She worked until 80. The sound of the sewing mashine is still in my mind. It gave me such piece as a little girl. Thank you!

The fact that she chose THIS dress, she knew what she was doing. Naive young people don’t choose “Kardashian style” gowns for prom, they wish for them.
My late mother was seamstress. She bent over backwards for folks who came last minute with all sorts of stuff. And trying to lowball her, while still saying I love your work and you're so awesome this crazy thing I want should be no problem for you. So why can't you take this 150 for 500 worth of work? Hand made flashy gown for $500? Your time ALONE (not even materials) would be more than that. If she's a real "client," she's misinformed. But I agree with the conclusion you drew from your critical thinking. You were being conned. As for me? I love your work! What work? Education and alterations, of course, but also how you can save the day for beautiful clients. You are the fairy godmother! You rescue dreams so they come true for your ladies. You always portray your clients in the most positive light, while still showing us what was the underlying difficulty and how you resolved it as best you could under the circumstances. Good for you! I came upon your posts by accident and I love what you do-the alterations- and you are absolutely in your right to let someone know that you don’t do custom dresses and especially for $500. You have always been polite and respectful and considerate. You are a lovely person.
Speaking as someone who has their own business (I'm an English teacher), hearing "can you make an exception?" is always a red flag. Our prices (and rules) are what they are for a reason :)
Fellow literacy specialist here - and YES that blasted statement ". . . can you make an exception . . . " is a menace to logical thought. If an exception is made, then whatever guideline existed is no longer effective. The exception changes protocol, ethics, and fairness.
As a maker, the only "exception" I would make to my "No customs" policy was to make another stuffed animal just like something I already made, sometimes with a different color if it was in my stash. At that point, it's more preorder than anything. But otherwise, making an exception as a creator is not a good idea.
I find you to be gracious, kind, respectful, compassionate, and professional. There are some who will always find fault because they are looking for something negative to say.
And why do they invest their time being critical and unpleasant? If they had any home training they would have been told, "If you can’t say anything nice, keep your mouth closed."
Most people have been wearing clothes from mass retailers all their lives. They have no comprehension of what true garments feel like and the amount of work that goes into it. Most people can barely measure themselves. They know nothing about how clothes should fit or feel. Many people really think the dress comes with the body lol. You make magic! You help people who have made a mistake due to lack of knowledge. You make dreams come true. You take dresses that don’t fit and magically make the wearer look fabulous! Ignore the naysayers they just don’t know. They are projecting what they are thinking in their heads onto your videos. You are so kind sweet and patient in your videos. A true fairy dress-mother 👸🏾

I totally agree with you. You are exceptionally kind to all of your clients and I have never seen you shade anyone. You are extremely kind in your comments and lavish in your praise. I can tell that you genuinely feel good when you see a client light up at your alterations and making something fit them and they feel confident in it. Adding panels on the side and allowing a dress to close and look pretty on someone who has an ill-fitting dress makes them feel so good about themselves that you can see them glow after you finish your alterations. I really like your alteration work, and you very often add embellishments and improvements to dresses that fall short of glory. Often these dresses are bought from knock-off sites, and that’s on the client, not you. You, however, make the best of the situation, while educating the viewers why it’s best not to get into this situation in the first place. Your alteration work is top-notch, as is your customer service and public education. Keep up the good work. You make all of your customers look and feel great.
Your post today nudged me to subscribe! As I see it, the young lady who loves your work has absolutely no concept of the reality of custom work, proprietary licence, the cost of fabrics , Integrity, much less even the basic concept of doing alterations. The lack of her maturity is reflected in her attempt to dangle a few dollars in front of you to get you to change your mind, then to ‘threaten’ to go ahead and order the cheap knockoff …. Sadly this lack, in society today goes well beyond high school graduates…. I do believe that you are providing women , both young and old , a service , by educating them on what is quality and what that costs; showing how websites can be deceiving; that you get what you pay for in most things in life. Your alterations are creative and respectful of the client. But it was your explanation that you are a purposeful Christian that made me understand your motivation in coming to the ‘rescue’ of your clients! Monde, the sad truth is that some people go life looking for something to be offended by. The person who made the long, rambling, accusatory post is likely one of those people. Please do not let that person dim your light. I enjoy your videos, and appreciate the craftsmanship I’ve seen in your alterations. Some of them are almost total makeovers when you are done. I think that you do a very good job of educating your viewers. And you definitely advise us to buy the right size, stay away from questionable sites. Sometimes people just make poor choices 🤷🏼♀️. But at least there are people like you to help them when they do!
People, this lady is very good and absolutely does not try to embarrass anyone. One thing I learned from Mondes Treads is, she has the giggles when she speaks! If she embarrassed anyone, she should tell them to get the right size, but she doesn't. She's a great seamstress and teacher. 😊
I have the utmost respect for you. I have always found that it is easier to make garments from scratch than doing alterations. I also believe that people who don't sew don't realize the cost of materials and/or the amount of time and skill required to do a professional job. Love your content!
Refusing a service is not disrespect, but the hallmark of a skilled professional. There are easier ways to make money. You love your work which is why you hold yourself to a certain standard. That necessitates holding a client to that standard. I have the utmost respect for the work you do. I know I would not be able to tolerate the absurd expectations I've seen in so many of your clients. It disgusts me to think some do not comprehend the value you provide. So many women have some impossible dream in their head and you deal with the reality. It is astonishing how often you make their dream come true.

The commenter was well triggered indeed and she was equally as out of order as the potential client because if they "love your work" they should know that you are an alterations specialist, who is constantly educating people on what not to do.
This is a prime example of you can't please all the people all the time. I am sure I am not by myself when I say from my perspective you are the consummate professional. And as an amateur sewer myself, I can confirm that people want you to do the most for the least and that our talent of sewing should be at their beck and call, at their price, on their time , whenever. I don't see anything wrong in what you said. You were very professional and polite about what you can do. That dress would take alot of time to make it custom....and fabric is not cheap. Labour isn't cheap. Time is money. I love your videos! You are very respectful to all your clients. ❤❤❤
I agree with you entirely, and you explained it clearly. These kids don't understand that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. I've been a seamstress for many years, and it always happens that folks think sewing is easy. They need to understand the price of quality yards of fabrics and that all the notions required for the project are very expensive. Also, if you use a store-purchased pattern, the pattern cost is rather pricy, or if you're making your own, it's costly for a muslin. You still need to start the project, and the client now wants to negotiate your fee because of the large sum of money they have spent already. Been there and done that, and I, too, limit any custom orders I take, which are few and far between. I love your channel, by the way, and have learned a trick or two from you. Thanks.
Living online for more time than young people spend on their studies makes me glad I’m 70 and don’t have to succumb to the pressure to keep up with the Kardashians or Beyonce or their favorite TH-cam influencers. To look beautiful takes an inordinate amount of time and money. These famous people have personal trainers, wear custom made hairpieces applied by hairdressers they fly in from New York or LA, go to the best plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills and eat organic plant based food. They don’t shop online for their clothes.
You’ll be making a muslin either way. Very few people can get away with needing only minor alterations to a pattern. For me personally, it’s a full blown surgery, which is why I gave up on commercial patterns. I can’t justify spending that much time altering each pattern and making 3-6 mock-ups.
When I heard you read the first couple of lines. My first thought was she was trying to manipulate you with praise on “I love your work” I had think back on everything I’ve watched. You only fix dressed. Then for her to say “I’ll have to order it.” That was a slip up. You’ll be blessed for telling this story and helping someone younger with this one. Be blessed and stay safe.

I think it's great that you stand up to critics and show them that you know very well who is innocent and who just wants to take advantage of you. I designed dresses MANY years ago and was always asked by friends and family to help them with a sewing project. Would I throw together a dress for them or make some curtains? Sounds easy enough, but all designing and sewing is time-consuming. People don't realize...and the work that YOU do is extraordinary. You did a great job educating her and the public.
My heart goes out to you. I am in the UK. I do alterations not as a business but because l love sewing and have been sewing for over 60 years. I take on work that l should say no too. But l have empathy and the alterations end up costing me. Your post is not an insult to the customer, you are being honest with her and you owe nobody an explanation. TBH? I offered a seamstress $500 to make me a custom dress ( but NOT this fancy!!) A simpler A line non-embellished midi 1950's style) wedding dress and she didn't even ANSWER my inquiry! 😆 She totally shunned me, as she should have. I felt the shame! I learned my lesson! I think of her every time I watch your channel.
I think she could at least answer... :) I once asked a venue, offering ridiculously low price. I kinda understood why they didn't respond, still it would be helpful, if they just let me know "sorry, we take orders starting with X euros".

You just popped up in my recommended list and I've watched 8 minutes. And 5 minutes of that was getting to my PC to give you a comment. BRAVO GIRL!!!!! People think they can have anything they want no matter who gets cheated. I am my own personal tailor. I learned from a 3rd generation seamstress. I was so fortunate and cherish everything that my dear friend has taught me. I of course moved forward and taught her and gave her embroidery machines. Her last years of sewing I was able to give her a top of line sewing/embroidery machines for she deserved to have a little bit of luxury and opulence in her life. I do not do alterations. When a zipper goes out in a pair of my slacks, it's the opportunity to make a new pair of slacks. In 30 years I've replaced maybe 2 zippers in my slacks for I loved them and wore them out because I couldn't get the original fabric to replace them. My sister one time asked me if I would replace the zipper in her husband's windbreaker for, they didn't trust the cleaners to do it. I told her to go get an estimate from them and triple the price and that would be the low-ball price I would consider replacing the zipper. Needless to say I didn't replace that zipper. I don't do alterations. I hate cheap people. And I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth either. I was constantly told "you have champagne taste on a beer pocket book budget". I'm the type of person to teach one how to fish so they can feed themself for a lifetime. Also fashion designers are artists. The consumer is asking you to steal their work. I watch all the fashion shows but I still conform it to my style of what I want to wear and what looks good on me. I don't need a Gucci splashed across my chest to feel good about myself. The entitlement, the attempted at flattery and manipulation, ugh. Good on you for standing your ground. It's not your problem that they never learnt to shop within their means.
The fact of the matter is that fast fashion has deluded people in thinking that haute couture level dresses should (and can) reasonably cost a couple hundred dollars and that isn't the case. If it were, there would be comparable outfits in every local formal apparel shop. Half the time the raw materials of the desired outfits cost more than the budget, let alone the time it takes to make a pattern from nothing or franken-piecing a bodice from one gown, the sleeves of another, to a skirt from another. Making a quick mockup to ensure the design is right before cutting into the expensive fabric...it's a process. I can't sew to save my life, but I've watched enough project runway and have had enough garments custom made to know that.
I'm so happy you're showing what it means to have your own business for other women and especially young girls! We're taught to be pleasant and sweet but in business and any career people will take what they can and it doesn't pay to be a doormat. You're beyond reasonable and classy in the way you handle these situations!

I think your original post was just fine. You explained that you couldn't do what was being asked of you and gave reasons why. And this post is also fine. Others have already commented on how much time and effort goes into sewing. With that, i wholeheartedly agree. But people with no sewing experience don't realize this. No seamstress can just "whip out" a formal dress. And quality materials are not inexpensive. You provide so much and you do it well. Thank you for your honesty.❤

I recently found you on Instagram, I love watching you explain the alterations and the before and after pictures of the gowns you fix, what draws me to your page is that my mother was a seamstress and she did alterations also, right up to a month before her death she was 95 yrs old. Thank you for the incredible work you do in helping women who need help with their gowns/dresses. You are awesome 🤩
My daughter created a custom piece of art for someone. She worked on it for nearly 3 months. When she was finally finished, the client said she changed her mind and only wanted to pay $40, not the agreed upon price of $250. Material costs were $100. Fortunately, someone else offered her $400 for it. But now she gets half up front plus the cost of materials. People don't realize how much work goes into custom work.
That is exactly why I don't do custom work.
People undervalue the labor of artists, whether they be painters or designers.
I live in Denmark. Everything custom made is payed fully up front and you can't return it

I have been a designer for over 20 years. This type of customer is very common and you hit the nail on the head when you said “manipulation”. It is a technique they try all the time to get their way. They use it to get to you and then you get either stuck financially or you look like you lack compassion. You gave zero shade in your message and video. You were very honest and you posted this which I consider as a wide spread education for her and other customers that attempt to come at you this way. You get an A+ from me. In a different setting of retail, people try this threat “ well I will just have to shop elsewhere or I am never shopping here again. It’s those types you honestly are happy that they shop elsewhere and cause trouble there. Trouble is they never go somewhere else. They really get angry when you tell them ok if they want to go somewhere else. Or mention that you are not forcing them to buy the article. They are free to do whatever they feel they need to.

I've been sewing for 40+ years and i have zero tolerance for non-sewers trying to tell seamstreees what they should charge or how to value their time. I'm thankful for what sewing has given me, the ability to stand up for myself and my talent and give a firm NO without any explanation. People truly believe that you should freely make your talent/time/skills available to them. Your post was not shady and she was definitely trying to manipulate you.
For this very reason, I got out of the business! I couldn’t take the manipulation and being compared to the prices at Walmart. I got stiffed by clients I created beautiful prom dresses for…after that situation I totally got out of the business. I absolutely loved it. I sew for fun and a hobby only…never again for anyone else. I do make gifts for friends and family.
I was doing simple alterations for friends but finally said no more. I live where I would have to drive 15 or more miles to get supplies for a particular repair or alteration, plus what I spent on those supplies, gas, and my time. They never paid, but bought me "gifts" I did not need or want. Of course I never told them that, but I felt taken advantage of.

For real! My grandmother was a pro seamstress, she was phenomenal. I took TEN years of sewing classes as a kid, my peers could knock off Gunne Sax (via legal patterns from the brand, I should add), I was still making tunics. It is extremely difficult work, esp to do quickly, and requires some exceptional mental skills. It's a fairly commonly developed skill, so there are people worldwide who just whip us up clothes, but let me tell you, most of us are TERRIBLE. We need seamstresses, it's such hard work, stop running them off people!! I knew a lady who quit alterations to go make factory luggage because it paid better & had great equipment. She just got burned out on actually caring when people would just ghost her, get rude, or dither about what are actually insanely reasonable prices for highly technical skills. You try even threading a machine, tell me how easy it is....

I'm a costume artist who drafts my own patterns of historical gowns and hats for which there are no existing patterns. I feel your pain. I once made a Tudor costume for myself where the materials alone cost about $400. And I was offered $100 for it. She was angry when I told her to add about $3,000 to that offer but the faux jewelry and fan would not be included. She told me she could probably find it at Walmart. Good luck with that, I told her.

Hi I used to make costumes for a Cape Town company when I just finished my studies and my mentor had 25 years experience as a costumier. I learned more from her than from the college I went to. Total different to 'normal' clothes.

@@MondesThreadsDickens did a good job of highlighting the plight of seamstresses in the pre-Singer days in _Nicholas Nickleby._ When Nicholas's sister Kate takes work as a seamstress, we see the bad working conditions, the abuse, and the danger of sexual harassment and seduction (read: rape) by customers and employers. It was a horrible, destructive, extremely poorly-paid job. In other words, it was women's work.
Facts. When I was younger, I thought it was cheaper to get something made. Til I started sewing n realized the actual cost of quality fabric. And then all the materials!!!!!! Not even including the time. Seamstresses, dress makers, designers, sewists, tailors, all need reparations!!!!!!!
BINGO! It fits the bigger historical trend of undervaluing "women's" work. This could be why teachers are still underpaid to this day. Notice how cooks and chefs have this air of prestige today, but really only ever since a man (Escoffier) codified the organisation in a professional kitchen. People forgot that the female cooks who used to make daily feasts in castles and palaces were professional cooks too.
Sewing is just as time consuming as car tuning and it should be acknowledged.

I'm with Monde on this one. As to the original prom-dress request: I agree that this person is not naive, however old she is. She found her way to a very expensive designer. Then she looked for a cheaper knock off. She knew enough to know the knock-off would NOT look like the original. That's why she's asking Monde to make it as a custom order. That is not a naive shopper!! Her first approach is to flatter Monde, twice, although she puts very little thought into the flattery. Next, she knows Monde well enough to know that she preaches against buying designer knock-off dresses, so she tries to use this knowledge to manipulate Monde into making her a dress that she KNOWS costs far more to make than she's got to spend. How do we know she know this? Because she asks Monde to "make an exception" in her case, i.e.: make a dress for a whole lot less than it actually costs. And finally, she threatens to buy the knock-off dress if Monde doesn't do what she wants. I think Monde handled it in a very professional way. And as to the lengthy commenter, I'd have just ignored that, but Monde is nicer than I am.

I'm the daughter of a seamstress, and that person, as well as the one making the comment, are out of line. First, she was asking you to plagiarize the dress for her. Second, she was reducing you and your talent to whatever she felt "fair" without knowing what it entails. I understand why people you shouldn't have taken the time to ad-dress it, (I got what you meant), but I think it was necessary to stop similar requests in the future as well as educate potential customers. I had seen some of your work before, but I just started following you after I myself, got in the conundrum of having to alter my daughter and a friend's daughter prom dresses, I almost lose my mind! That reminded me of why my mother always refused to make any alterations or mendings (I hope that's the right word for fixing clothing, in english) , the dressfor the other girl had a big train and beads and tull in the seam and I didn't want to cut it off as it cost her almost $700! And she was just days from prom when I was trying to figure out how to do it without cutting it. At the end, I had to cut it and use my sewing machine for the hem.

I had an outfit made many years ago. When I saw the detail work and quality of the work, I immediately paid her twice of the agreed cost. She under bidded the project. Custom work requires custom payment. Respect the craft.
I've just started watching your alteration shorts. I learned to sew as a teen, worked in alterations, created garments from patterns for family and even personal clients, and created costumes for the stage. I moved on to many other fields but I never forgot how little people wanted to pay. "I can buy this rayon dress for $X at Walmart - can you make it out of cotton poplin for less?" Uh, no??? How can I buy quality material, pretreat that fabric, cut, construct (with finished edges), fit and sell a garment to you for LESS than the price of the fabric alone??? That's like saying "I can buy 2 hamburgers from McDonalds for $4 - can you supply me with 2 steak dinners for less?" Customer knows the steaks alone would cost her $6 raw at the grocers, does she think I have a magic wand and can buy them for pennies somewhere? Monde you are extremely talented and very fair. Of all that you shared, the ONLY comment you made to the potential client that might be misconstrued as shade was "you go on right ahead and let me know if you need alterations" when she threatened to buy from the knock off site; rather than something like: "I understand your decision." BUT after her attempted manipulation, I think you can be forgiven for only being 75% professional rather than 100% IN ONE SENTENCE! Hat's off to you Mondo! Plus, as MondeThreads mentioned, all you know about an online encounter is what they choose to tell you, which may or may not be true. This "teenager" who wants a "prom dress" could well be an adult who wants an evening gown. The only thing we know for sure is they don't want to pay the going price. And it's the going price for a reason.

I made my own prom dress and then wedding dress (thank you, mom and aunt for teaching me to sew) in the early 1970s. Doing it myself saved a bunch of money, but the labor would have made both $$$$.

I once found a red, white & blue wedding gown for $3,500. My mom and I made it and added a halter and bow in the back for my 11 year old’s pageant. I also seed beaded the stripes. It costed around $200, but I would never have made it for a client for less than $2,000. You are 100% correct in addressing this post. Your time, expertise and knowledge are important… as well as your comfort level. If you prefer alterations, that’s what you should follow.
When I was a teenager, I knew I'd never find a dress for prom that fit and looked good. So, I learned to sew. I made my dress, it looked good. End of story. Anyone old enough to be going to prom is not a child. Bottom line, anyone who thinks they can get a $2500 dress for $500 is an idiot. I normally do not comment on things online, but am compelled due to this particular situation. I’m not a professional seamstress but have been put in awkward situations because family and friends knew I made most of my own clothes. I learned by watching my mother and simply developed such a love for sewing. I really think people really have unrealistic expectations and believe you can preform miracles with fabric. I can’t but YOU DO! To this day, I lost what I thought were good friends because of demands placed on me and simply stopped sewing for a long time. I am completely with you on this. I don't offer my services professionally but I sew, knit and crochet and repair all of those things. The number of people that ask me to do ridiculous things for nothing (or next to no money) is astounding.Craft people/artisan's work is GROSSLY under paid and undervalued. And the sharks smell that blood in the water. EXCELLENT work standing up for yourself.
I have seen a number of your videos, and I have only seen you act in a professional manner. I have been sewing for over 60 years, and doing alterations, especially on formalwear is HARD. I think the skills that you bring to alterations work are amazing! You have worked miracles on some of those dresses, and your clients could be happy with how they looked.

Same here....ALWAYS professional. And, we DO need critical thinking to increase. Folks today, and mostly women......want "only good things" said to them, and don't believe that anyone should say ANYTHING negative that they don't like. THAT isn't realistic in the least. We MUST have reasonable speech and tell the truth. Otherwise we're only LYING, so that girls feelings don't get ruffled in any way.

IKR! Doing alterations to the extent that she does them is a unique skill. I used to do dressmaking and I have to admit that I was a very talented seamstress and designer but boy when it came to any fittings that were out of the ordinary I would find myself in a bind.
Monde you are not rude, you are just real! Your alterations literally make peoples' dream comes true and it seems like all your clients are sooo happy to be able to actually wear their dresses! Everyone knows "what I ordered, what I got" they just need to do a little research about where they buy dresses from. And no one needs a $500 prom dress, there are pretty dresses for $100 out there if someone doesn't have a bigger budget. Even the idea of "the body doesn't come with the dress." This is very true! And just like wedding dresses, it's better to get a bigger size and alter to be smaller, bc then all the fabric one needs is available.

Much like people turning down a house with a perfect floor plan because they don’t like the paint, women can sometimes get tied to a certain look making the dress perfect, rather than any dress enhancing them.

I’m a jeweler and have run into the same issues at times. One ding dong asked me to set a piece of lapis ( he’d been misinformed the lapis was worth $2,000, HA! Maybe $250) that was in an old silver bracelet. I gave him a quote and he tried to lowball me by saying I could melt the silver in the bracelet. I patiently tried to explain that the cost of my labor to melt, refine, and roll out the silver would make it cost MORE.
He was greedy. And thought he could make a tidy profit off me.

At 70 I have lost my patience, I no longer do custom dresses. The Cost is a struggle these days and I longer do extreme alterations. In the last few years I have turned down more work. It was many years of experience to be able to do these things and I do not feel any recognition for my skills when they offer to pay so little

The labor alone to custom sew that dress would be unending! I see countless hours of hand stitching. Not to mention, finding fabric and pearls to replicate that look, if even possible, would be unbelievably costly. These young girls know full well what high end fashion costs, but social media is full of videos promoting ’dupes,’ so people think they can get designer look-a-like goods for bargain prices. Keep doing what you do! Your education is invaluable, especially for the non-seamstresses in your audience. You weren’t rude or unkind. Being honest and providing good counsel is never wrong.

Hello from Cape Town South Africa. I call myself a dressmaker and have been doing this for 48 years. I did study dress designing and worked under a mentor that teach me so much. Through the years I have clients that I have made their wedding dresses and now have made their daughters prom dresses or wedding dresses. By the way we call it matric farewell dresses not prom but it is the same. I too get many requests for designer dresses and tight budgets. You actually was quite right in educating that girl on the cost of her prom dress. I too believe that my talent I got from God is sewing and I love my work. I need to be happy with every dress I make. Too many girls and brides have such high expectations but not the budget. I love the alterations that you do and I believe you can learn something new every day. I love watching your videos as I can pick up some tips. I don't think many people actually realise what a skill it is to do alterations or to construct some of these designs. God bless you ❤

When I went to prom in the dark ages if a girl spent even 100 on a dress people would gasp in shock!!
I'm not a professional seamstress by any means but I do have a good amount of experience in pattern/dress making. There have been so many occasions where friends would ask me of I could make something for them if they "pay for the cost of materials". For example, someone asked if I could make him a kilt if he bought the fabric. I had to explain to him that a kilt is VERY labor intensive and it would require several days of work. He kept pushing but eventually he gave up. I'm willing to help friends out but I don't work for free!
I am a quilter and I have the same experience. I have often been asked to make a quilt just for the costs of the material or even lower. They want a 100% hand sewn quilt with extensive quilting for next to nothing. "But you must have some left over fabric I can buy at a reduced price". "But you like to sew so why can't t you give me a quilt with elaborate hand quilting" or the best one "I thought you were my friend". When I decline to give them what they want they get angry. I have had to terminate friendships due to the perpetual request for quilts at a reduced price or even for free.
I stiĺl make quilts but I give them to charity to beaten up women and children in rescue centres. (I live in Europe). I also give them to handicapped people and people with severe illnesses but I do not sell them or give them to entitled people.

Monde, I was a trained seamstress for over 30 years. My specialty areas were wedding fashions and my favorite little girls' dresses. One has to LOVE SEWING for the public to remain in it for any length of time. I have made clothing out of RECYCLED fabrics that had been used for bedding, window curtains as well as upcycled hand-me-downs. (Yep, I am an old-head) This subject matter, SweetPea, is as old as a SINGER pedal sewing machine (I have one still)! In my experience back in my day, many people wanted what they had seen in catalogs, in store windows, or ON someone else. But when it came down to costs, many, many people would challenge my price. I allowed myself (early in my seamstress venture) to be taken advantage of, but when the 💡 went off, I stood my ground. My work, like yours, was meticulously carried out, and I was not ever going to be pressured into short-changing myself again. I love what you do because I understand all that you do. I KNOW you are compassionate and empathetic with a client who has made a mistaken decision in the purchase of a garment.

I think a lot of people mistake the fact that they cannot afford custom with the entitlement that they should be able to have it anyway, because the level of work I've seen them put into creating pieces of incredible quality cannot possibly be accounted for by only a few hundred dollars. Designer pieces are designer pieces for a reason; they are difficult to make, they require unconventional techniques to create, they are expensive both in materials, time, and mental and physical labor. My mother is a bellydancer, and one of her close friends is a seamstress. Beading, fringe, custom construction; that's incredibly difficult. And a lot of people want a gentle touch when they're told their dreams are unachievable within the budget that they have, but quite frankly I truly believe, like you, that even a moment's thought would have informed them that their dreams were unachievable in the first place. They know what they're doing. Firmly believe that.
Stick to your damn guns. I know you don't need me to tell you that. But you better stand up and demand your respect!! I see you!

Speaking as someone who has their own business (I'm an English teacher), hearing "can you make an exception?" is always a red flag. Our prices (and rules) are what they are for a reason :)
Fellow literacy specialist here - and YES that blasted statement ". . . can you make an exception . . . " is a menace to logical thought. If an exception is made, then whatever guideline existed is no longer effective. The exception changes protocol, ethics, and fairness.
As a maker, the only "exception" I would make to my "No customs" policy was to make another stuffed animal just like something I already made, sometimes with a different color if it was in my stash. At that point, it's more preorder than anything. But otherwise, making an exception as a creator is not a good idea.

I totally agree with you. You are exceptionally kind to all of your clients and I have never seen you shade anyone. You are extremely kind in your comments and lavish in your praise. I can tell that you genuinely feel good when you see a client light up at your alterations and making something fit them and they feel confident in it. Adding panels on the side and allowing a dress to close and look pretty on someone who has an ill-fitting dress makes them feel so good about themselves that you can see them glow after you finish your alterations. I really like your alteration work, and you very often add embellishments and improvements to dresses that fall short of glory. Often these dresses are bought from knock-off sites, and that’s on the client, not you. You, however, make the best of the situation, while educating the viewers why it’s best not to get into this situation in the first place. Your alteration work is top-notch, as is your customer service and public education. Keep up the good work. You make all of your customers look and feel great.

Integrity, much less even the basic concept of doing alterations. Refusing a service is not disrespect, but the hallmark of a skilled professional. There are easier ways to make money. You love your work which is why you hold yourself to a certain standard. That necessitates holding a client to that standard. I have the utmost respect for the work you do. I know I would not be able to tolerate the absurd expectations I've seen in so many of your clients. It disgusts me to think some do not comprehend the value you provide. I don't see anything wrong in what you said. You were very professional and polite about what you can do. That dress would take alot of time to make it custom....and fabric is not cheap. Labour isn't cheap. Time is money. I love your videos! You are very respectful to all your clients. ❤❤❤
I agree with you entirely, and you explained it clearly. These kids don't understand that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. I've been a seamstress for many years, and it always happens that folks think sewing is easy. They need to understand the price of quality yards of fabrics and that all the notions required for the project are very expensive. Also, if you use a store-purchased pattern, the pattern cost is rather pricy, or if you're making your own, it's costly for a muslin. You still need to start the project, and the client now wants to negotiate your fee because of the large sum of money they have spent already. Been there and done that, and I, too, limit any custom orders I take, which are few and far between. I love your channel, by the way, and have learned a trick or two from you. Thanks.
Living online for more time than young people spend on their studies makes me glad I’m 70 and don’t have to succumb to the pressure to keep up with the Kardashians or Beyonce or their favorite TH-cam influencers. To look beautiful takes an inordinate amount of time and money. These famous people have personal trainers, wear custom made hairpieces applied by hairdressers they fly in from New York or LA, go to the best plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills and eat organic plant based food. They don’t shop online for their clothes.
You’ll be making a muslin either way. Very few people can get away with needing only minor alterations to a pattern. For me personally, it’s a full blown surgery, which is why I gave up on commercial patterns. I can’t justify spending that much time altering each pattern and making 3-6 mock-ups.
You have such great humor, grace and integrity. You set a great example of hearing a critique and deciding what is helpful and what is noise!

When I heard you read the first couple of lines. My first thought was she was trying to manipulate you with praise on “I love your work” I had think back on everything I’ve watched. You only fix dressed. Then for her to say “I’ll have to order it.” That was a slip up. You’ll be blessed for telling this story and helping someone younger with this one. Be blessed and stay safe.

I designed dresses MANY years ago and was always asked by friends and family to help them with a sewing project. Would I throw together a dress for them or make some curtains? Sounds easy enough, but all designing and sewing is time-consuming. People don't realize...and the work that YOU do is extraordinary. You did a great job educating her and the public.

My heart goes out to you. I am in the UK. I do alterations not as a business but because l love sewing and have been sewing for over 60 years. I take on work that l should say no too. But l have empathy and the alterations end up costing me.
Your post is not an insult to the customer, you are being honest with her and you owe nobody an explanation. Keep on doing what you do, alterations, education, and custom. With respect. ❤
TBH? I offered a seamstress $500 to make me a custom dress ( but NOT this fancy!!) A simpler A line non-embellished midi 1950's style) wedding dress and she didn't even ANSWER my inquiry! 😆 She totally shunned me, as she should have. I felt the shame! I learned my lesson! I think of her every time I watch your channel.
I think she could at least answer... :) I once asked a venue, offering ridiculously low price. I kinda understood why they didn't respond, still it would be helpful, if they just let me know "sorry, we take orders starting with X euros".

You just popped up in my recommended list and I've watched 8 minutes. And 5 minutes of that was getting to my PC to give you a comment. BRAVO GIRL!!!!! People think they can have anything they want no matter who gets cheated. I am my own personal tailor. I learned from a 3rd generation seamstress. I was so fortunate and cherish everything that my dear friend has taught me. I of course moved forward and taught her and gave her embroidery machines. Her last years of sewing I was able to give her a top of line sewing/embroidery machines for she deserved to have a little bit of luxury and opulence in her life. I do not do alterations. When a zipper goes out in a pair of my slacks, it's the opportunity to make a new pair of slacks. In 30 years I've replaced maybe 2 zippers in my slacks for I loved them and wore them out because I couldn't get the original fabric to replace them. My sister one time asked me if I would replace the zipper in her husband's windbreaker for, they didn't trust the cleaners to do it. I told her to go get an estimate from them and triple the price and that would be the low-ball price I would consider replacing the zipper. Needless to say I didn't replace that zipper. I don't do alterations. I hate cheap people. And I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth either. I was constantly told "you have champagne taste on a beer pocket book budget". I'm the type of person to teach one how to fish so they can feed themself for a lifetime. Also fashion designers are artists. The consumer is asking you to steal their work. I watch all the fashion shows but I still conform it to my style of what I want to wear and what looks good on me. I don't need a Gucci splashed across my chest to feel good about myself.

The entitlement, the attempted at flattery and manipulation, ugh. Good on you for standing your ground. It's not your problem that they never learnt to shop within their means.
The fact of the matter is that fast fashion has deluded people in thinking that haute couture level dresses should (and can) reasonably cost a couple hundred dollars and that isn't the case. If it were, there would be comparable outfits in every local formal apparel shop. Half the time the raw materials of the desired outfits cost more than the budget, let alone the time it takes to make a pattern from nothing or franken-piecing a bodice from one gown, the sleeves of another, to a skirt from another. Making a quick mockup to ensure the design is right before cutting into the expensive fabric...it's a process.
I can't sew to save my life, but I've watched enough project runway and have had enough garments custom made to know that.
I'm so happy you're showing what it means to have your own business for other women and especially young girls! We're taught to be pleasant and sweet but in business and any career people will take what they can and it doesn't pay to be a doormat. You're beyond reasonable and classy in the way you handle these situations!
You are absolutely wonderful in your work and your attitude and your explanations. I have been a seamstress all my life and I do think that many people do not understand the difference between the words “alterations “and “custom sewing/making a whole garment.”
Sweetie,, I've watched you for months now and you have gone above and beyond for people. Not once have I seen you tell a client they were dumb, stupid , misordered. or over weight . I really appreciate you and know you are doing the best for revising this items .

I think your original post was just fine. You explained that you couldn't do what was being asked of you and gave reasons why. And this post is also fine. Others have already commented on how much time and effort goes into sewing. With that, i wholeheartedly agree. But people with no sewing experience don't realize this. No seamstress can just "whip out" a formal dress. And quality materials are not inexpensive. You provide so much and you do it well. Thank you for your honesty.❤

I recently found you on Instagram, I love watching you explain the alterations and the before and after pictures of the gowns you fix, what draws me to your page is that my mother was a seamstress and she did alterations also, right up to a month before her death she was 95 yrs old.
