      @@RonEmch Yeah, I have some of those sets from back in the day where no stats were on the player cards. I kind a have mix feelings about the stats being on them though. I mean it's a nice touch N all to add em, but it kind a takes away a bit of the old school APBA Baseball nostalgia if that makes any sense. And happy holidays to you & yours by the way!

    People need to get their kids into this game. I have so many memories from decades of playing APBA. Biggest were the near dual no-hitters by Bert Blyleven and Clyde Wright, with Wright's getting broken up with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Also, the 3-home run game by Joe Hague (who?) and running out of players in a marathon game with the Indians and Orioles and having to put Merv Rettenmund (an outfielder) behind the plate as a (C-4).

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larry, I agree. Fortunately, I think board games are making a come back. And the reason why is that it's more personable and sociable. So get those kids involved.

    Just picked up the game off market place on FB for $20. Can't wait to play it. I'm 52 and can't believe I've never heard of this before... I would have loved this as a kid. What a shame. Anyways great job on this video.

      Thanks for the kind words. Yes, if you are a baseball fan, you will enjoy it. Something else to consider is that over the last 10 years or more, several one-day regional tournaments have sprung up. If you go to apbagames.com, you will find a listing of upcoming tournaments and results of past tournaments. Signing up for the APBA newsletter is also a great source of information.
      I run a regional tournament in the Toledo, OH, area. Click on this link: th-cam.com/video/oWGJhZ95S8c/w-d-xo.html to see what one of these looks like. You will meet the best people and make new friends.

      +jerry ball Jerry, thanks for the kind words. I've also played Strat when I was younger and most recently in a couple of the strat tournmnets. I love the game, especially the super advanced version face to face. The tournaments are ultra competitive. I just didn't want to devote the time needed to be competitive in those tourneys. APBA Basic is very good solitaire, which is most of my sports gaming. And the 1 day tournaments that have popped up across the midwest are a lot of fun and are a great way to meet some great people with a like interest.

    Okay, I have to say it because it came with the literature in my 1980 APBA baseball game...APBA is pronounced as a word, two syllables. APP-BAH. It is NOT pronounced as speaking the four letters A-P-B-A... Anyway, great video. Forever APBA (APP-BAH).

When I first got the game a buddy of mine and I attempted to play a full season with him playing the American League while I did the National. I would give him the game for a week and every free moment we would play as many games as we could. I vaguely remember that we got through about 30-40 games per team with Baltimore and California as the division leaders in the AL and Montreal and Los Angeles in the NL, IIRC. Wish I still had the stats the we had compiled.

    Great video, I've been a DICE baseball player for several years but wanted a second game to switch back and forth between. I chose APBA baseball and just got my copy of the basic game today, so I'll be trying my first game soon. Just a couple questions for you, one thing I haven't seen is anything about pitcher stamina, is that incorporated in this game at all, or could you run a pitcher out there for like 18 straight innings if you wanted to? Also, where did you get your scoresheets? I'm trying to find the best scoresheet for APBA baseball to record pitcher grades, team fielding ratings, and yours seems to do that. Thanks

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Coach Mike There is not really pitcher stamina. Pitcher grades can increase if they go so many scoreless innings. They can degrade if allowing 5 earned runs in a 3 inning stretch. It's in the rules. Just need to search all the rules. I'll send a pdf of the scoresheet I use.

    Excellent video. I like that you showed EVERYTHING so we could follow along. I own the basic game. My only complaint about this game is lack of left-right factors. I am not sure if that is addressed in the upgraded version or not. My other observation is that the 8 result came up a bunch which caused about 10 pop outs to 3rd base which i dont believe has ever happened in an actual game. Still, seeing this video might make me put this game back into my rotation with Strat and Replay.

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DavidA5205 The 8 and 9 result are very popular. So you are going to get a lot of those results. And yes, the left-right factors are not available in the basic game. I have heard that they are baked into the players card, however. But I'm not positive about that.

      sveatch40 I think they are 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 clear plastic card sleeves. A company like Mayfair or Fantasy Flight will carry them. They have 'penny' sleeves and then heavier ones, about 50 to a pack. I get the heavier ones as they last longer and are more sturdy. Just google 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 card sleeves.

Now, could you tell me if there is such a play in the newer play booklet where a fast runner scores from first on just a single? There is on the old boards but I just can't see a fast runner scoring from first on just a single. I want to just give the runner 2 bases but not three on a single. Could you help me out. I appreciate the help you have given me before.

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian, I did find an instance in the new book. Bases Loaded, Fielding Column 3. On a result of 15, the text says "SINGLE to left; runners advance 2 bases (F on 1st scores). I suppose you could envision a deep hit between the outfielders. Although they can hold the batter to one base, the guy of first is able to scamper home because of his speed. Or maybe the outfielder took too much time getting to the ball, and the runner on 1st took advantage of it. The batter didn't run hard to first because he knew that is was just a single. Maybe if he had hustled, he could have made second base. Rare, yes. Possible, most certainly.

      +David Squires I have never done a full season replay yet, although I am halfway thru a 68 Tigers replay that has been on hold for some time now. I'm keeping full stats (by using BallScore/BallStat), but have never checked fielding stats. Maybe I should. I think folks who play the game a lot do not get caught up with something like you mention. You have a chance to get that with 2 A pitchers. There are things like that about APBA basic that may cause some folks to not like it. But for me, the simplicity and speed of play along with very good realistic results along with almost every season keeps me coming back for more. And a lot of people play APBA,, so the community is big.

    • @WhatIsNumberOne
      @WhatIsNumberOne 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ron Emch Ron, every game seems to have it's quirks. Uneven out distribution is pretty low on my list of priorities, but it is a weakness of APBA in my opinion (albeit a very minor one). I haven't played APBA in many, many years. I had Baseball for Windows when it first came out and I had a good time with it. I've given NPNG a whirl recently (which is obviously based on the same engine as APBA and my biggest peeve is the stealing system. I was replaying a Cardinals/Reds game and had Lou Brock single down two with two outs in the ninth and promptly get thrown out stealing. No way one of the all time great base stealers ever tries to run in that situation.
      I'd love to see how APBA with the masters rules. Seems like the pitching stats might come out a bit better, but this is coming from a guy that's only played around a bit with APBA.

      +David Squires What was the score? Looked it up and it had to be a rare play number, right? I also would guess that Brock did steal in this situation at least once in his career. Wonder if there is a way to research this, although if it is a rare play number, it would not matter who is on first with the game. But that's why I like it also, since I'm playing solo, very few managerial decisions I need to make., so the game engine has to handle some of them. Would you have been okay if it was a pickoff? Bottom line, it may not appear to be realistic to you, but an out is an out. For a rare play number, make up something in your head that would make it realistic for you.

    You did a good job but you are playing a 1970s team with newer results boards (there were no R or ZZ on the 70s player cards)

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +loudmusic67 Ok. I don't think that affects any of the results, does it?

    • @loudmusic67
      @loudmusic67 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it does not. I was just pointing it out because you were explaining an R rating on a pitchers card, when there were none in the 70s. (Hey, you did a great job!)

    You screwed up the whole bottom of 5th...and how could you not catch it? Reggie made last out in 4th. But you didnt flip is card and you looked at reggies card to lead off 5th. The whole inning was wrong

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How could I not catch it? Easy. When you video something like this with a cell phone, it's easy to do something wrong and not catch it. Or it's easy to forget about something. So yes, I screwed up. But you know what, the earth is still here and people are still living. Would love to meet you face to face, you sound like a very interesting person.

    None of your pitchers will have an "R". You have old cards with new boards

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And your point is?

    • @alanrosewicz6479
      @alanrosewicz6479 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Emch Just impacts the game. Your pitching will not come out true. On the old boards both pitchers would have had more strikeouts. With bases empty and "A" grade and batter result would be "9"...that would be a strikeout.

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan Rosewicz yep. Only for A pitchers. And an out is an out. So did all A pitchers always strike
      Out more batters?

    • @alanrosewicz6479
      @alanrosewicz6479 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Emch. Yes Ron the "A " pitchers did strikeout more batters. I love playing the game and of course liked your idea( or i wouldn't have watched lol). Maybe i just like the details( or accuracy too much) especially your unfortunate mistake. You had a perfect game lol lol!!! I know at least first 2 batters would have been out. Perfect game on video would have been awesome

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, it would have been awesome. I hardly consider it unfortunate, though. I like accuracy also, but like I said, it's easy to make mistakes when your holding the phone in one hand, doing all the talking, and then playing the game with the other hand.

    No "zz" in 1972. You should have used old boards or newer cards to equal newer boards

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most everyone that I know uses the new boards today. All the regional tournaments and the national convention use the new books. Very little impact on the game. Certainly, not enough to worry about. But the great thing is, it's your game, play it any way you like.

    thought they quit making the basic game

    • @RonEmch
      @RonEmch  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      monk302 No, not at all. With the card sets being produced now, they put the stats required for the master game on the card also. So one card set is good for both the basic and master game. The basic game is very much still alive and kicking. I think it's a good idea. If I ever decide to make the jump and try the master game, I would already have the needed cards/information to play it.

      Ron Emch I always played the basic version as I saw very little wrong with it. And prior to APBA adding all this master symbols stuff to it, it would be safe to say allot of others felt the same way. I saw what the master symbols looked like, & to me they don't make much sense. It seems it would make the game last longer & take longer to play. Guess that's why I love the basic version the most, cos you can really fly when it comes to game time. I use the 50th Anniversary playbook for all my replays. Maybe someday I'll decide to try the master symbols version but I doubt it, cos I'm satisfied with the basic version. I find that the stats more less balance out over the course of a full season & the best part of all is, the game moves fast & then you can move on to another game with two new teams if you want. I also have the new playbook & I did have the old APBA boards but I gave those to my nephew & his girlfriend & now their hooked on the basic game version. lol But regardless to what season set you buy (unless APBA says otherwise) all the sets will work with both, the basic & master version games. But myself, I think I'll stay with the basic version, cos its pretty accurate.
