    I was one of the great backyard/playground/street receivers in the history of my neighborhood during my teenage years. I have noticed in the last decade or so that receivers use nothing but their hands to catch the ball. I wonder if the ball has become more sticky in the last ten, fifteen or twenty years because it was almost impossible to catch a football that way back in the day. If you tried to catch a strong, head-high pass, the ball could spear right between your hands and you could well get a face full of football. If the ball was thrown lower, chest high for example, you would allow it to hit your body and at the same instant pin it to your chest with your hands. Watch TH-cam videos of Lance Alworth or Charlie Joiner. Watch how the allow the pass to come to their body and then the ball is secured and braced against the body with the hands. Passes just off the body were caught in a "cradle" using the farthest hand away from the passer as the upper hand. This is opposite compared to how I most often see it today.

    • @totustuus7389
      @totustuus7389  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For high school or college receivers, I make them between 54 and 66 inches tall depending on the height of my players. 36 inches wide

    Hey Coach
    My son tends to have early hands and has the hardest time programming himself to catch low balls with pinkies together. Any specific drills? He plays Rb. Heck of runner but catch ability is affecting him in being complete.

    • @totustuus7389
      @totustuus7389  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would emphasize a few things... Strengthen the "eyes to catch" by doing the tennis ball drills from the video but throw most of them low or low and to the side. You can also make it harder by jogging while catching them. Then I would do lots of stationary catches and again throw most of the passes low. Next run back and forth in front of a QB at distances from 5-15 yards catching low throws. Then work into common RB routes--flat routes, angle routes, swing routes, etc., and again emphasize low throws. The size of a player's hands can make it easier or harder to catch the low ball, but strengthening the hands and forearms helps. Pull-ups and normal lifting exercises are good. But the low ball, in my opinion, is mostly about reps, general improvement in catching, and making sure that players keep their eyes on the ball all the way to the catch because the increased natural distance a low ball is from our eyes and the increased need to move our body to catch a low ball makes them more challenging. Hope this is somewhat helpful!

      +Totus Tuus also. He has really good size hands but tend to clap. I will incorporate your drills. This is a nice vid also. One of the best v i have seen

      Thanks much! Glad you liked the video. If your son has big hands then I would say it's mostly a rep thing... and if he tends to clap, working with a QB even on stationary catches or a JUGS machine where he can get 50 reps really fast might help him learn to relax his hands more instead of clapping... soft but strong hands is key.

    do you have any tips on working on the diamond

    • @totustuus7389
      @totustuus7389  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing too special other than getting as many reps as you can and making the diamond muscle memory. But one good drill you can do to work on keeping the football off of your body and also the diamond is to stand behind the goalpost and have someone standing on the goalline throw passes at chest height or above right at the goalpost. Reach each of your arms around the goalpost to catch the ball.
