It does sound like a Crusaders tune (from when Carlton was the “unofficial” 5th member of the band in the early to mid-‘70s). The trombone & tenor sax horn section is just like during the Crusaders ‘70s era (when founding members Wilton Felder was on sax & Wayne Henderson on trombone).
Recorded on my Iphone 14 about 25 feet from the stage and that was the opening tune so maybe took the sound guy a few minutes to get it all dialed in - or my shitty phone recording too hahaha
I've only seen Mr. 335 once, on the bill along with The Yellowjackets, Spyro Gyra & Miles Davis. If crowd response is a good indicator, Larry stole the show that night.
I attended two Crusaders Concerts in the seventies in Chicago and I thought Larry Carltons performance was grand. Having heard what I did then, compared to now (this video),I have to admit,I am disappointed .Just sayin.Doesnt take away from this performance but what can you say when you know a person has played better because you were there at the time and heard it.
@@donaldkain5132 I read something about Larry being shot in the throat years ago outside his RM 335 studio that laid him up for awhile and suffered some nerve damage. We all have okay and great nights if ur Larry Carlton- my first time seeing him and loved it
So sorry to read this. Give the guy a break. It's great that he's playing for you to enjoy. Perhaps when you were young your ears were more receptive to his music. Now that you have aged you are no longer able to hear the music honestly...just saying!
Today Larry is not those days Larry but it's the same for all of us. The beauty of Larry was and is the natural way of his playing. Yesterday he was a young horse at the peak of his playing as it is right it was and now is around 80 years, he probably suffered some desease and probably he still plays just for fun in remembering those days. I don't believe that everyday he still does exercise for having the best hand possible. But the roots of his melody and way of playing are still in him.
@condocord7544 That might be a tad harsh. I wasn’t excited about the T-wah effect, but the solo section of this old Crusader’s tune is comprised of just three chords…not a lot of harmonic leeway.
Is it not apparent to you the man is ill!! He is suffering some type of palsy where his hands shake - he has more melody is one note than one billion shredders! The man is a legend. Long Live Larry Carlton!
@ This is the only video that I have seen where Larry appears to be struggling physically. I hope that whatever it is, it’s transient. Age catches up with all of us eventually.
Classic Crusaders song form "Those Southern Nights" LP. Saw them perform it with Larry in 1973

Larry Carlton was an OFFICIAL member of the Crusaders for a while.
It’s on the Crusaders album Those Southern Knights, so yeah…
This is amazing and thanks for posting BUT... anyone else get surprised by the bass at the beginning? My studio monitors were screaming OUCH!

I’d have to agree that the Crusaders are in a different league to Larry’s band here.

Good to see Larry practice that one scale. Time to retire.
go home, you dirty hobo
