    For those wondering, the Electrophorus was invented by Wilcke in 1762, and popularized by Volta in the following decades. Lichtenberg showed a method to use it for creating larger charges (and voltages) in the 1770s. This was adapted into a type of generator called the Nicholson Doubler in the 1780s, and this is considered the first "Influence Machine" electrostatic generator. Before this they all worked on friction using the triboelectric effect. After many iterations of improvement the Wimshurst Generator was invented in the 1880s using the same principle as Nicholson's Doubler and the Electrophorus. While there are many 'influence machine' style generators, the Wimshurst machine is the most commonly seen nowadays, and can be built as a project or purchased as a kit. I just wanted to point out that the electrophorus is connected to another popular educational aid (the Wimshurst machine) both in theory of operation and in historical development.

      @@h7opolo You are thinking of the piezoelectric effect, which indeed is due to mechanical stress. The triboelectric effect is due to electron transfer during adhesion, which contributes to a material's coefficient of friction. This effect occurs when two materials with greater and lower affinity for electrons are rubbed against each other producing a surface charge. The earliest electrostatic generators were often referred to as 'friction machines' for this reason.

      you just need a dielectric. Alessandro Volta likely used pitch or wax. Voltaire was a different fellow :)

      Actually, in a Leyden jar the electrons accumulate, aka; “are stored”, on the inner metal conductive lining of the jar. The glass or plastic dielectric is actually a non-conductive insulator which separates the inner and outer conductive surfaces, or plates, of the Leyden jar. A laden jar is basically a capacitor. And capacitors consist of two metal strips separated by a non-conductive dielectric material. The plate of higher potential, in this case the inner surface of the Leyden jar, wants to discharge and equalize that charge to the outside plate, which is often grounded, but the dielectric insulator prevents this, thus allowing the electrons to build up to high potential. Van de Graaff generators work off this theory as well.

    Good example showing electric charge in a capactor is stored in the insulator & not the conductive plates. Very often people claim electric charge in a capactor is stored in the plants and not insulator, despite this being the 21th century,

    Electrostatic charges
    When refueling , " ignition point "
    This is why Fuel Tankers ( Fuel Delivery Trucks )
    Must be careful upon commencing fuel Deliveries
    .... " To the point of the Tanker , Truck Delivering both Diesel and Petroleum ( Gas ) to the same Delivery point " ....... " Drop the Diesel ( Feed the Diesel ) First in to the correct Diesel Tank , Then your Petroleum ( Gas ) into its correct tank
    Electrostatic Charge will ignite Petroleum ( Gas ) quicker than Diesel as Diesel is a compression Fuel .

    Edit By Delivering the Diesel first the Electrostatic charge is reduced / removed / negated from the situation and thus an explosion risk is reduce / removed to a lower possibility

    This can be extrapolated even further by stating " When fueling your Petroleum ( Gas ) vehicle , make sure the nozzle is touching the car " To transfer the Electrostatic Charge to ground ( to ground the vehicle )

      Use paper plate AND PAPER Straw and paper cup. Or plastic . They are perfectly non conducting dielectric materials even glass hot glue and woden kabob skewer for the straw. All in any combination would work fine.
