    🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
    ===============================
    Underwater forests are an immensely important ecosystem: they support biodiversity, improve water quality and sequester carbon. Despite their significance for marine life and the fight against climate change, the loss of kelp forests from coastlines worldwide has captured much less of the spotlight on deforestation. This is why since 2020, we have been working with SeaForester to restore kelp forests in Portugal where large areas of kelp have disappeared. We are building a kelp nursery to produce and deploy kelp that tests a new method called ‘green gravel’ with the potential for large-scale marine reforestation.

      Can you make a planting coral video? People are trying to remake coral reefs in Seychelles, Hawaii, and many more! Coral reefs are very important and are being killed by climate change and humans indirectly affecting the reefs.

      Do the kelp have to hit a minimum size before they start reproducing or will the tiny ones start releasing spores their 1st spring?
      Regardless, I think the "green gravel" method would maximize the returns if you artificially raised the kelp to a point where they are mature enough that you can drop them just before their 1st spawn. That way even if most of the dropped kelp doesn't thrive for whatever reason, they'll at least have a chance to dump their spores within a month or two of being dropped. That way it's like a "double drop"! Drop 1 with the "green gravel" and drop 2 of spores from the kelp! You also get an 'added benefit' since each kelp drops _multiple_ spores. This means you could possible end up with 3x the amount of kelp you dropped or more‼️ 🤝💯

      there should be a free to access catalogue of all techniques and their success rates for everything that anyone can submit to a review, similar to wikipedia. for example searching for this could be: artificial + kelp + reproduction + natural habitat = spore bag technique [low % success rate] vs + simulated habitat = green gravel technique [high % success rate]. also dealing with the stigma of publishing 'failure' in academia is a thing

    I do work professionally on conservation (On south america) and can tell right away that you are working with a higher than most standard of results reporting, budget transparency and overall project quality. About the importance of sharing failed attepms, is sometimes dismaying seeing how far organizations go to forget their mistakes, so they and other organizations keep making the same mistakes year after year. Definitevely an organization worth contributing to

    In Japan, "KONBU" has been part of the cuisine for thousands of years. We consume lots of it so we grow them. But it's usually hung vertically in the ocean.

    Love the content you guys make, I watch every single video. Hope you can eventually expand to other places and other continents. I live in Brazil and would love to see a project in my country! Of course there is the Amazon Rainforest and it is very important that we preserve it, but there are other incredible biomes and enviroments here. Have you ever heard about the Araucaria tree (Araucaria angustifolia) and the Araucaria Forests? They are critically endangered and near extinction! It would be awesome to see you guys do a project about it. It's probably not possible now, since it's in another continent, but keep it in mind for when you get bigger, ok? Love from Brazil.

    I used to go snorkelling every year off the coast of Catalina and enjoy the incredible life in the kelp forests there. Then one year I went and after high sea temperatures, the entire thing was dead. Everything was white and flat and quiet and empty. It really broke my heart to see fish and seals and turtles and octopi lobster and eels and sea lions and so many amazing creatures gone like they'd never been there. It made me sadder that so many people would see it and not even know what they were missing. Videos like this give me hope that it's not all just a downhill slide into the abyss, and that even as things get bad, there are people in the world working to not only stop it, but reverse it. Thanks for the work you do.

  • @jd3d_cgi
    @jd3d_cgi 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Glorious!
    You mentioned at the end the kelp was being eaten - the baby kelp is vulnerable. I have seen a project fail in Berlin where they were re-planting reeds and grasses in large ponds, and it was impossible to protect them from being eaten. Even metal cages couldn't keep out the ducks and swans.
    Have you thought about large cages or areas with chicken wire to protect the kelp grow into maturity?

    Seeing a few bites (but not too many) taken out is actually somewhat heartening. It means this kelp is a food source! This suggests a slightly higher planting concentration, so local fish damage doesn't overwhelm the plantings.

    If we care about the survival and prosperity of our loved ones in a thriving world, these things should be a fundamental pillar of our societies. In the same way that we respect and take for granted institutions like education, medical, law enforcement and courts, I hope to see the day that stewardship of the environment takes equal economic and social prominence. Your work is wonderful and inspiring.

    This is why I’m a member to this charity over others, so many nature charities focus on conservation (which is incredibly important) but always feels sort of futile, like you’re only holding back the inevitable, meanwhile this is exciting! If you can buy a small town or naberhood and line the sides of roads with native flowers bushes succulents trees and mybe evon increase the amount of soil they have.
    Also mybe fill the yards with native edible plants of any kind from barriers fruits and vegetables oh and plant it all from seed to see the effects.
    Why well to see how it effects how much water is uses how fast they grow and see how much it reduces heat and energy demand on the grid.

    im thrilled to see the encouraging results in this update! it was mentioned in the first segment that focusing on the perennial would help for monitoring the trial of the gravel method at greater scale. i would be interested in seeing the health of a patch of both perennial and annual varieties together compared with a patch with only perennials. obviously this is outside of the intended scope of this trial but i would imagine that the quick growing annuals would give cover and time to the slower progressing perennials to establish themselves.
    keep up the great work and thanks for this update
