Good that you noted the extent of Lawnmarket wasn't dictated by the side streets. This is because, as you suggest, most of the Royal Mile is relatively modern, the result of slum clearances and the addition of new routes in the 1800s (Victoria St., Cockburn St., the Mound, the North Bridge, the Bridges, George IV Bridge etc.). And narrow St. Mary's Wynd was widened to become a street, with Jeffrey Street added to create a continuation with it. Also, a chunk of the Tron Kirk was demolished to make way for the South Bridge...and the area from George IV down to the Tron was burned in a massive fire. There was much change even after the English ceased to burn the town to the ground.
Also worth noting that Canongate, a district that was governed by the canons of Holyrood Abbey, was quite rural compared to Edinburgh.
Tony, you might want to consider a video about the canons - the relationship between the abbey and how it gave rise to the palace. Also, the connection between Canongate and Canonmills. It's a simple connect-the-dots story many will be unaware of. Indeed, the term 'canon' is lost on the many who read it as 'cannon' and thus misconstrue its real meaning.

Tony. The Lawnmarket was originally called the Landmarket which in Scots would be the Laund Mercat. Linen, course cloth, yarn and similar goods were sold here. These were known as inland goods as opposed to imported goods.

Or, perhaps, the fact that it was where lawn (= linen) was bought and sold...

I'm from another city in Scotland, and I will never forget my first sight of the castle from the New Town. It literally took my breath away. The Old Town is full of nooks and crannies. You could spend forever and a day exploring, and still not see all of it. My brother lived on Grassmarket, so I'd go through most weekends to see him. You can just FEEL how old it is. And if you ever see the Heart of Midlothian, you have to spit on it. Can't remember why, but I got told off by a local for not doing it once lol.

I am so glad your little boy is doing ok, you and your wife must have been frantic, real life always comes first. It’s funny when you were showing the ‘streets’ of The Royal Mile, I was trying to get my bearings on where the Ensign Ewart pub was as I like folk music, and straight away you pointed it out, Tony, another wonderful video. Thank you for making these wonderful intuitive videos. I love the way you go into the history of things so everyone can learn the magic of Edinburgh.

“Lawn” is a term for a fine plain weave fabric (originally linen, now more often cotton) like batiste.

Tony - My husband and I just returned from a trip to Edinburgh and we want to THANK YOU so much! We had the confidence to walk around like a "local" and try "short cuts" like Jacob's Ladder and Kings Stable Road as as result of your suggestions. We had a Scottish Breakfast at Scran and a haggis/neeps/tatties lunch at Makar's Mash after watching your videos... and so much more! So grateful for your channel and video insider insight!

Thank you for this very informative video! I watched your channel a lot to prepare for our trip to Scotland & Edinburgh. A year ago today would have been our first full day in Edinburgh, during which we explored the Royal Mile (and I now know, it's five sections!), climbed up Arthur's Seat and toured with the Scotch Whiskey Experience (also the best gift shop I found, with almost all of it's product made in Scotland!). I am now missing Scotland very much, wishing we could go back, and enjoying your content to bring me back to this wonderful place. I am glad to hear your son is better, and wish you a wonderful day!

The Royal Mile was first mentioned in W M Gilbert's book Edinburgh In The Nineteeth Century (1901) where he used the phrase, "From the Castle to the Palace and the Royal Mile in between"..,it gained popularity for being the main route for royalty travelling from the Castle to Holyrood Palace.

Isn’t it a case that the Royal Mile isn’t an Imperial mile long, but slightly longer and described as a Scottish mile.
Good to hear your son is doing better. Especially when you run a channel yourself, time off for family should always be allowed.
By keeping the name consistent across all platforms make it easier to follow. That someone is blatantly stealing your content sounds a mix of laziness and jealousy. It’s also fraud, passing someone else’s work as your own.

    • @alanco608

Hi from Canada, long-time subscriber. Great video; loved seeing the Royal Mile again. But why do you "always" (i think you mentioned/showed it once, years ago) NOT show White Horse Close? Is it because it's residential? We stayed there for a month, and there was lots of curious tourists popping in quite often. Thanks, Tony! Hope your son is doing well.

I will ALWAYS stick with a channel that prioritizes family over everything. If you filmed a video and said you have been busy as your 10 month old (or 5 year old or 15 year old or your wife) was in hospital, I would look twice and wonder what the 7734 you were doing out and about filming a video. You would get the loyalty you gave your family. Not my place, but it would be a knee jerk reaction. I hope everyone is okay now!!!

There's a corner shop at the top of the Canongate, on, err, the corner of Jeffries street and the Mile. For bigger grocery shopping there's a Tesco Express on Holyrood Road, a Sainsburys Local at the top of the Meadows (Middle Meadow Walk) and another in the New town, just off St Andrew's Square.
