I am an advanced player and instructor. This is the best, clearest, and most concise instruction I have seen on the internet. No excessive chatter or guitar wakery. Just pure music instruction. Bravo!
Guitar wankery, well said. I hate when you get ten minutes of shitty pentatonic minor shredding in every video. Firstly it sounds like shit and secondly we know what improvising is, we want to learn to do it not watch some unwashed reject metallica dickhead do it terribly.
Mate... Concerning this topic, there are alot of lesson videos on TH-cam taught by some seriously respected guitarists, but I can honestly say that after watching this video, yours is the best I've studied thus far. The way you break it down and explain everything just really worked for me. I just had that "Aha! I finally get it!" moment. It's a pivotal moment in my playing. It's all finally "clicked" for me. I've gone from meandering the fretboard and playing by ear- with no clue which scale I was playing or even the key of the song I was soloing to- to assembling all the pieces of the puzzle. Namely, know all of your chords first, including bar chords, open chords, and power chords. Second, learn the major and minor pentatonic scales for each note- and learn their positions on the fretboard. Third, develop a rudimentary knowledge of arpeggios. Fourth- and this is where this outstanding lesson comes in- learn the NOTES that make up each individual chord being played in the background. The root, the 3rd, the 5th, the 7th, etc. You can then put it all together with attention to phrasing and ACCENTING the rhythm in the background. Point/counterpoint. You can then learn how to polish up your playing through technical skills like vibrato, bending vibrato, bending, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, etc. All of a sudden, that intimidating fretboard with all those notes becomes amazingly tamed. Years ago, I could competently play by ear- but I had no confidence as I lacked the essential knowledge- and knowledge is POWER. So, THANK YOU for this great lesson!
Mr. Fretjam! You're the man. This is crystal clear music explanation. Therefore these are the best videos on the internet. You never know out there. This channel is exceptional, you are exceptional. Thank you
I just saw this lesson and I have to say; this is by FAR the absolute best lesson to advance me to soloing. It clearly lays out how to link things together. I’ve seriously been confounded about the subject. I’ve played rhythm for years using these, and other, bar chords readily, but have wanted to solo. I’ve even taken lessons for a few months and have gotten nowhere; except realizing I’ve been wasting money. Most teachers drag things out to maximize their earnings. IMHO. Thank you!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the share. I'm probably creating these videos the "slow way" as my production skills are limited! But I hope I get the point across. Sometimes I watch these back and wonder if I crammed too much into one lesson... your feedback means a lot to me.
I have been struggling with this topic for months and could not find a good explanation from teachers or videos. With this explanation this ticked in a few minutes, thank you so much !
I've been looking for this for a very long time. I've watched so many lessons and these 12:31 was everything I needed. I can sleep peacefully now. Thanks, seriously.
I've been playing for 3 years and am now working on breaking into improvisation. I know the scales front to back and can move fluidly around the neck, but now it's all about making logical sense of what's happening. Thanks for the video, it's really insightful and concise.
I'm currently internalising the scale shape, switching strings in between notes, and then looking to move on to improvisation. Did you make it? Totally could do with some motivation here.
I've been playing songs for years and have studied theory as well which was at times challenging to link together with actual playing. FRETJAM has provided me with a much clearer understanding and greatly helped accelerate my understanding of the " WHY" certain note and chord progressions fit as well as they do. I've gone from not only to speaking the language, but also understanding the words and grammar of music to expand my abilities. GREAT JOB!!!
I couldn't begin to tell you how many hours I've spent over the years trying to get some kind of clear instruction as to how to figure out how to do this. This is far away, hands down, absolutely the best, clearest instruction and explanation of this that I have ever heard! I can't tell you how much I appreciate you doing this!
I have been playing since 1983.... the clearest lesson on this topic that I have seen so far. I hereby award you the “Best Teacher on Planet Earth” award.
I've come back to your incredibly good tutorials after a period of playing bass guitar in a band. You have to be the most effective teacher on TH-cam, no question.
GAME CHAGER,!!!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant for me it is one of those doors that open and completely change the way you look at things, and I’ve been playing a long time and know my theory really well, Thank you so much very exciting, always excellent information but this has left me speechless and so excited.
The only one lesson I found for finding the RIGHT notes in a guitar solo!!!! I always played some parts of the RIGHT scale over a chord progression but sound wrong. Just because I didn't knew how to chose my solo notes properly ... thanks a lot!!!
Thanks! I see/hear chord tones as the "safest" target notes. They are a logical first step in creating meaningful soloing phrases. However, I'm in the process of making a video that will explore color tones not voiced in the chord and how they can offer different emotions.
Fretjam, Here is some feed back . I play piano accordion and have some limit understanding of theory, intevals, scales ... and I am trying to learn guitar - I play just a few basic chord patterns. I can say that for me your pace and the content is perfect ... you have the ability to describe theory in a way that makes sense ... listening to your videos makes things fall into place. Do not change your style or pace. Much appreciate what you are doing.
I, like son many unfortunatly , am not educated enough on the theory of music and this is the best and most comprehensive explaination/simplification of basic fretboard theory I came across, great job and thank you !
Absolutely awesome. Instant fan. As many other commentators I have tried to get this for a long time. Watching from 3.38 things finally fell into place. Massive thanks
Quite simply the Best guitar teaching site I have seen on YTube to date...it's clear, concise and integrates music theory and with fretboard demonstrations in a format understandable to beginners and experts alike...Fretboard, you are an amazing teacher...keep posting.....best regards...and many thanks for your efforts..
Guy, I've been watching you, ahead now, so you're really the best moderate in this area, thanks so much, for you have been sharing your way to teach it.
Wow! This is an awesome AHA moment lesson. As a visual learner, I found the superimposed intervals to be a brilliant enlightenment to each strategy. In pursuit of adding more melodic phrasing to my soloing, I mostly chased triads and larger chord shapes maybe not fully understanding intervals. It also helps me find more dissonant double stops on the fretboard where a single note bent into harmony is another cool trick. Thank you so much!
Fretjam videos are superb. I learnt the 7 major positions from your lessons and now this explanation of chord tone targeting is the one that gets through to me (after watching tons of videos). Thank you!
I have to admit, I have been watching online guitar lessons for years and have found great lessons, but the simplicity of your lessons combined with great examples and visual references have my addicted to your lessons! Please please please keep posting!
I can’t express just how much I get out of your quick and very easy to follow lessons. In just minutes I find my playing and soloing much more colorful and advanced sounding than from any other YT channel. Please keep up the great work.
Your vid put it all together for me. I know my scales very well, so I totally get it now. I tried it already, recorded it, than played it back and it sounded great Thanks, very much.
There are some very good teachers on the net, but your presentations and content are simply wonderful. Thanks. I believe I set up a small monthly payment some time ago quite voluntarily. Thanks for the excellent help.
this channel is gold, i'm trying to learn piano and guitar together and i go back and forth from one to the other, and these video are super helpful, thanks :)
Thank you for this informative lesson. I especially like the final point about not being afraid to use trial and error because, I use trial and error a lot in my playing and writing of riffs and solos :) This is helpful to all of us players.
Stumbled onto your site by accident. This is the information I am looking for. Your explanation of guitar theory and the graphics used really help me to better understand the fret board and how to navigate it. Thank you for putting this material out there.
Cheers, that was a great lesson. Actually presenting in pure graphics rather than with a guitar helps to explain things clearly, especially the overlaying of scales, arpeggios and chords. Thanks for spending the time (I'm sure it took ages) putting this together, it's really helped to bring together so much of what I've been looking at recently.
You have such amazing lessons.Very clear and at a good pace. You must spend a lot of time creating each one. I really appreciate that. Your channel is making learning guitar a bit less daunting. I will share your channel with others. Thanks so much.
very nicely presented, I had some difficulty comprehending at first, but by watching a few times over, I then broke it down to the smallest pieces I could, finally then understand it & use most of the suggestions based on my personal playing style.
I always recommend starting with intervals - the building blocks of scales and chords. See the fretboard section on my site, I go quite in depth with this. Once you understand intervals, the connection between chords and scales will already have been made. So you can then focus on the application of these two elements, including soloing over chord progressions.
Loving this explanation. I have been looking for it for a long time. thank you. and it has led me to you website which is comprehensive. Again thank you for all this.

what tuning used on this lessen ?

I am just starting to get a rudimentary knowledge of arpeggios. this Lesson helped a great deal. Very clear , thank you.
this is the channel i've been looking for! finally someone teaching how to fish instead of giving out a specific sequence of fish!
you nailed it. help a man catch a fish and he eats for the day. teach the man to fish himself and he eats the rest of his life
steven
Yep, like they say...
Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day
Give him a rod and he’ll sell it on eBay.
Be the fish
For sure

This is so effective because its just not the theory but the actual sounds. Its very reinforcing.

I'm a picture thinker and the way this was presented is seriously perfect for me. What a well made video. Great job.
The best way I can put it is that I have been digging for years, and I hit gold today.
Why does one 10 minute video by fret jam teach me more than videos of other online instructors in the past 5 years?
I don't know, did they understand theory? Understanding some basic music theory makes understanding these types of lessons easier.
I really appreciate what the other instructors do online but this is the best
Thanks

12 minute lesson, took me 2 years to master this and become second nature while improvising. Totally, worth the effort. Cheers!
