    Enjoy following your channel. Been following your family’s channel for years (we’re RVers, too). My son (22 yo) and I will be traveling to Japan for the first time in April, 2024. He will graduate from college in December and the trip is his graduation present. Keep the vids coming. We love seeing what you’re up to.

    This was great Elijah, love learning from you as you explore this new part of your life :) would love to hear more about meeting people in Japan as a foreigner, what's been good and what has been difficult. I imagine meeting people and having friends makes everything else a little easier

    Back in 2004, my oldest daughter and I stayed in house very similar to the one you are living in during our two week trip to Japan. The kitchen was bigger, but the bathing and toilet facilities were older. One of my friends that we were visiting got a kick out of the fact that we had to turn a crank to start the pilot light for the shower's water heater. It wasn't luxury lodging, but it served our needs as a home base while we traveled around visiting internet friends and attending concerts... and even in 2004, $200 for two weeks of lodging was a bargain. We were the only short-term renters there. Everyone else was a mixture of college students and musicians - some foreigners like us, most native Japanese. We really enjoyed the experience.

      Generally, no. And i would say majority wears shoes indoors. Pretty standard. I lived in S Korea ayears ago and adopted the traditional way of taking shoes off because more sanitary in my opinion.

    It's cleaner to take off your shoes when entering a house. The soles of your shoes
    have picked up germs from the street, best to remove them.

    Did I understand that tiny place is to accommodate you and 5 other strangers who are your roommates? How does it get cleaned? Sharing shower and toilet area with strangers as well. And no sink to wash immediately after toileting. Sorry after Covid and being a health care professional it has put me in a different mindset now.

    • @wvover8079
      @wvover8079 ปีที่แล้ว

      sink is built into the top of the toilet.... and who knows, may be less chance of getting germs and infections than most hospitals in the states... Ive seen healthcare workers who never wash hands or use sanitizer when entering patient rooms.

    I don't think you and Japan are a good match for the moment. I can tell from the genkan experience. Either you appreciate why people do it, or you don't; and that's down to deep psychological leaning. Also, you like space. And looking at your tiny room, and the shared common area, I think you are going to have a depressing time in Japan. xD Sorry, I don't mean to jinx you. But I would never pick a place like that, knowing my personality is similar to yours, preferring space, orderliness, and privacy. I think Japan is not all like this apartment., but living like this will probably make you think this feels like Japan. There is another more comfortable side to Japan. I don't know your financial situation; perhaps you could only afford this for the moment, and that's alright.
    But in short, I think maybe one day you will tire of the pressure in the West and have the chance to look back upon Japan and find it more comforting to your soul. But that one day is probably not today and will likely be many years down the line.
