I think you've got the right idea here, but I do also think it's included in the spirit of the project and suggested name! Here's how I parsed it out and connected the two, maybe you'll see it similarly! I kind of like that the first boat they used to tip the scales back the other way, the first domino to fall if you will, resulted in the domino fish being the first resident and as a result the potential name of the first ship on the front lines of the project. When the metal rusts and the epoxy and solder break down, how will that affect the coral living on the structures? Was that a constraint in choosing materials? The biochemistry behind this is fascinating 🙂
I think they're steel, not pure iron. An online blurb on coral spider structures is that they are rust-treated steel, covered with resin (they mentioned epoxy in the video). Rusting iron, like from sunken ships, can be dangerous, as it can fuel a phase shift, the growth of sea anenome called Corallimorph, that outbreed and eat coral. This is called a Black Reef. Steel does not raise issues, as long as toxic paints are removed from the ships, like when decommissioned ships are deliberately sunk to create artificial reef structures.

Glad to see you guys buy a boat to facilitate coral. Definitely do a localized version of this whole project for Indonesia. Labor like that isn't affordable in the US, but for a US/Canada Mossy Earth, I think groups of paid staff working with volunteers can do a lot. Get local school kids on field trips into nature. Why do I always cry when I watch your content,....thank you!
I love diving and have seen beautifull reefs and reefs reduced to rubble ( i was actually diving when someon closeby was fishing with dynamite). Glad you are doing this project and, as a member, I can be a small part in it
Thank you for the support! - Cheers, Duarte
out of curiosity, where did you witness this?
@@MossyEarth I need to check my logbooks but I think it was in Indonesia, near sulawesi/manado . Scary and very loud and illegal
Makes sense. It is a reducing problem but not one that is gone.
@@MossyEarth it was 10-20 years ago, but it really made an impression. And 1 brave dartfish left in an underwater dessert.
I've been a subscriber/member for a bit more than a year now. It's amazing how much Mossy Earth gets done.
