Using e-bike controller on Ryobi lawnmower

The motor controller failed on this Ryobi mower.
I replaced it with an e-bike controller.
I bought it on Amazon 1000 watts for about $34.
The wires needed:
Blue
Yellow
Green
These go to the electric motor
Red
Black
These are for you 40v from battery
Small red (this is for your start switch), this needs to be at 40v to turn on controller
Red
Green
Black
Throttle control
Red is +5v
Black is gnd
Green is sense
If you connect red to green it will send 5v to controller but it will over rev motor and turn off
For mine, I needed around 1.5 to 2.5 v , so I used a 10k pot.
To get this to work, I had to start out with 0 v, then turn pot to desired rpm. 2700 for normal, and 3100 for high.

Also it’s a quick press like one second or so of the button not a hold down. You will have to test each wire of the pot to figure out which one it is. This is probably what the start switch is on the handle does and might be able to even use that switch 😊

This is fascinating. I would love to c a schematic also I’m really interested on how you connected the drive assist motor. Im also in the process of trying to figure this out on my ryobi mower.

I think if you put a momentary switch normally closed on one of the potentiometer wires and when you want to start the motor with the pot turned up to the rpm you want you press the button and it tricks the controller to think it’s turned all the way down and it will start without having to touch the pot.

Maybe I could do this with the older model because mine shuts down every time I hit a path of higher grass I did not say high grass. I think my controller is on its way out. The mower didn't act like that when someone gave me the mower.. I know the motor that runs the blade is running on three phase AC. I would mount the potentiometer on the handle somewhere . I could care less if the blade keeps moving until it stops. The old days we had enough sense not to put feet or hands under the mower. When we were kids we didn't get near a running lawnmower. Somehow that's a problem now for some unknown reason.. 73
