Many say Rambling Man. To me, this song has always been Dickey’s masterpiece. His defining song as a member of the Allman Brothers Band and his lasting gift to us his fans. RIP brother. Thank you Dickey 🎸✌️

Agreed. Rambling Man is more of a "basic" song but In Memory is one hell of a composition. Been trying to master this on guitar for several years, it ain't easy!

It just shows you that great music doesn't need lyrics. These 6 incredibly talented musicians translate the sound from their heads to their hands and not a word is spoken. This is the finest piece of music I've ever heard in my life!

Totally agree man. That has always struck me about this, how the inspirational creation of Dickie Betts- unbelievably complex then translated into a performance that is truly hard to put words to explain or define how it consumes the listener taking them other-world.
When I first cut the album 'Live At The Fillmore' sitting in the hooch back in '71 screaming out of the Pioneer 88's, I was initially captivated by Whipping Post. Played it over and over and over again. Then one of my crew, Jerry Jordan (New Jersey) after a couple of bowls ;-> made me take greater listen to this discussing the performances in detail of each musician. Done! Became my absolute favorite of all time. Hundreds of listens latter, still my #1 listen to of all time.

WOW!!! I love this beyond words! At 69 years old, I have never grown tired of this absolute masterpiece. In high school, we did our best to cover this band, never coming close but what a voyage and no better template to follow.
It's not an easy song to cover man. Dickey is quite underrated as a guitar player I think. He is masterful along with another guy next to him, Duane. Too bad we've lost so many. I was way over bummed about Jeff Beck this week. He was another influence in my playing. I'm 68 and played since I was 9. We're in the same era obviously and appreciate the really great stuff. Long Live ABB!!!!
I’m 66 and this was the first album I’ve ever owned. This is one of the finest compositions of rock, blues and jazz ever written. An absolute masterpiece and I never get tired of listening to it!!!!

They’re Southern, that’s all you need to know…
I saw them perform this live in Detroit a few weeks before they recorded it at the Fillmore. Needless to say, I was blown away. And I also recall that the marketing term “Southern rock” hadn’t been invented yet. I frankly didn’t know where they were from, only that Duane had played on the Duane & the Dominos - oops, sorry, *Derek* & the Dominos - album Layla. I’ve since followed some “Southern rock” artists now and then, but don’t consider that the 1970-1971 ABB should be limited by that stylistic descriptor. As I believe Bill Graham said, this is simply the finest contemporary music. As good as any music - anywhere -ever was, imo.
This is the quintessential version of this song. I have been back and for through dozens and keep returning to this. I studied and performed this with a pretty decent band live and know the movements well. This is it.

Often referred to, and correctly so, as the greatest of all time.
The name of the song came from a tombstone in Rose Hill Cemetary in Macon. Dickie Betts had no idea who the lady was. He needed a name for this number, saw her headstone and the rest is rock history.

Well, I'm old enough to have heard this Liz Reed when it first came out, which I did. I grabbed my guitar and started jammin' my a$$ off and it has remained one of my favorite songs all my life. This song is one of a couple Dickey tunes that make you think you are not listening to a 'southern rock band'. The ABB had so much versatility in their music not to mention some of the greatest musicians of all time.
I always wondered if Duane had lived, would we have heard Ramblin Man, Pony Boy, Jessica, etc.? Duane played with Herbie Mann, idolized Kind of Blue, and the band rehearsed My Favorite Things in the Gatlinburg session. Would Duane have continued to explore the jazz/contemporary genre?
Would there have been "space" for Dickey to inject his love of country music that emerged in the Brothers and Sisters album that I so strongly equate with southern rock? Regardless of the answers, this band's music has touched my life for 50 years in ways I do not understand and cannot explain.

No version of the ABB ever has come close to the original lineup. They achieved Musical Nirvana for a few short years and then it was gone.
Most soothing exciting surprising challenging. Inevitably shyly shoulder shaking songs ever then you realize that there is happiness in the world. Best band ever for my simple rastes. Music nature love harmony blues jazz gospel epic solis dual drums incredible dual guitars and phenomenal bass creative harmonic interplays with hammond organand guitars....godh just another babd. Deck was amazing playing this song he wrote and DAUNE just made it that much better what a jam I was memorized listening to this song I was fourteen years old when I first was turned on to the brothers in 1970 was January of that year I never looked back I was hooked then what always amazed me was how DAUNE only was playing for ten years and he was like you would of thought this guy had been playing for 40 years I went to Carnegie hall 1971 was thanksgiving day to see them play we thought they was going to cancel the concert but they played yet you could hear the magic in the music was missing and the brothers on stage they were all sad they gave it their best a night I will never forget and they gave mushroom buttons out at the door when you came in 😮😢here just a month before DAUNE died

I remember hearing this as a teenager in the 70's. I thought it was so beautiful. That jazz flavor is something else.
Honing his craft, Duane constantly listened to Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" I can see why; The greatest jazz album of all time with chock full of improvisation clearly brought out the best in Duane.
With all the debates that have been going on for years as to who was the better guitar player, everyone misses on important point: they were friends. They each had their own touch, their own style and it's easy to tell which one is playing, especially on this song. I'll miss you, Dickey.

It was around 1967. I wanted to know who would be playing this weekend, so I called the Fillmore. The voice said “Fillmore”-no mistaking that voice(OMG, that’s Bill Graham)..er ah, “who appearing this weekend?” The answer from Mr. Graham “Jimi Hendrix and Gabor Zsabo”. Me-“is that all?”. “That’s enough”, said Mr. Graham. Love it!
My friend turned me on to the Allman Brothers live it to Fillmore East I think 40 years ago! This is gorgeous!

Kind of ironic but was feeling sad learning about Dickey but then listened to this and all I could do was groove and smile to it....when it ended I then felt sad again knowing that we will never see this kind of greatness again

I love how they used the music from the Filmore East album and superimposed this performance of the band over it. It gives the illusion that they are actually playing it this time... I love this version but they obvioulsy couldn't find the video for it so they did the best they could. Thanks it is definitlely more interesting then watching an album cover!!

I'm not even sure the video syncs with ER..could be a completely different song. I've watched this for years and still can't figure. No matter. It's the music that counts. This is actually the live from the 71 Fillmore sessions. Duane never sounds the same twice.

The first time I saw them was in '69 in Sarasota summer break I was fourteen. Already a seasoned concert rat. I and everyone else was in their feet in complete happy disbelief as to what we were hearing. They just overwhelm you with tastefully done awesomeness from Don't want you no more to Whipping Post, but the song that grabbed me was In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. I remember thinking, G D they don't even have to sing. Then they rented a house on the Myakka River in Venice for all night long rehearsals replete with kegs. And play all night they did.
Did you see them at the PLAYGROUND SOUTH in Sarasota?

This is a symphony. It has all the requirements. When I tell people I believe Clapton is a seriously overrated guitar player and they disagree I send them to this track and ask them to show me something similar.
I love classical music (in addition to R&R of course) I have always said, that In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is one of my favorite compositions (as well as my all time #1 favorite songs) It is Indeed a symphony cgirl111! I have always said the same.... We are not wrong!

I mean Clapton is God became a slogan spontaneously... it's over the top, but overrated? Compared to whom? There's Hendrix and then a huge gap and a variety of styles... I'll take SRV after Hendrix, but Clapton has versatility and longevity--- not the greatest but one of the greats still.

Betts got the name of this song from a tombstone in Rose Hill Cemetary in Macon.
But he was thinking of a love interest when he came up with the tune. Butch came up with the drum break and felt he should have been credited for it.

This piece always astounds.. I listen for the structure, and it's there in spades, yet I can't tell where.. I think it is like symphonic music, it seems to follow it's own logic, it is superbly unified... it is seamless! It is wonderful!

This was filmed for a TV concert Sept. 23 1970 (worth noting Jimi Hendrix died 5 days previously). This, Don't keep me Wondering, Dreams, and Whipping Post were played. There's footage of all these are on youtube. Other acts included Sha Na Na (really!), Elvin Bishop, Albert King, The Byrds, and Van Morrison. You can see footage of these guys too. UNFORTUNATELY the soundboard cut out Gregg's mike (recording) until halfway through Dreams and so they cut the Brothers from the broadcast.
Thanks for providing these details about the backstory. I've seen a few other old ABB videos where you can hear everything except for Gregg's voice -- must be from the same concert. And thankfully this song at least couldn't be impacted by problems with the vocal microphone!

I am thankful for all of the input here. I kept wondering why the lead playing and what Duane was doing did not line up. In fact it looked like they kept looping the video of Duane with the same footage. The main reason I thought about this, is because I was curious of when Duane was playing the lead or Dicky was playing?

This is the audio recording but the video is from a different set intermixed with additional video. Do a quick search for this song at Fillmore and you’ll see matched audio and vid. about 8 mins long.
I noticed the video of Dickey playing rhythm while he’s heard playing the volume swells. I’m ok without this. I have seen better film footage from this time period.

That Elizabeth Reed must have been a very special lady to have this masterpiece written in her memory....
Story has it Dicky wrote this for the women he was having an affair who happen to be boz scaggs girlfriend at the time. He took the name eliz Reed of a tomb stone at the Rose Cemetery where he used to go.

The only other band I know except the Dead to have two drummers merging seamlessly into one class act.
Yeah the two drummers always created a slight cacophony on the bottom which was a magical layer of sound for band to play on top of. Never heard anybody do it as well as Allman Brothers.
